Eligibility Criteria For The Common Admission Test
If you are planning to take the upcoming Common Admission Test (CAT), then you must keep some points in mind regarding eligibility. We have mentioned these points in detail below.
- You need to have a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. In the case of belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), or Persons with Disability (PwD) categories, then 45% marks or equivalent CGPA is required. Your bachelor’s degree can be from any recognized university or educational institution.
- You can also apply for the CAT if you are appearing in the final year of your bachelor’s degree or are waiting for the results.
- You need to fulfill any one of the following conditions in order to apply for the CAT:
- A completed Bachelor’s degree with the required marks percentage.
- A completed Professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA (CMA)/ Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI) with the required percentage.
- Be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree with the required percentage.
- The respective Indian Institute of Management can verify your eligibility at various stages of the selection process.

Common Admission Test Reservation Criteria
Under the reservation criteria for CAT, several seats are reserved for people of different categories. Some important points related to these criteria are given in detail below.
- According to the legal requirements, the different percentages of seats reserved for the candidates are as follows:
- Schedule Caste (SC): 15%
- Schedule Tribe (ST): 7.5%
- Other Backward Classes- ‘non-creamy layer’ (NC-OBC): 27%
- Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): up to 10%
- 5% of seats are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD). The categories of disability are:
- Blindness and low vision
- Deaf and hard of hearing
- Locomotor disability, including cerebral palsy, leprosy, dwarfism, acid attack victims, and muscular dystrophy.
- Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness
- Multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses (a) to (d).
- Other ‘specified disabilities’ are mentioned in ‘The Schedule’ of the RPwD Act 2016.
- If you belong to the reserved categories, then you need to note the eligibility requirements carefully before applying.
- It should be noted that while it is the endeavor of IIMs that the candidates belonging to SC/ST/NC-OBC/EWS/PwD categories join the program, they have to meet the minimum eligibility criteria. A certain minimum level of performance is also to be considered for the admission process.
- You should read the updated description of the selection process followed by each IIM on their respective websites. No change in the category will be entertained after CAT registration. That’s why, you are advised to pay attention while registering.
