  • Question 1
    1 / -0
The given figure shows some types of inflorescences.
Select the option that correctly identifies them.

  • Question 2
    1 / -0
Identify the type of modified root and select the correct statement regarding it.

    Solution
A tuberous root is an enlarged fleshy root modified as a storage organ (dahlia stores inulin) with shoots produced at one end and roots produced at the other. The Inulin molecules obtained from dahlia tubers are called Dahlin. After undergoing a special treatment, dahlia tubers yield pure laevulose that is sometimes called Atlanta Starch or Diabetic Sugar, which is frequently prescribed for the needs of diabetic and consumptive patients and has been given to children in cases of wasting illness.
For extraction of the Inulin, the roots or tubers are sliced, treated with milk of lime and steamed. The juice is then expressed and clarified by subsidence and filtration, the clear liquid being run into a revolving cooler until flakes are produced. These flakes are separated by a centrifugal machine, washed and decolourized, and the thus purified product finally treated with diluted acid, and so converted into laevulose. This solution of laevulose is neutralized and evaporated to a syrup in a vacuum pan.

So, the correct answer is 'It is the tuberous root of Dahlia that stores inulin as reserve food.'
  • Question 3

Select the pair which contains monocotyledonous families.
    Solution
Liliaceae (Lily family), Poaceae (Grass family) both are monocotyledous families due to following characteristcs.
    Habit: plants are herbs
    Root system: fibrous
Leaves: with parallel venation, sheathing leaf base in Poaceae
Flower: floral whorls in multiple of 3, ie 3 or 6,Perianth (petaloid)
    Androecium -6 stamens
    Gynoecium-3 carpels, syncarpous superior
    Example:Liliaceae-Lilium, Tulipa
                    Poaceae: Triticum, Oryza
So, the correct answer is 'Liliaceae and Poaceae'

  • Question 4

    cymose or
    racemose
    Actino-
    morphic
    CTricarpellary
    Solution
In family Fabaceae, the inflorescence is indeterminant or recemose, the flower is zygomorphic, with five petals-standard (large outer), wings (smaller pair inbetween) and keel (innermost smallest, partially fused)
The number of stamens in Liliaceae are 6 arranged in two whorls of 3 each or 3+3 arrangement. The anthers are monosacculate.
The gynoecium in Fabaceae is monocarpellary, with ovules on marginal placentation.
    So, the correct answer is 'A - Racemose, B - Zygomorphic, C - 3 + 3, D - Monocarpellary'
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Which of these is not a fruit?
    Solution
Cauliflower is one of several vegetables in the family Brassicaceae. It is an annual plant that reproduces by seed. The cauliflower head is composed of a white inflorescence meristem. Typically, only the head is eaten i.e the edible white flesh. When cauliflower is mature, heads appear as clear white, compact, and 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in diameter, and should be cooled shortly after harvest.
So, the correct answer is 'cauliflower'
  • Question 6

Monocotyledonous seeds possess a single cotyledon which is represented by
    Solution
In monocots, particularly the grasses where the fruit is a caryopsis, the cotyledon forms a shield like structure the scutellum. Its function is to digest the endosperm and direct the nutrients to the developing embryo. It does not form green leaf like structures as in dicots.
So, the correct answer is 'Scutellum'
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Which of the following floral formulae corresponds to Family Liliaceae?
    Solution
Family Liliaceae have bracts. Rhey are bisexual, actinomorphic, having tepals with valvate aestivation and epipetalous. Ovary is superior trilocular with many ovules showing axile placentation. Fruit type is capsule. Seed is endospermous.
Thus, the correct answer is option D.
  • Question 8

Many pulses of daily use belongs to one of the families given below. Identify.
    Solution
    $$\textbf{Correct option:(B)}$$

    $$\textbf{Explanation for correct option:}$$

$$\bullet$$ Many plants belonging to Fabaceae family are sources of pulses, edible oil, dye, fibres fodder, ornamentals and medicine.

$$\bullet$$ Most of the pulses of daily use (like gram, arhar, sem, moong, soyabean) belongs to Fabaceae family hence it is also known as Pulse family.

$$\bullet$$ Hence the correct option is (B)

  • Question 9

The part of gynoecium that determines the compatible nature of pollen is?
    Solution
Stigma is the terminal receptive part of the pistil which functions as landing platform for the pollen grains. It also determines the compatibility of the pollen grains.
  • Question 10

In a spadix inflorescence the spathe encloses
    Solution
    A) Umbel inflorescence has flowers with pedicels of almost equal length and appears to arise from a common point due to the reduction in the main axis.
It is the characteristic of the Umbelliferae family.
    B) Biparous or Dichasial cyme inflorescence in which growth of the flowering axis is continued by two branches when the growing point of parent axis is changed into a flower.
    ex-Dianthus or Bougainvillea.
    C) Catkin inflorescence is a compact unisexual spike that often hangs.
    ex-Mulberry.
    D) Spadix inflorescence has a fleshy spike that is covered by the spathe.
    ex-Banana.
So the correct option is 'Spike'.
