Shiver and seizure: On the list of Congress Rajya Sabha candidates

Not many people expected the Congress to practise what it said it would at the Chintan Shivir (The Congress’ three-day ‘Chintan Shivir’, a brainstorming session began in Udaipur, Rajasthan, from May 13 to 15. The conclave would focus on the time-bound restructuring of the Congress, finding ways to combat the politics of polarisation and getting battle-ready for upcoming electoral challenges) or brainstorming (बुद्धिशीलता, विचारावेश) in Udaipur, Rajasthan, from May 13 to 15, but its list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha seems to have confirmed the views of the most cynical (निंदक, संदेहास्पद, अविश्वासी). Rarely has a political party abandoned (छोड़ देना, हटा देना) a set of principles within days of announcing it with such boisterous (उद्दाम, सक्रिय, ऊर्जावान) aplomb (अभिमान, आत्म-विश्वास, आत्म-आश्वासन) and self-righteousness (आत्म धर्म, आत्मसंतुष्टि) as the Congress has done in this case. The Udaipur Shivir resolved that the “principle of ‘one family, one ticket’ should be ensured”. A retirement age for leaders for elected posts was suggested, though no specific decision was made. These moves (कदम, कार्य, उपाय) would have been a good start, though not in the least sufficient, to stir (spur, drive, prompt, propel, prod, motivate, encourage) some fresh thought, infuse (instil, inject, impart, inculcate, introduce, implant, add) some new blood (रक्त, खून) and breathe new life into the party. But far from (से दूर, नहीं, बिलकुल नहीं) making any serious attempts to adhere (पालन करना, साथ रहना, कार्य करना) to this modest reform agenda (कार्यसूची, योजना, कार्यक्रम), the Congress party trampled (रौंद देना, अवहेलना करना, ध्यान न देना) all over it, if not in letter, most certainly in spirit. The exclusion of Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azab, who have been in the Upper House (उच्च सदन) for four and five terms, respectively, merely shows that scores have been settled rather than (instead of) fidelity (faithfulness, loyalty, allegiance, attachment, closeness; devotion, adherence; dependability, reliability) shown to any principles. Who will now be waiting for its 2024 Lok Sabha candidate list in which the Congress has promised to include 50% of those below 50 years of age?

At the end, of the 10 members the Congress will send to the Upper House, there are at least two who are the second members of their family to represent the party at the State legislature (law-making body or governing body; parliament, congress, assembly) or Parliament; all five seats that the party can win in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh — the last two States where it has Chief Ministers — have gone to leaders from outside. Even the candidature (candidacy; the state/condition/fact of being a candidate; candidate-ship) of Randeep Singh Surjewala is not from his home State of Haryana, but Rajasthan. As it happens (as expected, to be sure, in fact, as a matter of fact, truly, actually, really, in reality, as it happened, certainly, surely, undeniably), the Congress is holding (conduct, have, organize, convene, call, assemble) State-level congregations (gathering, assembly, a mass/group (of people)) across the country on June 1 and 2 to communicate the decisions taken in Udaipur. The Rajya Sabha list hardly forms an inspiring backdrop (situation, scenario, context) to that exercise. The party demands blood and sweat from its workers, and offers bounties (favour, reward; generosity, largesse) to a select few (only a small number of lucky people). All this has naturally triggered (cause, give rise to, lead to, be the cause of, bring about, generate, prompt) resentment (bitterness, indignation, displeasure, dissatisfaction, disgruntlement, discontentment, discontent, resentfulness, hard feelings) in the party, as there are no objective (aim, intention, purpose, target, goal) and defensible (justifiable, defendable, supportable, plausible, well founded, sound, sensible, reasonable, rational, logical, acceptable) criteria (basis, standard, norm. (criteria is the plural form of criterion)) that the Congress has followed. This utter disregard (inaction, inattention, heedlessness, carelessness, neglect, lack of attention, negligence, indifference), and in fact (actually, really, in reality), humiliation (embarrassment, loss of pride, loss of face, shame) of the ordinary worker has already brought the Congress to its knees. Any other party would have held those responsible for its string (series, succession, chain, sequence) of defeats to account (consider, regard as, reckon, view as, see as, take for, judge, adjudge, count, deem, rate, gauge, interpret as). The Congress brand of politics has been reduced to deal making among the small club of managers and power brokers without a support base (a group of people considered as supporting an organization/party). While that might suit those who control it, any analysis that pins hope on the Congress to be a source of democratic revival (comeback, re-establishment, restoration, reappearance; improvement, rallying, picking up, betterment) in India must be tempered (moderate, tone down, mitigate, alleviate, assuage, lessen, reduce) by a cold shower (a surprisingly chilly reaction/response; a discouraging experience/ circumstances, etc) of sobriety (the state of being sober; seriousness, severity, self-control, self-restraint).
