Warless Punjab: the Amritpal Singh arrest and keeping Punjab peaceful

The Centre and the State must guard against (के खिलाफ संरक्षण) the revival (पुनरुत्थान, पुनः प्रवर्तन) of separatism (पृथकतावाद)

The news, on April 23, of the arrest of Amritpal Singh, a self-appointed (स्वयं नियुक्त) campaigner for a separate nation for the Sikhs, was received by the public of Punjab with a sense of relief (राहत की भावना). He had been on the run for weeks, and now faces charges under the National Security Act (NSA) (राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा अधिनियम) as well as several first information reports (पहली सूचना रिपोर्ट). He has turned out to be a cipher (zero, nought/naught, nil) — neither he nor his cause (purpose, objective, aim, interest) of Khalistan (Khalistan movement (a Sikh separatist movement) seeking to create a homeland for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state, called Khālistān (‘Land of the Khalsa’), in the Punjab region) appears to have any significant support among Sikhs. The secessionist (separatist, dissident, protester, sectarian, nonconformist, extremist, radical) has been shifted to Dibrugarh jail in Assam, over 2,000 kilometres away from Punjab to avoid any potential (संभावना, मुमकिन) turmoil. Taking over as the head (chief, leader, boss), last year, of ‘Waris Punjab De’, a social organisation established (स्थापित करना) by the late (expired, dead, passed away) actor-turned-activist (कार्यकर्ता) Deep Sidhu, Mr. Amritpal’s rise to controversy and infamy (बदनामी) was as intriguing (fascinating, interesting, captivating, compelling) as it was quick. He styled himself after Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the militant (extremist, radical, fanatic, hardliner) leader who was killed in 1984 after many years of bloodshed (रक्तपात, नरसंहार) in the State. In February, Mr. Amritpal led a mob (a large, disorganized, and often violent crowd of people) that had stormed (attack, conduct an offensive on, make an onslaught on) a police station with swords and guns to free compatriots (patriot, nationalist; fellow citizen, fellow national) from custody, showing the State police and the government in a bad light (in a method that makes someone or something to look bad; so as to give bad impression). But then it was not entirely surprising. For months, he along with his supporters, flaunting (show off, exhibit, display ostentatiously/showily) swords, guns and sharp weapons, had moved across Punjab. The question still lingers (दीर्घ काल तक रहना) as to (के रूप में) how that was being allowed in Punjab, which has lived through an era (युग, अवधि समय) of bloody (vicious, cruel, savage, fierce, brutal) secessionism through the 1980s and 1990s.

Though he comes across as self-styled (so-called, self-appointed, self-avowed, self-professed), the Khalistan propagandist (relating to propaganda) appears to have supporters and handlers (secret agent) within and outside India. The State of Punjab is on the border with Pakistan, that has sought to instigate (provoke, incite, induce, foment, trigger) a section of the population into violence for decades (a period of ten years). The campaign (an act of soliciting (asking for/requesting) votes; an organized effort that seeks to influence the decision-making progress within a specific group) for Khalistan is active among the Sikh diaspora (the people who spread/scatter from their own country to places across the world. Indian diaspora constitutes NRIs (Non-resident Indians) and PIOs (Persons of Indian origins)) too. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the State is now patting itself on the back for the arrest, but the situation should not have reached this point. Even the police operation to nab (catch, capture, apprehend, arrest) him turned out to be an embarrassment (shame, humiliation, indignity, ignominy, loss of pride, loss of face), as he managed to flee and remain on the loose (free, at large, set free, escaped, on the run, unconfined, unrestrained, unrestricted). Though the instigator (initiator, agitator, fomenter) is now behind bars (in prison/jail), his call (requirement, need, demand) for violence and brazen (blatant/flagrant; bold and shameless; unashamed, unembarrassed) communalism, which went on with impunity (exemption from punishment, freedom from punishment, immunity, indemnity, non-liability) for several months, triggered (cause, give rise to, lead to, bring about, generate, provoke, stir up) memories of the polarisation (separation of two contrasting groups (based on different opinions/beliefs)) between Hindus and Sikhs caused by separatist (dissident, nonconformist, sectarian) terrorism that had pulverised (defeat utterly, annihilate, crush/vanquish) Punjab for long. The ripple effects were felt even in other countries. The Centre and the State, under the Bharatiya Janata Party and AAP, respectively, should work closely to get their administrative (regulatory, governmental, executive) actions and political messaging correct and effective to keep Punjab peaceful and insulated (protect, safeguard, shield) from the meaningless lure (temptation, enticement, attraction, appeal) of secessionism.
