Stop the slaughter: On Trump, Israel and the Gaza war

Trump must use his leverage (प्रभाव, शक्ति) to force Israel to end the war in Gaza

In his third White House visit in six months, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Monday (July 7, 2025), heaped praise on (अत्यधिक प्रशंसा करना) U.S. President Donald Trump for his “pursuit (खोज, तलाश) of peace and security... in the Middle East” and even nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize but stopped short of (except for, apart from, other than, besides, save, lacking) making any commitment (प्रतिबद्धता, संकल्प) on the most pressing (अत्यावश्यक, तात्कालिक) issue in West Asia today — a ceasefire (युद्धविराम) in Gaza. While indirect talks (वार्ता, बातचीत) between Hamas (Hamas is an Islamist militant group based in Gaza) representatives and Israel continue in Doha, Israel appears to be readying the forcible (जबरन, बलपूर्वक) relocation of Palestinians to the south of Gaza. Defence Minister Israel Katz says he has instructed the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) (इजरायली रक्षा बल) to come up with (प्रस्ताव करना, सुझाना) a plan to relocate the entire population of Gaza, of 2.3 million people, to the ruins (खंडहर, अवशेष) of Rafah, which the Israelis call a “new humanitarian (मानवीय) city”. There were reports in the Israeli media about the IDF chief, Eyal Zamir, opposing the plan, saying that “the hungry and angry” Palestinians “could turn on the IDF”. The IDF killing dozens of Palestinians, including children, in Gaza is a daily occurrence (घटना, प्रसंग); starving civilians (नागरिक, गैर-सैन्य व्यक्ति) are shot down in aid (सहायता, मदद) centres. Doctors who served in Gaza in the past 20 months have horror stories of babies being starved (suffer, die from hunger) to death or bodies of children being brought to hospitals with sniper (someone who shoots from a concealed place accurately and at a long distance) wounds in their heads. None of this moves (affect, upset, disturb) Mr. Netanyahu and his backers (champion, advocate, promoter, upholder, supporter, proponent) in the West (The Western world/civilization consisting of the majority of Europe & the North America), including Mr. Trump, who calls himself “a man of peace”.

Mr. Trump had said before the meeting that he would be “very firm” with Mr. Netanyahu on the need for a ceasefire. But words alone are not enough. Mr. Trump has the leverage to compel Israel to accept a ceasefire in Gaza. He demonstrated his influence in the final hours of the Iran-Israel war, publicly demanding that Tel Aviv (a city on Israel’s Mediterranean coast. (Jerusalem is the capital city of both Israel and Palestine, under their laws. Most other countries disagree. Most countries have their embassies with Israel in Tel Aviv)) turn back (go back, return) its fighter jets that had taken off to bomb Iran. Israel complied, after carrying out only a symbolic (indicatory, indicative, suggestive, symptomatic, token) strike. Today’s Israel is dependent on (reliant on someone or something; relying on, supported by, counting on, leaning on) the U.S. as ever before. During the war on Iran, Israel had to rely on (depend on, count on, bank on, lean on, resort to, or have recourse to) America for offensive (attacking, aggressive, combative, warlike, threatening, belligerent, bellicose) and defensive (defending, safe-guarding, shielding, protecting) support. Israel needs American weapons to continue its devastating (harmful, damaging, brutal, deadly, dangerous, disastrous, catastrophic) war in Gaza. And Mr. Netanyahu, who is facing an arrest warrant (It is a written order issued by a Court to a police officer to arrest and produce an offender or to search his premises for a particular thing) from the International Criminal Court (an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal that sits in The Hague, Netherlands. The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. As a court of last resort, it seeks to complement, not replace, national Courts. Governed by an international treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world’s first permanent international criminal court) for war crimes (According to the United Nations, a war crime is a serious violation/breach of international law committed against civilians or “enemy combatants” during an international or domestic armed conflict) and crimes against humanity (compassion, fellow feeling, kindness, sympathy, consideration; humankind, the human race, human beings, humans, people), needs American political and diplomatic (tactful, sensitive, subtle, delicate; consular, foreign-policy) backing (support, approval, endorsement, patronage, validation, authorization) to continue his wars across West Asia with impunity (exemption from punishment, freedom from punishment, immunity, indemnity, non-liability). If the U.S. continues to support Israel and refuses to use its leverage to end the Gaza war, it will be condemned (denounce, criticize, censure, castigate, hit out at, discredit, find fault with, slam) by future historians and fact-finders as a country that was complicit (associated/partnered/involved with others, mostly in a wrongful or illegal activity) in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians. There are no excuses for Israel to prolong (continue, extend, drag out, stretch out, perpetuate, go on with) this brutal war, which has killed an estimated 70,000 people in 20 months. The slaughter must stop, and Israel must be held accountable for its crimes.
