Show of cards: on Operation Sindoor and government’s delegations

Now is not the time to fight over the composition (संरचना, गठन) of the delegations

The Narendra Modi government has announced seven delegations (प्रतिनिधिमंडल) to canvas support for India in global capitals, in the aftermath of (के बाद, के परिणामस्वरूप) its recent conflict (संघर्ष, युद्ध, टकराव) with Pakistan. The declared intent of these delegations — with representatives from political parties, diplomats (राजनयिक, दूत) and strategic experts — is to demonstrate before the world, the unity and the character (चरित्र, पहचान) of India in the face of sectarian (सांप्रदायिक, पक्षपातपूर्ण) terrorism sponsored (प्रायोजित करना, समर्थन देना) by Pakistan. That the members are from several political, religious, caste and regional backgrounds, is in itself (स्वयं में, अपने आप में) a panoramic (comprehensive, all-inclusive, wide-ranging, extensive) show of the founding vision (the core idea, purpose, or guiding principle) of India. The modern Republic of India adopted (अपनाना, स्वीकार करना) for itself the principle that all diversities (विविधता) can coexist and flourish (फलना-फूलना, प्रगति करना) together. This is in stark contrast (के बिल्कुल विपरीत) with the idea of Pakistan, which was reiterated (दोहराना, पुनः कहना) with chilling (frightening, terrifying, disturbing/horrifying) clarity by its Army chief Asim Munir weeks before the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, 2025. The two-nation theory (दो-राष्ट्र सिद्धांत) that led to the bloody (damn) division (break-up, separation) of the subcontinent (a physiographical region in Southern Asia. It spans major landmasses from the countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) and the creation of Pakistan holds (believe, think, deem, reckon, be of the opinion) that Hindus and Muslims cannot be a part of the same national community. The decline of Pakistan and the rise of India in all fields of human progress prove beyond any doubt the fallacy (misconception, false idea/belief, mistaken belief, misbelief, false notion, misinterpretation, untruth) and the dangers of Pakistan’s vision and the promise of India. In a time of national challenge, a reiteration (the process of repeating something (some action) for clarity/emphasis; repetition, repeating, restatement, retelling, iteration) of that founding vision can be rejuvenating (revitalizing, refreshing, reviving, invigorating, encouraging).

But there was inadequate appreciation (acknowledgement, recognition, perception, understanding) of this fundamental distinction (difference, contrast, dissimilarity, variation, separation) between India and Pakistan in many capitals in the aftermath of Pahalgam. There are many reasons and India has to win back (regain, recover, reacquire, bring back, make good, obtain again (something lost, such as trust, support, or territory)) world opinion in its favour through its actions and words, at home (in one’s own country/place) and abroad. Statements by several world leaders appeared to place India and Pakistan on the same footing (standing, status, state, position, rank, grade). With decades (a period of ten years) of diplomatic (tactful, sensitive, subtle, delicate; consular, foreign-policy) efforts and its own performance as a pluralistic (relating to a system in which people of diverse ethnic, racial, religious, or social groups coexist in harmony irrespective of their various differences), secular (non-religious) democracy and a dynamic (effective, strong, powerful, potent, aggressive) economy, India has built a healthy (good, robust, strong) perception about itself in the eyes of (from the perspective of; according to the opinion or judgment of) the world. The capable and articulate (eloquent, fluent, expressive, vocal, effective, communicative) delegates can be expected to restate that message of India effectively (successfully, constructively, convincingly, strongly, powerfully) in world capitals. The Narendra Modi government showed statesmanship (statecraft, negotiations/discussions; the skilful management of a country’s public affairs) and wisdom in deciding to reiterate India’s unity and pluralism ((of people) the practice exists in harmony irrespective of various differences) through these delegations. But the controversy around the selection of Congress representatives and continuing statements by BJP leaders that label (call, term, name, describe, identify) political opponents (adversary, enemy, foe, nemesis, rival) as anti-nationals undermine (weaken, subvert, sabotage, damage) the very attempt of unity. The government and the Congress, the principal Opposition party, should have communicated better with regard to (in respect of, concerning, regarding, with reference to, in connection with) the composition of these delegations. But now that the names have been decided, the Congress should not object to the nomination (appointment, selection, choice, recommendation, naming, proposal) of its Lok Sabha MP, Shashi Tharoor, an international diplomat who has served as a Minister of State for External Affairs when it was in government. To politicise (to make something into a political issue) the nominations will serve no purpose (to have no use; have no purpose; ineffective, futile) and the Congress would only be seen doing what it accuses the BJP of: political mischief (bad behaviour, misconduct, mischievousness, playfulness, wickedness, perversity).
