Ans. The cartoon depicts world political drama where China makes overtures to the USA. It reveals that the US aimed into a secret understanding with China keeping the USSR in the dark.

3. What did the USA do to improve its relations with China ?

Ans. President Richard M. Nixon arrived in China for an official trip. He was the first US President to visit the People’s Republic of China since it was established in 1949. This was an important event because the USA was seeking to improve its relations with the Communist country during the Cold War.

“Some people believe that no country or group of countries will be able to counter American hegemony because today all countries are webs before American power. These people believe that non-state organizations will come forward to counter American hegemony. American supremacy will be challenged on the economic and cultural plane. 

i) Who can counter American hegemony?

ii) What is meant by “post-state institution”?

Ans. Voluntary organizations, media and intellectuals etc. 

iii) How can American hegemony be countered? 

Ans. These organizations can join together to form a worldwide network. Which can also include US citizens.

In 1992, Bill Clinton became the President of America. Instead of foreign policy, Clinton made domestic policy the target of her election campaign. Clinton won re-election in 1996 and thus remained in office for eight years. During the Clinton era, it seemed that America had confined itself to domestic affairs. In foreign policy, the Clinton administration shifted focus from hard politics such as military power and security to soft issues such as democracy promotion, climate change and world trade.

The first general elections were held from October 1951 to February 1952. The election, campaign, polling and counting took a total of six months. More than half of the total electorate cast their vote on polling day. The losing candidates also called these election results fair.

This use of universal suffrage silenced the critics. Hindustan Times wrote – It is being accepted everywhere that the Indian people successfully executed the biggest experiment of democracy in the history of the world.
