Coup in Sudan
The military should restore the transition (संक्रमण, परिवर्तन) government and allow free elections
The move (कदम, क्रिया, कार्य, व्यवहार) by Sudan’s military to dissolve (भंग करना, बंद करना) the Sovereignty Council (संप्रभुता परिषद) where it shared power with civilian (असैनिक, गैर-सैन्य व्यक्ति) leaders has thrown the African country’s fragile transition from dictatorship (तानाशाही, अधिनायकवाद, पूर्ण शासन) to democracy into chaos (अराजकता, अस्तव्यस्तता, विघ्न). Almost three years ago, tens of thousands of Sudanese rose against the regime (शासन, सरकार) of Omar al-Bashir in what they call a “revolution” that eventually (अंतत:, अंत में) led to the dictator’s fall (गिरना, पतन) in April 2019. Ever since, the military and leaders of the civilian movement (अभियान) came together to form a transitional government. In their agreement, the acting (अभिनय, संक्रमणकालीन) Prime Minister would run (manage, organize, control) the day-to-day (रोजाना, नियमित, प्रतिदिन) affairs (matters, concerns, activities (of public interest)) while the military chief would remain the leader of the Sovereignty (supreme power, hegemony, authority) Council for two years. Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the military chief, was scheduled to hand over (pass, assign, transfer) the leadership of the transitional government to the civilian leadership in a few weeks. Instead, he disbanded (disperse, disestablish, dissolve) the government, proclaimed (declare, announce, pronounce, state) himself the new leader, declared a state of emergency and imprisoned (incarcerate, put in prison jail, lock up, take into custody, confine, detain) the civilian leaders, including Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. Tensions were brewing (develop, loom, impend) in recent weeks. Pro-military mobs had been carrying out (conduct, perform, implement, execute, bring about) protests demanding the government’s removal amid (in the middle of, surrounded by; during) soaring (rising, increasing (quickly)) prices of essentials. Port Sudan, the country’s largest port, on the Red Sea, had been blockaded by a tribal group, with help from the military, which worsened (aggravate, intensify, increase, make worse, compound) the economic situation, including acute (severe, intense, serious) shortages of food, currency and fuel. The civilian leadership had accused the military of exploiting (take advantage of, make use of, utilize, capitalize on, benefit from) the economic crisis.
The overthrow (removal, fall, collapse, toppling, ousting) of the Bashir regime and the promised democratic transition were the best hopes for Sudan to end its international isolation (separation, segregation, setting apart), heal (alleviate, assuage, relieve, ease, lessen, mitigate) the wounds (blow, offence, affront; distress, trauma, anguish) of decades of oppression (persecution, abuse, ill-treatment, suppression) and state violence, and build a stable economic and political order in an otherwise violence-ridden Horn of Africa (Somali Peninsula (referring to lands of Somalia and eastern Ethiopia)). Sudan had taken the steps in that direction. Last year, the U.S. removed the country, which hosted Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and announced financial aid. Earlier this year, the IMF had reached a $50 billion debt-relief agreement with the transitional government. The civilian leaders had promised that they would send Bashir to The Hague (A city on the North Sea coast of the western Netherlands. The city is also home to the U.N.’s International Court of Justice) to prosecute him over allegations of war crimes (war crimes are violations of international humanitarian law (treaty or customary law) that incur individual criminal responsibility under international law), crimes against humanity (human beings, humankind, the human race) and genocide. The country was also gearing up (get ready, prepare, equip (oneself) for something) to organise its first free and fair elections in decades. But the power-hungry (selfish, egoistic, megalomaniac, aggressive, forceful) generals appear to be more concerned about protecting their interests, which they feared would be at risk had a democratic government taken full control of the country. After all, Sudan’s military cannot absolve (to set (oneself) free from, discharge, acquit, release, relieve, liberate, exempt) itself from whatever allegations Bashir is facing. But this time, it faces a stiff (firm, determined, resolute, strong, stubborn) challenge from the public. The protesters who brought down Bashir are back on the streets fighting the security personnel. A violent showdown is most likely (probable, possible, to be expected). Gen. Burhan should desist (abstain, refrain, forbear, hold back) from more violence. The military should release all the arrested leaders, restore the transition government and let free elections decide the future of the country.
