Weekly Quiz Competition
  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Write the given sentence in passive voice:
The man next door disappeared one week ago.
(nobody / has seen / him /since then)
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in active voice.

The correct answer is C)The man next door has not been seen by anybody since last week.

Option C is correct as to use the words given in the parentheses the subject should remain at its place and been should be added after has not and before seen (using not because of disappeared).

The other options are wrong as is, was , and had cannot be used in the passive form of the given sentence.

  • Question 2
    1 / -0
    Change the voice:
Ann has invited some of Ann's friends to her flat.
    Solution
In active voice, the subject performs an action.
In passive voice, the subject receives an action.
The given sentence is in the active voice, as 'Ann' (subject) performs the action (has invited) towards the object (some of Ann's friends').
When you convert it to passive voice, the object (some of Ann's friends) now becomes the subject, and vice versa.
Option B: In this sentence, the new subject 'Some of Ann's friends) receives the action 'have been invited' by the new object.
Also, the tense of the given sentence is present perfect tense: has + past participle (invited). (It states that an action began in the past and has completed in the immediate past.)
As the tense does not change, and 'have been invited' is also the present perfect tense (passive form), B is the correct option.
Option A: 'Were invited' is in the simple past, whereas the sentence is in present perfect.
Option C: 'Are invited' refers to the simple present tense, not the required present perfect.
Option D: 'Had been invited' refers to past perfect tense.
    Hence A, C and D are incorrect.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
    Write in reporting speech:
Your friend said to you: Let him do what he wants.
    Solution

The two ways of relating what a person has said are 1)direct and 2)indirect (reported speech). In direct speech, the original speaker's exact words are repeated. In indirect/reported speech, the exact meaning is expressed but not necessarily using the original speaker's exact words. Pronouns and possessive adjectives usually change from first or second person to the third person except when the speaker is reporting his own words. Sometimes a noun can be inserted to avoid doubt.

When we turn direct questions and exclamations into indirect speech, they are converted to affirmative statement .( ? and ! is not used).

Option A is correct as when we convert the given direct sentence to indirect speech, to is added , the introductory verb advised is used (let), wants is changed to wanted.

The other options are wrong as that, wants, and had wanted can't be used.

The correct answer is A)My friend advised me to let him do what he wanted.
