Tired, and retired: On Tennis star Ash Barty

As commerce (वाणिज्य, व्यापार) sucks out (remove, take away, withdraw) the off-season from the sports calendar, more athletes suffer burnout

Athletes rarely retire in their prime, not when they are numero uno (Italian, literally ‘number one’) in the sport. Tennis star Ash Barty’s sudden announcement that she is quitting (छोड़ देना, इस्तीफा देना) the game, at just 25, less than two months after she won the Australian Open and extended (बढ़ाना, विस्तार करना) her hold (पकड़, प्रभुत्व, बोलबाला) on the top ranking, has triggered (cause, produce, bring about, prompt) shock waves (a general feeling of blow/upset caused by an unexpected event) within the tennis fraternity (बिरादरी, समुदाय, समाज). For Australia, Barty was more than (इससे अधिक, बहुत, अत्यंत) a tennis champion, she is also a symbol of inclusivity (समावेशिता) because of her indigenous (स्वदेशी, मूल, आदिवासी) ancestral (पैतृक, विरासत में मिला, वंशानुगत, पारिवारिक) roots (जड़ें, मूल). Aesthetics (सौंदर्यशास्र, आकर्षण, निष्पक्षता) and grace defined her and tennis could not have asked for a better ambassador (राजदूत, प्रचारक, प्रतिनिधि, प्रतिपादक). But fatigue (थकावट, श्रम) and a loss of motivation derailed (पटरी से उतरना) her. Earlier, Naomi Osaka had spoken about dealing with depression (निराशा, उदासी) and taken a break (rest, respite, interval) from the sport while still in great form. At the other end of the spectrum (compass, gamut, ambit), the legendary (famed, popular, renowned, eminent, outstanding, celebrated, distinguished) Rafael Nadal seemed (appear, look) ready to fight off (push back, resist, force back; repel, repulse) age and injuries. But, even his indomitable (unconquerable, unbeatable, invulnerable) will (determination, firmness of purpose, will power, strength of character, resolution, resolve, single-mindedness, commitment, dedication, tenacity) must submit (give in, yield, surrender) to the demands of his body, and he is now ruled out (eliminate, reject, dismiss, prohibit, prevent) for four to six weeks following a rib (the ribs (a series of curved bones) partially enclose and protect the chest cavity, where many vital organs (including the heart and the lungs) are located) injury. His great rival (opponent, adversary, enemy, foe) Roger Federer is keen (enthusiastic about, interested in, attracted to) to extend his career into his forties. But he will have to cope with (deal with, handle, manage, tackle) the slow recovery from knee surgeries. The real surprise is when the athletes feel low on motivation even when they are in great shape (condition, state, health, state of health) physically, and in fine form (shape) with their game. In the early eighties, Bjorn Borg, like Barty, retired in his mid-twenties after tiring of the game mentally. Although Borg and Barty shocked the world with their retirement decisions, they are not the exceptions (anomaly, abnormality, inconsistency, special case; deviation, departure) in the world of sports: Nadal and Federer are, as they push (try hard, make every effort, do one’s best, do all one can, go all out, apply oneself, exert oneself) their body to extraordinary (unbelievable, remarkable, exceptional, astonishing; very great, considerable, tremendous) exertion (use, application, utilization (of force/influence)).

Sport can often juxtapose (place side by side; compare, place against another) opposites, blending (put together, mix, combine) pulsating adrenaline (a hormone/substance that is released in the body of a person who is feeling a strong emotion (such as excitement, fear, or anger) and it increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure and boosts energy supplies) with mind-numbing (extreme/intense, tedious, dull/monotonous) tiredness. Be it a triumph (victory, win, success) or a debilitating (weakening, disabling, exhausting, undermining, impairing, paralyzing, immobilizing) loss, it is played out in the open (in a situation in which something is no longer concealed or kept secret; made public; not secret) and it ushers in (start, begin, initiate, introduce) gargantuan (enormous, extremely large, huge/massive) expectations and immense (tremendous, massive, enormous, huge) pressure. Away from the limelight (the focus of attention, public attention, public notice, public interest, the public eye), the sportsperson has to deal with frenetic (hyperactive, fast and furious, intense) travel, cobwebs  of the mind, sore (painful, hurting, aching) limbs (arms, legs), and relentless (constant, continuous, non-stop, unceasing) scrutiny (examination, inspection, investigation). The money and the perks may be good but a heavy price is often paid. With sport having become a commercial engine (machine) drawing (obtain) top dollar, the athlete has to play all through the year. The off-season, when rest and recuperation (recovery (from illness/exertion), return to health, process of getting better, rehabilitation, healing) could be indulged in (give oneself up to, give way to, become involved in), no longer exists. Barty’s retirement, which seems permanent unlike (In contrast to; differently from) the break she took in 2014, may not be the last exit. Unless sports administrators show empathy (affection, fellow feeling, compassion), more sportspersons will seek an early closure. Borg attempted a feeble (weak, powerless, helpless; insubstantial, unsuccessful, ineffective) comeback (return) in the nineties; whether Barty will return remains a matter of conjecture. For now (for the time being, for the moment), the shock is real, and tennis is poorer.
