Hindi English Translation || Editorial || Separately together: On Opposition unity

Separately together: On Opposition unity

Opposition parties are too divided (अलग-अलग, खंडित) on several issues to form a national alternative to the Bharatiya Janata Party

With the 2024 Lok Sabha election 19 months away, the chorus (an expression of something by many people (at the same time)) on Opposition unity is getting louder once more. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the last one month has already been to Delhi twice, crooning (गाना, गुनगुनाना) the anthem (an inspiring song associated with a particular group/cause) to bring everyone together. He is not the only one singing this song. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has travelled to Delhi, Patna and Bengaluru to explore (अन्वेषण करना, जांचना, विचार करना) an anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) front (an organized (political) group (OR) a particular situation). The Left parties routinely call for (require, publicly ask/necessitate, demand) uniting all “secular (धर्मनिरपेक्ष, गैर धार्मिक) democratic forces (ताकत, समूह)” without really spelling out (समझाना, बताना) who will come within this bracket (group, grouping, category). But despite these parleys (चर्चा, बातचीत, संवाद), the possibility of a 1977-type Opposition alliance (संधि, गठबंधन) is unlikely (संभावना नहीं, संदेहास्पद, अकल्पनीय) to materialise (अमल में लाना, घटित होना). At an event organised by the Indian National Lok Dal in Haryana recently, several parties came together, but the Congress was pointedly (स्पष्ट रूप में, सारगर्भित ढंग से) excluded, prompting (तत्पर, कारण, उत्पन्न करना) Mr. Kumar to publicly state (express, announce, say/tell) that no Opposition alliance can be meaningful without it. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav is never found wanting (absent, missing, lacking, not there, not present) in taking on the BJP, but is now sceptical (संदेहवादी, उलझन में) about tying up with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress and is very hostile (विरोधी, असहानुभूतिपूर्ण, शत्रुतापूर्ण) to the idea of Mr. Kumar trying to expand his footprint (impression, effect, impact; the area taken control by someone/something) into Uttar Pradesh. The Congress is critical (significant, important, serious, crucial) for any Opposition unity and its former President Rahul Gandhi is walking from Kanyakumari to Kashmir with the slogan of ‘unite India’. But the party is also caught up in a storm (trouble, disturbance, controversy) of internal politics at the moment.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal is fancying his prospects (chance) of emerging as the alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and does not want to dilute (diminish, reduce, decrease, lessen, (the value of something)) his stakes (interest or involvement (in a race, competition, contest, battle, challenge)) in a larger formation. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is the second largest Opposition party in Parliament, has been eerily (peculiarly, oddly, in a strange and frightening way) silent on ‘opposition unity’. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is no longer exhibiting the enthusiasm (eagerness, keenness, excitement, willingness, readiness, commitment) she showed ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The TMC chose to abstain (not vote, decline to vote, refuse to vote (formally)) rather than (instead of) side with the Opposition in the Vice-Presidential election. It is not as if Opposition unity alone can defeat the BJP. In 2019 in Uttar Pradesh, the SP and the BSP came together but failed to push back (cause someone to move back by force; drive back, beat back, force back, repel, repulse, check, resist, fight back, hold off) the BJP in the State. Still, State-level partnerships of anti-BJP parties can be more viable (reasonable, practical, logical, sensible, effective) than national-level attempts. The more these parties try to show unity at the national or multi-State level, the more their contradictions (negation, denial, disallowance, disavowal, disconfirmation, rejection, disagreement, conflict, dispute) show up (appear, come out, materialize, happen ,occur, unfold). Focusing on each State separately, attending to the local particularities (individuality, originality, distinctiveness, uniqueness), might be more useful for these parties.
