Far from over: On Israel missile strike on Syria
Israel is again violating (उल्लंघन करना, पालन करने में विफल होना) international norms (आदर्श, मानक, सम्मेलन) and laws with repeated strikes against Syria
The missile (a weapon (capable of self-propelled flight) that is thrown at a target or shot usually by a jet engine or rocket motor.) strike at Syria’s Latakia port on Tuesday is yet another reminder that the conflict (टकराव, युद्ध, सशस्त्र संघर्ष) in the Arab country is far from (से दूर, बिलकुल नहीं) over. This is the second strike (आक्रमण, हड़ताल) on Latakia, one of the busiest ports in Syria, within weeks, and Damascus (the capital of Syria) has blamed Israel on both occasions. The Israeli authorities (प्राधिकारी) have neither confirmed nor rejected the accusations (आरोप, अभियोग), but it is a fact that Israel has carried out (conduct, perform, implement, execute, bring about) air and missile attacks inside Syria in recent years. After the strike on Latakia in early December, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, “We are pushing back (force back, repel, fight off; refuse, reject, prevent) on the bad forces of the region day and night (दिन-रात, हमेशा, हर समय, लगातार).” The multi-faceted (बहुआयामी, विविध, भिन्न) Syrian crisis has evolved (विकसित करना, विकास, प्रगति) over the years. President Bashar al-Assad’s regime (शासन, सरकार), with help from Russia and Iran, has defeated most of the rebel (विद्रोही, असंतुष्ट, आंदोलनकारी) groups and recaptured almost all lost territories, except Idlib (a city in northwestern Syria). But Mr. Assad’s apparent (स्पष्ट, दृश्यमान, ध्यान देने योग्य) victory did not end the conflict. When Iran, which supplied men and weapons to Mr. Assad, built up (बनाया, विकसित करना, विस्तार करना) its influence in the country, Israel, which has been occupying (कब्जा करना, जीतना, आक्रमण करना) Syria’s Golan Heights (Internationally recognized as Syrian territory occupied by Israel. Israel seized this Golan Plateau from Syria in 1967 and the status of this territory “remains unchanged”) for decades (a period of ten years), viewed it as a security threat. Russia, whose primary focus in Syria is on the survival of the Assad regime and the protection of its own troops and assets deployed ((of troops) move into position, position, station, post, place) there, has largely (to a large/great extent) stayed away from (avoid, not get involved in) the Iran-Israel cold war (a state of political and military tension between two countries). This gives Israel a free hand (licence, freedom, latitude, leeway, flexibility) in Syria to target the Iranian and Hezbollah shipments.
The Israeli approach, however, has two key problems. One, the repeated strikes are a flagrant (obvious, blatant, evident, glaring) violation (breach, breaking, non-observance) of Syria’s sovereignty (autonomy, independence, self-government, self-rule, freedom). Israel, which has hardly (barely, almost not) upheld (confirm, endorse/approve, vindicate/validate; maintain, preserve, protect) international norms and laws when it comes to its security policies, is setting another bad precedent (model, exemplar, example, pattern; previous example/instance, prior instance). Second, Syria, devastated by the civil war (a war between organized groups within the same state or country), is emerging as a new front (a particular sphere of operation) in the Israel-Iran tussle (fight, clash, quarrel, argument, contention). In recent years, Israel has reportedly (supposedly, seemingly, apparently, professedly, ostensibly, purportedly) carried out sabotage (spoiling, ruining, wrecking, undermining something deliberately (to prevent an effort or plan intentionally from being successful)) activities inside Iran and assassinated (murder, kill) Iranian nuclear scientists. Iran, in return, has attacked Israel-linked vessels (ship, yacht, boat) in the Gulf and Mediterranean waters and enhanced supplies to Shia (relating to Shia branch/sect of Islam) rebel groups in the region. The Latakia strike has come at a time when international powers are trying to revive (restore, revitalize, renew, bring back) the Iran nuclear deal, post-2018. If these attempts collapse and Iran presses ahead (move ahead) with its nuclear programme, the chances of an Israel-Iran military conflict will soar (rise, increase, intensify (quickly)). Israel has already said that all options are on the table (provided for consideration, discussion) to “prevent” Iran from going nuclear. So, Syria appears to a pawn (the weakest; puppet) in this game between the big powers of West Asia. Enfeebled (weaken, debilitate, cripple, disable) by the civil war and dependent on Iran and Russia for survival, Damascus lacks (be without, be lacking, be deprived of, be short of) the political will (political desire/intention) and resources to either check Iran’s influence (power, authority, sway, leverage) or deter (prevent, stop, avert, impede) Israel’s attack. For Syria to see relative peace, there has to be a dial-down (reduction, decrease, lessening) in tensions (strained relations; strain, stress, pressure, unease) between Israel and Iran. A good beginning point would be the revival (improvement, re-establishment, restoration) of the nuclear deal.
