  • Question 1
    1 / -0
    Aeroponics is also called as
    Solution
Soil provides water and minerals to plants and in addition to water and minerals, air to roots. But there are some problems associated with this set up like lack of air in conditions of water-logging, uneven distribution of minerals in soil and soil solution and consequent uneven supply of minerals, nonspecific supply of minerals not as per requirement of a particular type of plant. Also in future, there will be added pressure on land because of population growth and other associated problems.
Hence soilless cultivation is tried as a solution to these problems. There are two major types of soilless cultivation- hydroponics i.e., growing plants in a solution of mineral nutrients and aeroponics i.e., growing plants in an aerosol spray of mineral nutrients.
The aeroponics promises the greater availability of air and consequently better respiration and efficient utilization of minerals as compared to hydroponics.
  • Question 2

Which phenomenon is exhibited by the figure above?

    Solution
Hydroponics is a technique of growing plants in a nutrient medium of defined concentration. This technique was first developed by Von Sachs and has been successfully demonstrated for lettuce, tomato, etc. It is also called soilless cultivation.
So, the correct answer is option A.
  • Question 3

The haemoglobin like pigment is found in
    Solution
Root nodules of leguminous plants harbor nitrogen fixing bacteria Rhizobium. The Rhizobium is micro aerobic bacteria and the nitrogen fixing enzyme is sensitive to oxygen. The bacteria contains hemoglobin like pigment, leg hemoglobin, which acts as an scavenger and binds with the free oxygen. Thus, the enzyme nitrogenase can carry on nitrogen fixation unhindered.
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Cultivation of plants by placing the roots in the nutrient solution is called as
    Solution
The technique of cultivation of plants in a nutrient medium is called as hydroponics, which was first devised by Von Sach. The most important resource, that soil provides to plants is the minerals. Hence, if plants are grown in a nutrient medium, soil may not be necessary for cultivation of plants. Important vegetables like cucumber, lettuce and tomato have been grown using this technique.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
What are applications of this system?

    Solution
Hydroponics is the art of growing plants in a nutrient medium of defined concentration. This technique was first developed by Von Sachs and has been successfully demonstrated for lettuce, tomato etc. It is also called as soil less cultivation.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
What is labelled as A and what is the pH of media A?

    Solution
Hydroponics is the art of growing plants in a nutrient medium of defined concentration. This technique was first developed by Von Sachs and has been successfully demonstrated for lettuce, tomato etc. It is also called as soil less cultivation.
The two main types of hydroponics are solution culture and medium culture. Solution culture does not use a solid medium for the roots, just the nutrient solution. The three main types of solution cultures are static solution culture, continuous-flow solution culture and aeroponics.
The ideal pH range for most hydroponic crops is between 5.5 and 6.5. pH is important because it affects availability and absorption of several of the 17 atomic elements needed for plant growth. Maximum absorption of these elements is found at pH readings 5.5 to 6.5. When pH falls below this range many of the macro elements (N, P, K, etc.) have less availability, and absorption of the micro nutrients can reach toxic levels.
  • Question 7

Nostoc is found in symbiotic relationship with
    Solution
Very few organisms are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen, among which the important ones are cyanobacteria. Nitrogen fixation cyanobacteria occur in specialised cells called heterocysts. Cyanobacteria are seen in a variety of associations with bryophytes. Nostoc, cyanobacterium occurs in symbiotic association with hornwort Anthoceros. Within a hornwort thallus, there are Nostoc cavities which hold Nostoc cells.
Thus, the correct answer is option C.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Which element is essential for IAA synthesis?
    Solution
Zinc is an important essential micronutrient. Zinc is required for the activity of carbonic anhydrase, auxin (Indole acetic acid, IAA) biosynthesis. Zinc is also an activator of certain carboxylases and dehydrogenases. It has also been reported that zinc deficiency induces oxidative environment, which results in degradation of auxin.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
'Little leaf disease' is developed due to deficiency of
    Solution
Zinc is an essential micronutrient for plants. It is required for activity of carbonic anhydrase, auxin biosynthesis and activator of certain carboxylases and dehydrogenases. Its deficiency leads to little leaf disease, leaf rosette formation, short internodes, interveinal chlorosis appearing first marginally on older leaves, followed by necrosis, white bud and stunted growth.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Which of the following does not fix atmospheric nitrogen?
    Solution
Blue green algae like Nostoc and Anabaena have some thick walled cells, called as heterocysts, which are specialized for nitrogen fixation. Azotobacter  is aerobic, free-living soil microbe, which plays an important role in the nitrogen cycle in nature, fixing atmospheric nitrogen, into ammonium ions.
Spirogyra is a free living filamentous green alga.
