  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Change the sentence by altering the normal word order:
(the sentence formed must be meaningful)
I had hardly left the house when my mother called me back. [Advanced]
    Solution
An effective way to make language more emphatic when using English is by inverting a sentence's normal word order.
For example, 'I have never eaten such a flaky croissant.' is a regular sentence, with the word order: subject (I) + verb (have never eaten) + object (such a flaky croissant). To add emphasis, the auxiliary verb comes before the subject: Never have I eaten such a flaky croissant. ('Never' is an adverb and the main verb is 'eaten')
The given sentence is in the normal word order: subject (I) + verb (had hardly left), it must be changed to add emphasis, hence option A is incorrect.
Option C is correct as the normal word order is altered for emphasis, where the auxiliary comes before the subject as it should.
Option B is incorrect because the subject must follow the auxiliary (had), but here it comes after the object (the house).
Option D is incorrect as the than-clause must follow the previous clause to present a contrast, but here it has been brought in the beginning. So the sentence isn't comprehensible.
  • Question 2

From the below-mentioned options, identify the sentence which is in active voice:
    Solution
A sentence is in active or passive voice depending on whether its verb is in active or passive voice.
A verb is in active voice when its form shows that the subject does something/some action.
A verb is in passive voice when something is done to the subject. In passive voice, the doer of the action may appear in the phrase, "by .....". This could be one easy way of identifying a sentence in passive voice.
In option A, "A stone" is the subject, which performed the action -"struck". AS the subject did the action, this sentence is in active voice.
In option B, the  "The ball" is the subject.  Here, the subject does not perform the action. It is the receiver of the action. It "was caught"  by the child. i.e An action was performed on the subject -"the ball". Hence, this sentence is in passive voice and not the correct answer.
In option C, "I" is the subject.  Here, the subject does not perform the action. It is the receiver of the action. We know this because of the words, "I was caught unaware". i.e An action was performed on the subject -"I". Hence, this sentence is in passive voice and not the correct answer.
In option D, the word,  "he" is the subject. Here, the subject does not perform any action. The sentence says-He "was cheated" by his own wife i.e "He", the subject is the receiver of the action. Hence, this sentence is in passive voice and is not the correct answer.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
From the below-mentioned options, identify the sentence which is in active voice:
    Solution
A sentence is in active or passive voice depending on whether its verb is in active or passive voice. A verb is in active voice when its form shows that the subject does something. A verb is in passive voice when something is done to the subject. In passive voice, the doer of the action may appear in the phrase, "by .....". This could be one easy way of identifying a sentence in passive voice. However, in some cases, this phrase is omitted.
The correct option is A. In option A, "little drops of water" is the subject. Here the subject does something i.e. "form" a mighty ocean. Hence, it is in the active voice and option A is correct.
In option B, "Handicraft items" is the subject, which are "sold" in the fair. The action is done to the subject. Note the phrase, " by the tribals" indicating the tribals as the doer of the action. Hence, this sentence is in the passive voice. Option B is incorrect.
In option C, "He" is the subject. He was"scolded". i.e. an action is performed on the subject. Note the phrase, "by his school teacher" indicating the school teacher as the doer of the action. Hence, this sentence is in the passive voice. Option C is incorrect.
In option D, "the invitations" is the subject. They were "posted". Here, the sentence does not carry the phrase, "by ......" -it is omitted. However, the action ("posted")  is done on the subject ("the invitations"). Hence, this sentence is in the passive voice. Option D is incorrect.

  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Correct the given sentence, if necessary:
A mirror oval hung across the wall, with an antique finish given to it.
    Solution
An adjective is usually placed before the noun that it modifies. This is for an adjective that is in the attributive position, i.e., it comes before the noun. When an adjective is in the predicative position, i.e., when it follows the noun, the adjective does not follow it immediately; it follows a linking verb, thereby complementing the noun. (example: I am tall, I is the pronoun, 'am' is the linking verb and 'tall' is the adjective)
In the given sentence, the underlined word "oval" is an adjective; it follows the noun "mirror". (It cannot modify the verb that it precedes because adjectives don't modify verbs.) Hence option D is incorrect.
Option A is correct because the adjective is placed before the noun "mirror" that it modifies, it describes the shape of the mirror.
In option B, the adjective is placed before the noun "wall", but it doesn't make sense, walls cannot be oval, hence B is incorrect.
In option C, the adjective "oval" is placed before the noun "finish", which is abstract. Abstract nouns are ideas or states (finish means the manner in which an item is completed), they are not concrete, hence they do not have a shape (oval) and C is incorrect.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Choose the sentence in which the usual order of words is altered: [Advanced]
    Solution
An effective way to make language more emphatic when using English is by inverting a sentence's normal word order.
For example, 'I have never eaten such a flaky croissant.' is a regular sentence, with the word order: subject (I) + verb (have never eaten) + object (such a flaky croissant).
To add emphasis, the auxiliary verb usually comes before the subject, resulting in the inversion: Never have I eaten such a flaky croissant. ('Never' is an adverb and the main verb is 'eaten')
In option C, the main verb 'excited' comes before the subject 'the people', keeping the rest of the sentence, in the normal word order, intact. Hence this sentence shows inversion and option C is correct.
Option A is incorrect because the sentence is in the normal word order.
Option B is incorrect because this too has a sentence in the normal word order.
Option D is incorrect because the words are not altered in this way: verb + subject + object, but instead this way: verb + object + subject + phrase (that modifies the object). The words are in a jumble, they are incoherent.

Fill in blank [2] with a suitable option:
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in the active voice.

The correct answer is B) is poured in a cup as the sentence represents present tense and the main verb is used in the third form.

Options 'A' is not correct as the sentence is not in the past tense,

Option 'C' 'To be pour' cannot be used and the sentence. There are two reasons behind not using it in the sentence: 1) 'To be pour' is grammatically incorrect it should be 'To be poured'. 2) The sentence is not in the future tense, hence 'to be pour' cannot be used in the given sentence.

Option 'D' 'Will poured' is grammatically incorrect because, with 'Will', the first form of the verb is used, hence this is incorrect.

Thus option 'B' is the correct answer.

  • Question 7

Change the direct narration into indirect narration.
The teacher said to the students, "You must study hard for the test on comprehension."
    Solution
As the given sentence in the direct speech is in the simple present tense, we will change it to simple past tense in the indirect speech.
Oprion A - 'The teacher told the students that they will study hard for the test on comprehension.' is incorrect as the sentence is in the simple future tense. Thus option A is incorrect.
Option C - 'The teacher told the students that they could study hard for the test on comprehension.' is incorrect as 'could' is the past tense of 'can'. Also, 'could' is used for possibilities or while explaining a hypothetical situation. Thus option C is incorrect.
Option D - The teacher told the students that they are going to study hard for the test on comprehension.' is incorrect as 'is going' is used to form the sentence in the present continuous tense. Thus option D is incorrect.
Option B - 'The teacher told the students that they had to study hard for the test on comprehension.' can be used here as we often use 'had' with an infinitive verb instead of 'must' in the indirect speech. Thus option B is the correct answer.
'The teacher told the students that they had to study hard for the test on comprehension.'
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Change the following sentences into passive voice:
Did Harry not open the gate of the chamber?
    Solution
In the given sentence, which is in active voice: 'Harry' is the subject and 'gate of the chamber' is the object. The main verb is 'open'.
The object of the verb in the active voice becomes the subject in the passive voice. i.e. The phrase, 'gate of the chamber' becomes the subject in the passive voice. As the sentence is in simple past tense, the auxiliary verb 'was' is to be used along with the subject in the passive voice. The past participle form of the main verb (opened) is to be used.
Option A is incorrect as the auxiliary 'did' is used instead of 'was'.
Option B is incorrect as the auxiliary 'were' can be used only with a plural subject. In the passive voice, the subject (gate of the chamber) is in singular form. Hence, 'was' has to be used.
Option C: Here, the phrase 'gate of the chamber' is the subject. The auxiliary 'was' is used along with the singular subject. The past participle form of the verb (opened) is used. Hence, this option is correct.
Option D is incorrect as option C is the correct answer.

  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Choose the correct passive form from the options given below:
How old are these houses? When ____ built?
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Choose the most appropriate passive form for the given sentence:
The porter was carrying the luggage.
    Solution
In order to convert the given question into passive voice, let's understand the difference between active and passive voice.
Active voice emphasises on the person who does the action, whereas passive voice emphasises on the action itself. For example:
Active: The thief stole my car.
Passive: My car was stolen by the thief.
The object 'My car' comes first and the subject 'the thief' is put after the verb in the passive voice.
The doer in the given sentence is: 'The porter'
The verb in the given sentence is: 'was carrying'
The receiver of the action in the given sentence is: 'the luggage'
In the passive voice, the receiver becomes the subject. Right after the subject, we place a verb and then the receiver of the action (object) and the remaining clause, if any. We also use 'by' before the object to show that the action was performed by the object.
As the given sentence in the active voice is in the past continuous tense, we will use 'was/were' and 'being' with the verb in the past participle form to form the sentence in the past continuous tense in the passive voice.
Hence, 'The luggage was being carried by the porter.'
Thus option A, B and C are incorrect.
CORRECT ANSWER - D - 'The luggage was being carried by the porter.'
