  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Choose the active form of the sentence given below.
The application form for the art academy was submitted by Damian last night.
    Solution
A sentence is usually in active voice, when the subject performs an action toward an object. When the sentence is changed to passive voice, the object takes the position of the subject, such that the meaning is maintained.
For example: I helped you. (Active voice)
You were helped by me. (Passive voice)
The verb that 'expresses the action (helped) done by the subject (I)' is in the active voice.
The verb that expresses what is done to the subject is in the passive voice.
The given sentence is in passive voice; Damian is the subject, 'was submitted by' is the verb in the passive form.
From the options, D is in the active voice: Damian is the subject that performs the action (submitted) toward the object (the application form). Hence D is correct.
Option A has changed in meaning 'was forced to'. Moreover, the sentence is still in passive form. It refers to an action carried out 'by' the subject whereas the active voice refers to the subject carrying out an action.
Similarly, option B has changed in meaning, 'took the decision' and 'because of his father's interest' are extensions that are not required. It is not mentioned in the main sentence about his decision, or his father's interest.
Option C has also changed in form: is responsible for his submission'. The verb 'submitted' has changed to a noun 'submission' and a new verb 'is' is introduced.
These options are not the active voice of the given sentence, hence A, B and C are incorrect.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
Rewrite the following sentence by changing its voice (Active or Passive):
A stone struck me on the head.
    Solution
A sentence is in the active voice when the subject performs an action.
A sentence is said to be in the passive voice when the subject receives an action.
The given sentence is in the active voice, as the subject 'stone' performs an action 'struck' against the object 'me on the head'.
If this sentence is changed to passive voice, then the subject is also changed, in order to retain the meaning of the sentence.
So, the object takes the place of the subject and vice versa and the word 'by' is introduced as now the subject receives the action by the object. The verb form of the sentence is also changed from active form to passive.

'Subject (A stone) + verb (struck) + object (me) + prepositional phrase (on the head)' changes to:
'New subject (I) + verb (was struck) + prepositional phrase (on the head) + by + new object (stone)'
The passive form of 'struck' in the simple past tense is 'was/were struck'. Since the subject 'I' is singular, the verb will also be singular 'was struck'.
This can be seen in option D, hence it's the right answer.

Option A: The tense of the sentence has changed from past 'struck' to the present tense 'am'. While changing the voice of the sentence, the tense does not change.
Option B: The object has been changed in the sentence. According to the preferred format, 'me' is the object here and 'on the head' is a prepositional phrase that tells us 'where'. It won't be modified to 'my head'.
Option C: The tense of the sentence as changed from simple past tense 'struck' to past perfect tense 'had been struck'.
Hence options A, B and C are incorrect.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
The sentence has been given in the Active/Passive voice. From the given options, choose the one which best expresses the given sentence in the Passive/Active voice.
Mona was writing a letter to her father. [Advanced]
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in the active voice.

The correct answer is C) A letter was being written by Mona to her father.

Option C is correct as the given sentence is in the active voice and to transform it into the passive voice the subject of the given sentence (Mona) comes in the place of the object(a letter) and vice versa. Also, as the given sentence is in the past continuous tense, 'being' is used.

Options A, B, and D are not correct as the sentence structure is wrong, the tense used is not the same as in the given sentence, and the given sentence is not in the simple past tense respectively.

  • Question 4
    1 / -0
The sentence has been given in the Active/Passive voice. From the given options, choose the one which best expresses the given sentence in the Passive/Active voice.
    His pocket has been picked.
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in the active voice.

The correct answer is D)Someone has picked his pocket.

Option D is correct as the given sentence is in the passive voice and to transform it into the active voice, the subject of the given sentence (His pocket) comes in the place of the object(who has picked his pocket- 'someone') and vice versa. Also, as 'has been' is used in the sentence and 'has' shows that the transformed sentence must be in the present perfect tense.

Options A, B, and C are wrong as 'they' cannot be used in the place of the subject in the transformed sentence, the sentence structure is wrong(also it's tense), and the subject is not mentioned respectively.

    Directions For Questions

Below a set of instructions is given on preparation of instant coffee. Using the instructions, fill in the blank in the sentence given below.
    (i) Boil water.
(ii) Take one teaspoon each of instant coffee and sugar.
(iii) Add boiling water and stir the mixture vigorously.
    (iv) Warm milk separately.
    (v) Add warm milk to the mixture and stir.
(iv) Hot instant-coffee is ready to drink.

    ...view full instructions

    First water _____.
    Solution
This question is asking you to change the active voice to passive voice. Firstly, we need to identify what the tense of the sentence is. 'Boil' is in simple present tense. According to the rules of changing active voice to passive voice, we must change the verb to its past participle form and add a 'to be' verb before it such as is/am/are.
From the given options, option B) is being boiled is incorrect as it indicates that the water is still boiling. This is in present progressive tense.
Option C) is boiling is also incorrect as it is in the present continuous tense. Option D) will be boiled  is a future tense phrase and so it is incorrect.
Hence, option A) is boiled is correct, since we are using both 'is' and the past participle form of the verb 'boiled'.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
Choose the option that correctly transforms the given sentence into reported speech:
She said to me, "Keep quiet and listen to my words".
    Solution

The two ways of relating what a person has said are 1)direct and 2)indirect (reported).

In the direct speech, the exact words of the original speaker are repeated.

In the indirect speech (reported speech), the exact meaning of what the speaker told is expressed but not necessarily in the speaker’s exact words.

Option B is correct as the appropriate introductory verb 'ordered' is used,

Options A,C and D are wrong as 'requested', 'ordered' and 'told' are not the appropriate introductory verbs to be used respectively.

The correct answer is B)She ordered me to keep quiet and listen to her words.

  • Question 7

Choose the missing question word below that would give you one of the answer options marked. (You do not have to give the answer.) Choose from (A), (B), (C) or (D). There is an example at the beginning (0).
    (0) ____did the first man land on the Moon?
    (i) in 1968 (ii) in 1969 (iii) in 1970
    (A) When (B) Where (C) Who (D) Why
    Answer : (A)

____ is Dutch Elm disease so called?
    i. Because it is only found in Holland
ii. Because it was first discovered in Holland
iii. After the Dutch workers who discovered in cause
    Solution
Wh-questions are used to ask for information. Such type of questions begin with what, where, why, whom, when, who, which, whose and how. Yes-No cannot be the answer to Wh-questions.
Who is used to ask for what or which person or people.
Why is used to ask for a reason.
Where is used to ask at what place or position.
Which is used for asking about choice.
In the given sentence, 'why' should be used as Wh-question to ask the reason of Dutch Elm disease.
Thus, option B is the correct answer.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Rewrite the following sentence by changing its voice (Active or Passive):
My uncle promised me a present.
    Solution
The given sentence is in the active voice, as the subject 'My uncle' performs an action 'promised' against the object 'me'.

'Subject (My uncle) + verb (promised) + direct object (me) + indirect object (a present)' changes to:
'New subject (I) + verb (was promised) + indirect object (a present) + by + new object (my uncle)'
The passive form of 'promised' in the simple past tense is 'was/were promised'.
This can be seen in option B, hence it's the right answer.

Option A: The given sentence has two possible passive forms, as there are two objects: direct object (me) and indirect object (a present). When the indirect object 'a present' is made the subject, then the direct object 'me' follows the verb. The new object 'my uncle' should come last, and shouldn't be followed by the direct object 'me'.
So, this option does not have the correct passive form.
Option D: Similarly, in this option, the object 'my uncle' should come last and not be followed by the indirect object 'a present'.
Option C: The tense of the sentence has changed from past simple 'was promised' to past perfect tense 'had been promised'.
Hence options A, D and C are incorrect.
  • Question 9

The correct answer is A)They were laughing at the clown.

Option A) is correct as the subject of the given sentence(the clown)  comes in the place of the object (them) and vice versa. Also, the main verb (laughed) is used in the verb+ing form.

Options B, C and D are not correct as at is the correct choice of preposition,'laughed' represents the past tense,( not the past continuous tense), and the object doesn't come in the place of the subject respectively.

  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Change the following sentence to passive voice:
India defeated Australia in the 20-20 world cup cricket finals.
    Solution
Active voice is when the subject does an action. Passive voice is when the subject receives an action.
When you change a sentence from active to passive, you change the position of the subject from subject to object. The same goes for the object.
In order to keep the meaning unchanged, words like 'by' are introduced to say that the action is performed 'by' the object (original subject.)
While changing from active voice to passive, the form of the verb changes. But, the tense does not change.
Option A: In the given sentence, the verb form 'defeated' changes to 'was defeated', the new subject is Australia.
Hence, the sentence will be: Australia was defeated by India in the 20-20 World Cup cricket finals. So, option A is correct.
Option B is incorrect because 'was' and 'by' are not added. This changes the meaning of the sentence.
Option C is incorrect because the tense has changed. It indicates the past perfect continuous tense.
The tense of the given sentence is in simple past, and must remain in the same tense.
Option D is incorrect for the same reason. The tense has changed to past continuous tense.
