Pause and poise: On Congress' Rajasthan Cabinet reshuffle

Congress seems to have ended factionalism (दलबंदी, गुट्टबाज़ी) in Rajasthan with a Cabinet shuffle (मिश्रण, मिलाना, पुनर्व्यवस्थित करना)

The Congress reordered (पुन: व्यवस्थित करें) its house in Rajasthan by shuffling and expanding the Council of Ministers and enforcing (लागू करना, क्रियान्वित करना) a ‘one person, one post’ principle across its governmental and organisational wings (group). That this was done in a rather quiet and clean manner is a feat (achievement, accomplishment, attainment, triumph) for the party. The new Council has 30 members — 19 cabinet Ministers and 10 Ministers of State besides (के अतिरिक्त, इसके अलावा) the Chief Minister; three are women and four are Dalits. This reorganisation was long overdue (अतिदेय, लंबित) — the party that swears (promise, vow, guarantee, give one’s word) by its pro-Dalit politics had a Cabinet which did not have a single member from the community for nearly two years. The Congress had won 35 of the 59 SC/ST seats in Rajasthan in 2018 after having lost all but (all except; nearly, almost) two of them in 2013. The geographical (भौगोलिक, आंचलिक, प्रादेशिक) imbalance (असंतुलन, विषमता) in the Council too had become unsustainable (अरक्षणीय, अनुचित, अस्वीकार्य), with the eastern districts that elected more MLAs of the party severely under-represented (कम प्रतिनिधित्व). Sachin Pilot, under whose leadership the Congress fought the 2018 Assembly election, had been sidelined (अप्रधान व्यवसाय, उपव्यवसाय) after he rebelled (challenge, oppose, resist, defy) against CM Ashok Gehlot’s unilateralism (एकपक्षीयता) in 2020. Sunday’s reorganisation and expansion take care of (deal with, cope with, handle, manage, tackle) these anomalies (something different, abnormal, unusual; oddity, peculiarity, deviation, aberration, exception) to a large extent. Mr. Gehlot and Mr. Pilot have thus achieved a new equilibrium (balance, parity, equality, evenness), with some nudging (push, prod, encouragement, prompt) by the central leadership. The State is crucial to the national outcome of the 2024 general election — the Congress had lost all 25 Lok Seats in the State in 2019 to the BJP, just a year after it won the 2018 Assembly election.

It is on this count (a point for consideration) that the Congress should learn lessons from its self-inflicted (cause suffering to oneself (on his/her own)) disaster in Punjab on the eve of (a period or day before an important event) the Assembly election and continue to plan ahead in Rajasthan, if it is to have a fighting (tough, powerful, strong, robust) chance in 2023 and 2024. Mr. Gehlot is an astute (shrewd, sharp, clever, acute) manager of interest groups (a group of people with particular interests & ideas that tries to influence the government) — a fact borne out by his capacity to claim the CM’s post for a third term despite having lost two Assembly elections after two five-year terms in the past. He has also managed ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) across party lines (front, position). At 70, he has expressed plans to remain active for another 20 years. That may not be a great idea for himself or the party. His reputation (name, character, standing, stature, status, position) and legacy (something received from a predecessor or from the past) would be enhanced were he to work towards a transition (change, transformation), along with (together with, accompanying) Mr. Pilot, who, despite his rebellion (challenge, oppose, resist, defy) against Mr. Gehlot, has stayed a loyalist (supporter, admirer, champion) in the Congress. At 44, Mr. Pilot has shown promise (potential, ability, capability, capacity, potentiality) as a leader who can connect with the rural and the urban; the conservative (the traditionalist, the traditional, the conventional, the orthodox) and the modern. The party’s challenge is in converting the impatience of its young leaders into energy, and combining it with the political shrewdness (astuteness, cleverness, smartness) of its veterans ((long-serving) expert, seasoned, mature, established/experienced (person in an area of activity)) to create a productive (useful, valuable, effective, beneficial, helpful) compact (agreement, contract, deal, settlement).
