Common goals: On India and a five-nation tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits reflect (दर्शाना) India’s efforts to engage with (जुड़ना, संबंध स्थापित करना) others of the Global South

On his way to Brazil to attend the ongoing (चल रहा, जारी) BRICS summit (शिखर सम्मेलन), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made back-to-back (लगातार, एक के बाद एक) bilateral visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina. Each stop was with a view (दृष्टिकोण, राय) to enhancing bilateral (द्विपक्षीय) cooperation in fields (क्षेत्र, कार्यक्षेत्र) which included some common themes (concept, idea, concern) on pharmaceuticals (औषधीय, दवा संबंधी) and vaccines (टीका, रोग प्रतिरोधक दवा), digital technology, food security (खाद्य सुरक्षा) and critical minerals (महत्वपूर्ण खनिज). In Accra, India-Ghana ties (संबंध, रिश्ते) were upgraded to a comprehensive (व्यापक, विस्तृत) partnership, with discussions on helping Ghana become a “vaccine hub” for West Africa. In the Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, there was a major MoU on “Indian pharmacopeia”, to improve access to quality and affordable (inexpensive, economical, moderate, reasonable) generic ((in medicine) unbranded, untrademarked, non-proprietary) medicines from India. In Buenos Aires, President Javier Milei agreed to enhance (बढ़ाना, सुधारना) cooperation on critical minerals as well as Argentina’s vast (huge, substantial, massive) reserves of shale gas (natural gas which is trapped underground in a fine-grained sedimentary rock (shale)) and oil, while India pitched (to talk in a way while attempting to convince someone to buy or accept something) its pharma to Argentina. The three stops were in countries of the “developing world” or the Global South (the poor developing countries (of Asia, Africa, South America, amongst others)), and the onward ((of a journey) continuing or moving forward) journey to Brazil, and then to Namibia, also highlight (underscore, emphasize, underline, stress, call/draw attention to) India’s commitment (dedication, engagement, obligation, responsibility, onus, liability, accountability) to building alternative economic mechanisms (method, system, process, procedure, technique) to the “developed world” or Global North. India’s offer of cooperation for low-cost solutions to global challenges includes the promotion (advancement, furtherance, development, recommendation, advocacy, endorsement) of India-led international organisations such as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) (it is the major global initiative launched by the Government of India and it is dedicated to enhancing the resilience of infrastructure systems to climate and disaster risks. It includes national governments, international organizations, and private sector. Members benefit from access to global expertise, funding, technical support, research opportunities, innovative solutions, and international best practices) to these countries. Mr. Modi also made his signature (distinctively associated/connected with someone or something) pitch to the Indian diaspora (the people who spread/scatter from their own country to places across the world. Indian diaspora constitutes NRIs (Non-resident Indians) and PIOs (Persons of Indian origins)) — his speech in the Port of Spain, where Indian labour was brought by British colonial ventures (project, undertaking, endeavour, task, activity) since 1845, is one to note (take notice of, consider, bear in mind, pay attention to). Referring to the Indian ancestry (descent, origin, succession, parentage, lineage, heredity) of President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Mr. Modi said that the 35 million Indian diaspora worldwide were India’s “pride”.

It is also impossible to escape the deep connections between India and the five nations in terms of (with regard to; concerning, regarding; in connection with) political history. Each country shares a bond — colonies that suffered under British, Spanish, Portuguese and German forces — and why some of them joined the Non-Aligned Movement (the NAM was set up (in 1961) after the World War 2 with an aim to “create an independent path in world politics that would not result in member States becoming pawns in the struggles between the major power blocs (Western/Capitalist bloc aligned with the USA or Eastern/Soviet bloc aligned with the former Soviet Union)). They have all, at various points, committed to building South-South cooperation (South-South cooperation is a manifestation (display) of solidarity among peoples and countries of the Global South that contributes to their national well-being, their national and collective self-reliance and the attainment of internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), and India and Brazil’s role in founding (start, begin, initiate, establish, set up) the BRIC (The BRIC grouping was initially formed in 2006 with the aim of coordinating economic and political efforts among Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The acronym “BRIC” refers to the initial group of countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) that formed the economic bloc before South Africa joined in 2010, changing the name to BRICS) mechanism, along with Russia and China, and IBSA (a unique Forum which brings together India, Brazil and South Africa, three large democracies and major economies from three different continents, facing similar challenges. All three countries are developing, pluralistic, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious nations) with South Africa, was an outcome (end result, conclusion, consequence, aftermath), strongly pitching the interests (common concerns (in politics/business)) of the Global South. None of the countries on the tour can be called “anti-West (against the Western world)”, and New Delhi has had some differences (disagreement, difference of opinion, misunderstanding, dispute, quarrel, wrangle) with them over specific conflicts (war, warfare, armed conflict, military action, armed clash) (Ukraine and Gaza). The motivating force behind the ties, however, and consequently (accordingly, as a result of, in view of, therefore, on this/that account, because of this/that) Mr. Modi’s nine-day itinerary (a planned journey/route, way, path), is more about a common desire to look beyond (to look forward to a time in the future after some situation) the present global order to one that is more equal, representative, and sensitive to the needs of developing and under-developed nations.
