Diversification gains: On India and its export competitiveness
India needs to improve export competitiveness (प्रतिस्पर्धात्मकता) in terms of (के संदर्भ में, के मामले में) cost and quality
India’s export performance in April 2026 has been commendable (प्रशंसनीय, सराहनीय), underscoring (रेखांकित करना, जोर देना) the attempts by the government and industry to diversify (विविध बनाना, विस्तार करना) in times of crisis. Despite the various trade disruptions (व्यापार में बाधा, व्यापारिक व्यवधान), merchandise (माल, वस्तुएँ) exports grew nearly (लगभग, करीब-करीब) 14% in April 2026 to $43.6 billion. Some of this, as even (used to emphasize a fact that is acknowledged even by someone who might be expected to deny it; just as, surprisingly also, exactly as, similarly) the Commerce Secretary has acknowledged (स्वीकार करना, मान्यता देना), is due to (के कारण, की वजह से) the overall rise in prices. Another significant factor has been the increase in the number of markets served by Indian exporters. According to government data, at least 20 exporting sectors have added 17 or more new destinations (places to which someone or something is going or being sent; target market, end point, drop-off) in the last year. For example, handloom (a manually operated machine for weaving cloth; artisanal fabric, hand-woven textile, hand-spun material, manual loom) products are now exported to 29 more countries than in 2024-25. The additional exports thus (इस प्रकार, इसलिए) generated are still small, but establishing (स्थापित करना) these pathways is vital progress. The data also show that several of India’s key (प्रमुख, महत्वपूर्ण) export sectors — engineering goods, petroleum products, electronic goods, drugs (medicines; medications, pharmaceuticals, prescriptions, remedies) and pharmaceuticals, and organic (relating to chemical compounds containing carbon; natural chemical substances, carbon-based chemicals, non-synthetic matter, biological compounds) and inorganic chemicals (chemical compounds that lack carbon-hydrogen bonds; non-carbon chemicals, mineral compounds, synthetic chemicals) — exported more in April 2026 than in the same month last year. This suggests (indicate; points to, imply, show, signify) resilience (the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; strength, toughness, adaptability, robustness) in these supply chains (a network between a company and its suppliers to produce and distribute a specific product; distribution networks, logistics networks, supply networks, value chains), and the establishment (creation or formation; setting up, foundation, inception, institution) of new ones. Another test of the strength (an event or situation that demonstrates the robustness or resilience of something; endurance test, challenge, trial, assessment) of India’s export growth is to remove the effect of petroleum products and their inflated (increased unreasonably or artificially; exaggerated, boosted, blown up, swollen) prices from the mix (combination; blend, assortment, variety, fusion). Here, too, India has performed reasonably (fairly; quite, moderately, adequately, satisfactorily) well. India’s non-oil exports grew 9% in April 2026 to about $40 billion. Notably (especially; particularly, significantly, remarkably, outstandingly), India’s merchandise export growth also outpaced (surpass; exceed, outstrip, outdo, outperform) the growth of its imports at 9.9%.
That said (even so; despite what has just been said, nevertheless, however, nonetheless), the impact of the West Asia crisis is clear. Exports to West Asia fell by 28% in April, following up on an even larger contraction (decline; decrease, reduction, shrinking, shrinking phase) in March. Imports from the region, too, fell about 32%. This is a vital trade link (commercial connection or route between two countries or regions; trade channel, economic tie, commercial relation, trade corridor) for India and gains in other regions are not yet enough (insufficient at present; inadequate, lacking, short of the mark, incomplete) to outweigh (be heavier, greater, or more significant than; supersede, offset, outbalance, override) the losses here. Imports of the safe-haven (a secure investment or asset in times of crisis; refuge, shelter, sanctuary, secure asset) asset gold jumped 82% in April, which is perhaps (maybe; possibly, conceivably, potentially, feasibly) what prompted (cause; lead to, give rise to, trigger) the Prime Minister to urge (advise earnestly; encourage, push, entreat, persuade) Indians to stop buying gold, and the government to hike the import duty (a tax collected on imports by the customs authorities; tariff, customs tax, levy, toll). Another highlight (the best or most significant part; focal point, feature, main point, core aspect) of the data is the continued (ongoing; sustained, uninterrupted, persistent, steady) rise in the significance (importance; consequence, meaning, relevance, weight) of the services sector. The share of services in total exports has risen to about 49% compared to 39% in 2014. Rather than (instead of; as opposed to, unlike, in place of) a reason for complacency (self-satisfaction; smugness, carelessness, laziness, overconfidence), this should make the government take note (pay attention; observe, heed, be aware, bear in mind). Any loss of a competitive edge (an advantage over competitors gained by offering consumers greater value; competitive advantage, superiority, dominance, lead) in IT services, especially, due to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems; machine intelligence, automated reasoning, artificial intellect, computational intelligence), will be an increasingly (more and more; progressively, to an increasing extent, continuously, steadily) costly (expensive; high-priced, dear, pricey, exorbitant) loss to India. Overall (altogether; generally, in general, on the whole, largely), however (nevertheless; yet, nonetheless, on the other hand, still), the government’s push for (demand; call for, campaign for, insist on, advocate for) diversification of export destinations — including through concerted (involving a lot of people coming together and doing something with great effort; coordinated, joint, combined, collective) activity to seal (conclude; finalize, secure, clinch, settle) various trade deals — seems (appear; look, give the impression of, feel like) to be bearing fruit. Now, if only it could also improve export competitiveness in terms of cost, scale (size; extent, magnitude, proportion, scope), and quality, India would really become a global contender (a competitor or participant capable of competing at an international level; international player, worldwide competitor, global challenger).
