Man of war: On why Donald Trump is no peacemaker

Donald Trump has made Israel’s war with Iran more dangerous for the region

Donald Trump is no peacemaker (शांतिदूत, सुलह कराने वाला). While out of power, he railed against America’s “forever wars”. He claimed (दावा करना) that if he were the President, the Ukraine war would never have started. The Trump base blamed America’s globalists for its forever wars. Yet, on Mr. Trump’s watch (कार्यकाल, निगरानी अवधि), Israel, Washington’s closest ally (सहयोगी राष्ट्र, मित्र राष्ट्र), began attacking Iran on June 13, 2025, even as the U.S. and Iran were still in talks (वार्ता, बातचीत). At first, Mr. Trump and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that America was not involved in the war, and warned Iran against targeting U.S. soldiers or bases in West Asia. Iran did not. Tehran’s response was directed solely (only, simply) at Israel, the aggressor (आक्रामक, हमला करने वाला). But a week later, when Israel was struggling to intercept (रोकना, बीच में पकड़ना) Iranian ballistic missiles (a self-propelled/rocket-propelled weapon designed to deliver a conventional/nuclear explosive warhead with great accuracy at high speed; projectile), American B2 bombers dropped (गिराना, छोड़ देना) bunker-busting (breaking bunker) bombs at Fordow, Iran’s most heavily fortified (protected, secured, ramparted) nuclear facility (सुविधा, केंद्र), while U.S. submarines (पनडुब्बी) fired Tomahawk missiles (it is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile primarily used by the United States Navy and Royal Navy. Designed for precise strikes against high-value or heavily defended targets, it can be launched from both ships and submarines. With its low-altitude flight path and advanced guidance systems, the Tomahawk can navigate complex terrain and evade enemy air defences) at the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear plants. This is now unmistakably (स्पष्ट रूप से, निर्विवाद रूप से) Mr. Trump’s war. He came to power promising peace. And in just six months, he has become a warmonger (aggressor, hawk, sabre-rattler, provoker, militarist, belligerent) and a globalist (वैश्विकवादी) aggressor.

When it comes to wars, the U.S. hardly (मुश्किल से, शायद ही) learns from its mistakes. It invaded (आक्रमण करना, घुसपैठ करना) Afghanistan in 2001, vowing (promise, swear, pledge, commit oneself, give one’s word) to destroy al-Qaeda. defeat the Taliban and “democratise (introduce a democratic system)” the country. But 20 years later, it handed it back to the Taliban. It invaded (and destroyed) Iraq in 2003, lying that Baghdad possessed (have) weapons of mass destruction. It invaded (and destabilised) Libya in 2011 in the name of (for the sake of, at the behest of, for the reason of, on behalf of) protecting Libyans from their government. In the case of Iran, America’s intelligence ((military/political) information, facts, details, particulars) agencies concluded (come to a conclusion, infer, deduce, assume, decide) in March that Iran did not have an active weaponisation (the act of making something into a weapon) programme. Iran once signed a nuclear agreement with the U.S. and other major powers and accepted checks (examination, inspection, scrutiny, assessment; control, constraint, restraint, limitation) on its nuclear programme. It was Mr. Trump who tore up the deal. Iran again joined talks with the U.S., and it was Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister, who destroyed diplomacy (international politics, foreign affairs, foreign policy; negotiations, discussions, talks, dialogue (related to international politics)) this time. This war will have serious consequences (conclusion, development, result, aftermath, outcome, implication, repercussion, ramification) for West Asian stability (steadiness, firmness, solidity, secureness, strength) and global order. Major powers will now have less incentive (impetus, boost, stimulus, fillip) to trust Mr. Trump’s overtures for dialogue. Smaller powers will have greater incentive to join the arms (weapons of war, weaponry, firearms, guns, artillery, armaments) race for their own survival. North Korea will never give up (abandon, renounce, forgo, discontinue, desist from) its nukes (a nuclear weapon). If Iran’s regime (government) survives this storm (attack, onslaught, fight; outburst, eruption), it could seek (try, aim, attempt) to rebuild its nuclear programme. If it decides to strike (attack, hit) American bases, the war could spiral into (deteriorate, decline, degenerate, worsen, get worse) something more dangerous. Mr. Netanyahu’s unchecked (unrestrained, unconstrained, uncontrolled, unrestricted, unbridled, uncontainable, rampant, runaway) militarism, which is in part (partially, somewhat, relatively, in some measure, to a certain extent/degree) aimed at protecting his hold (grip, grasp, foothold; control, influence, leverage, authority, sway) on power at home (in one’s own country), has plunged (bring something suddenly into a particular condition or state; thrust, drive, push, force) the region into a deep security abyss (a catastrophic/disastrous/awful situation). Mr. Trump has made it catastrophically (disastrously, ruinously, tragically, awfully, terribly, deadly, lethally, fatally) worse by turning Israel’s war into America’s war. Darker days lie ahead (be going to happen in the future; to be in the future) for West Asia.
