Testing troubles: On the National Testing Agency, NEET-UG 2026

Leaks and breaches have destroyed the National Testing (परीक्षण, जाँच, मूल्यांकन) Agency’s credibility (विश्वसनीयता, भरोसेमंदी)

Once bitten, twice shy: this saying (कहावत, लोकोक्ति) surely does not apply to the National Testing Agency (NTA) (राष्ट्रीय परीक्षण एजेंसी). Given (ध्यान में रखते हुए) the number of times that the Agency (organization, institution, administrative body, statutory body) has run into (सामना करना, झेलना) trouble in the conduct (संचालन, प्रबंधन) of common entrance exams (सामान्य प्रवेश परीक्षा), it would have been logical (तार्किक, उचित) to expect those at the helm (नेतृत्व में, नियंत्रण में) to have learnt their lessons. However (हालांकि, फिर भी), this week’s cancellation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG affecting (प्रभावित करना) over 22 lakh students is a serious blow (झटका, आघात) to the agency’s reputation (प्रतिष्ठा, साख). The NTA, on May 12, 2026, announced the cancellation of the exam held on May 3, amid (के बीच, के दौरान) allegations of paper leak (the unauthorized disclosure of confidential information; breach, disclosure, revelation, exposure), as the government tasked the CBI with carrying out a comprehensive (thorough, exhaustive, all-inclusive, complete) inquiry ((official) investigation, probe, examination, scrutiny). The decision followed investigations revealing (disclose, uncover, bring to light, make known) that a ‘guess paper’ (a collection of predicted, high-importance questions created to help students prepare; a set of expected or predicted exam questions; predictive test paper, model paper, practice questions, sample paper) — a collection of predicted, high-importance questions created to help students prepare — matched (correspond with, agree with, tally with, align with) numerous (many, countless, scores of, multiple) questions in chemistry and biology. Media reports said that this material (documents, information, papers) had reached coaching hubs (center, core, focal point, epicenter) in Rajasthan nearly (almost, practically, just about, closely) a month ahead, and had been sold to aspirants (candidate, applicant, hopeful, contender) for huge sums (a large amount of money; hefty amount, massive amount). This led to investigations by the Rajasthan Police Special Operations Group (a specialized investigative agency of the Rajasthan Police tasked with handling complex, high-profile cases, organized crime, and state-wide fraudulent networks) and 15 people were arrested. In the face of (despite, notwithstanding, regardless of, when confronted with) such obvious (clear, evident, apparent, blatant) fraud (cheating, swindling, deceit, deception), the NTA maintained the line that the decision to cancel the exam was taken “in the interest of (for the benefit of, for the sake of, to the advantage of, considering) students and in recognition of (in appreciation of, as acknowledgment of, out of respect for, honoring) the trust on which (used to indicate the basis or foundation of something; upon which, based on, supported by) the national examination system rests (depend, rely, be based, hinge)”. The question though, is: does the NTA still enjoy (possess, benefit from, experience, have the use of) that trust? NEET has been dogged by controversy right from the start (from the very beginning, initially, since inception, originally), with several States opposing the format. But even after (despite, in spite of, regardless of, notwithstanding) it was rolled out (launch, introduce, organize, inaugurate (something officially)) across the country, the NTA, as the agency conducting the exam, has suffered several dents (damage, impair, diminish, undermine) to its credibility, with various charges (accusation, allegation, indictment, claim) and controversies coming up with depressing (disheartening, discouraging, gloomy, dismaying) regularity (uniformity, consistency, routine nature, steadiness). This includes the 2019 impersonation scam (a fraudulent scheme where someone pretends to be another person, typically to take an exam on their behalf; proxy exam fraud, identity fraud scheme, cheating racket, substitution fraud) in Tamil Nadu where students used proxies to write the exam; the 2022 controversy of frisking (search, check, inspect, examine) girl examinees (candidate, test-taker, student, applicant) in Kerala, and the 2024 paper leak and grace marks (extra marks awarded to candidates to compensate for exam irregularities or tough questions; compensatory marks, bonus marks, additional credit, concessionary marks) controversy.

The K. Radhakrishnan committee (a high-level expert committee constituted by the Ministry of Education, headed by former ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan, to recommend reforms in the examination process, improve data security, and review the functioning of the National Testing Agency), which was constituted (form, establish, set up, create) to recommend reforms in the examination process, recommended a restructuring (reorganization, reformation, overhaul, modification) of the NTA, and creating strong institutional linkages (the connections or relationships between different organizations or bodies; structural tie-ups, institutional connections) with State and district authorities (officials, administrators, officialdom, the bureaucracy, decision-makers) in order to (with the purpose of, with the aim of, so as to, intended to) produce a secure test administration apparatus (the structure, system, or organization responsible for managing and executing duties; administrative machinery, bureaucratic system, management structure). Among others (indicating that there are more things/people to mention; including, alongside other things, along with others, notably), it also made recommendations for multi-stage testing (an evaluation process conducted in multiple sequential phases or levels; tiered examination, multi-phase assessment, sequential screening), hybrid (composed of mixed elements or combining different systems; mixed, composite, combined, blended) use of papers and computers, and a series of measures (step, action, procedure, course of action) to prevent breaches and malpractices (wrongdoing, professional misconduct, unethical behavior, irregularity). It would be a crime to allow the NTA to continue with its inept (incompetent, unskillful, clumsy, inefficient) conduct of common entrance exams, impacting the future of several lakhs of students. NEET was introduced as a measure to bring into play (utilize, employ, apply, make use of) a single, standardised (made consistent, uniform, systematized, regulated), and transparent (clear, open, straightforward, honest) entrance exam for medical admissions. But the transparency (clarity, openness, straightforwardness, accountability) that it has so far (until now, up to this point, thus far, to date) shown is of (involve, entail, comprise, possess) an entirely different kind: leaks and breaches of confidentiality (secrecy, privacy, discretion, non-disclosure).
