  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Change the following statement into indirect speech.

The strike leader said, "Let us show the bosses that we are united."
    Solution
Indirect Speech is used to report something in our own words.
Suggestions are often reported using the verbs suggest, insist, recommend, request, demand and propose followed by that clause. 'Ordered' is used in case of command or order.
The given sentence is an example of a request whose indirect is formed by verb + to-clause.
Thus, option A is the correct answer according to the rules.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
    Convert in indirect speech:
Tom said to me,"Can you tell me the time?"
    Solution

The two ways of relating what a person has said are 1)direct and 2)indirect (reported).

In the direct speech, the exact words of the original speaker are repeated.

In the indirect speech (reported speech), the exact meaning of what the speaker told is expressed but not necessarily in the speaker’s exact words.

Option D is correct as the given sentence is in the simple present tense and the appropriate introductory verb 'asked ' is used.

Options  A,B, and C are wrong as 'can', 'me' and 'he' cannot be used respectively.

The correct answer is DTom asked if I could tell him the time.

  • Question 3
    1 / -0
Write the sentence beginning with "I think Tom.... ":
I think they should have offered Tom the job.
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in active voice.

The given sentence is in the active voice.

The correct answer is C) I think Tom should have been offered the job (by them).

Option C) is correct as the subject of the given sentence(they) comes in the place of the object and vice versa. Also, the main verb (offer) is used in the third form (been offered).

Options A, B, and D are not correct as the given sentence is not in the past tense, present perfect tense, and present perfect continuous tense respectively.

  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Change the following sentence from exclamatory to assertive:

To think that we should both be here! [Advanced]
    Solution
Exclamatory sentences are those sentences which express a state of sorrow, joy, wonder or excitement. To change such sentences into indirect speech, specific words are added to the sentence like exclaimed with joy, exclaimed with wonder, cried with grief, wish, etc.
The given sentence shows astonishment. The sentence would become - It is strange that we should both be here. Options A and C are not assertive sentences. Option B doesn't show astonishment.
Thus, option D is the correct answer.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Transform the following sentence from interrogative to assertive sentence:

What though we fail the exam?
    Solution
If the interrogative sentence starts with 'what' question word then 'it does not matter' should be used followed with 'that' to convert it into assertive.
Thus, option B is the correct answer according to the rules.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
Change the voice of the following sentence:
They have built a new hospital near the airport.
    Solution
A sentence is in active voice when the subject performs an action.
The given sentence is in active voice: subject (they) performs an action (have built) against the object (a new hospital).
Its voice will hence be changed to passive voice.
When a sentence is in passive voice, the subject will receive the action.
While changing the voice, the meaning should not change. Hence the word order must be altered, in a way that the subject receives the action. So, the subject is replaced by the object and vice versa.
Also, the tense ('have built' is in present perfect tense) must remain the same, to keep the meaning intact.
Option C: The sentence is in passive voice.
The subject 'a new hospital' receives the action 'has been built'. It is alright to omit the object 'by them' since the meaning is implied. Also, the verb form 'has been built' remains the same 'present perfect tense'.
    Hence option C is correct.
Option A: 'Is built' is in simple present tense and is different from the original tense of the sentence.
Option B: 'Was built' is in simple past tense.
Option D: 'Had been built' is in past perfect tense.
These verb forms do not express the same tense as well as overall meaning of the original sentence.
Hence options A, B and D are wrong.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Out of hundreds of planes flying to international destinations only two were fortunately shipwrecked last year.

Choose the option that best corrects the sentence.
    Solution
Since the word "fortunately " modifies the word "planes" these should be placed close, but not together so as to retain the subject-verb agreement. Hence Option C is correct. The rest of the options do not place the qualifying adverb close to the subject or do not retain the subject-verb agreement, hence these are incorrect.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Convert the following conversation in the indirect form:
Ann: Why don't you come and stay with us for a few days?
Ben: Of course , I would love to come and stay there.
    Solution

The two ways of relating what a person has said are 1)direct and 2)indirect (reported speech). In direct speech, the original speaker's exact words are repeated. In indirect/reported speech, the exact meaning is expressed but not necessarily using the original speaker's exact words. Pronouns and possessive adjectives usually change from first or second person to the third person except when the speaker is reporting his own words. Sometimes a noun can be inserted to avoid doubt.

When we turn direct questions and exclamations into indirect speech, they are converted to affirmative statement .( ? and ! is not used).

Option D is correct as when we convert the given direct question to indirect speech which starts with the question word why , why is used in the indirect speech, to which is used to join the dialogues in the conversation, the appropriate introductory verbs asked and replied are used, the simple present tense is changed to simple past tense, you to he, us to them, and positively is used as Ben agrees to stay with them (of course).

The other options are wrong the simple present tense, said can't be used and of course is not reported.

The correct answer is D)Ann asked Ben why he didn't come and stay with them for a few days to which Ben showed positivity and replied that he would love to come and stay there.

  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Transform the following sentence from affirmative to negative without changing the meaning:

    Tom loved his mother.
    Solution

A sentence is a group of words that is complete in itself.

There are four main types of sentences:

Simple or declarative sentence- It is used for information purpose.

Command or Imperative sentence- It is used to make requests or give orders, commands etc.

Question or Interrogative Sentence- It is used to ask questions and ends with a question mark(?).

Exclamatory Sentence- It is used to express emotions and ends with an exclamatory mark (!)

An affirmative sentence contains a positive form which can be transformed to negative form without changing the meaning just by changing a few words.

The correct answer is C)Tom was not without love for his mother.

Option C is correct was not without love means with love which also means that Tom loved his mother.

The other options are wrong as the meaning of the given sentence is changed , the subject is not at its place, and Tom loved his mother.

  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Transform the following sentence from exclamatory to assertive:

Alas, he died so young! [Advanced]
    Solution
While changing an exclamatory sentence to assertive, the structure of the sentence changes. The structure of the given exclamatory sentence is: Alas! subject (he) + verb (died) + clause/phrase (so young). When a sentence of this structure is transformed to assertive, the structure of the assertive sentence is: It is a pity + subject + verb + phrase/clause. The option that follows this structure is option A, hence it's correct. Option B is incorrect as it does not follow this structure, Alas does not mean 'I wish'. Option C is incorrect as 'I wish' is not the translation of 'Alas!' and the rest of the sentence has completely changed in meaning, the original sentence makes the incident (him dying so young) sound unfortunate whereas option C wishes for the incident to happen. Option D is incorrect because 'Alas!' is not translated to 'I think' while transforming to assertive. In an assertive sentence, 'Alas!' is replaced by 'it is a pity' or 'it is a matter of sorrow'.
