Identify the ecologist from the given hints.
    (i) He carried out long-term ecosystem experiments using outdoor plots.
(ii) In his experiments, he showed that increased diversity contributed to higher productivity.
    Solution
George David Tilman is an American ecologist. It is said that a stable community should not show too much variation in productivity from year to year; it must be either resistant or resilient to occasional disturbances (natural or man-made), and it must also be resistant to invasions by alien species. David Tilman’s long term ecosystem experiments using outdoor plots show how these attributes are linked to species richness in a community. Tilman found that plots with more species showed less year-to-year variation in total biomass. He also showed that in his experiments, increased diversity contributed to higher productivity.
So, the correct answer is 'David Tilman'.

The upright pyramid of number is absent in ?
    Solution
    Correct Option: C
    Explanation:
    • A forest pyramid of umber shows secondary consumers on the top.
    • As we move down, there are the primary consumers and then, the producers.
Hence, the upright pyramid of number is absent in forest.

According to Charles Elton, which is not correct?
    Solution
    Correct answer-(D)
Charles Elton, an English biologist, developed the idea of ecological pyramids. These pyramids are therefore also termed as Eltonian pyramids. An ecological pyramid may be defined as a graphic representation of the numbers or biomass or status of accumulated energy at different trophic levels in a food chain in an ecosystem. The Eltonian pyramid is a concept which relates to food consumption efficiency. According to Charles Elton, carnivores are at the top of the pyramid. Producers are at the bottom of the pyramid. They manufacture food and provide nutrition for the next level. Energy trapping is high at the base of the pyramid, i.e., producer level. The energy is highest at the producer level as it traps energy from the sun. It gradually decreases as one moves to subsequent levels, i.e. herbivores and different carnivores.

Which of the owing statements regarding the maintenance of carbon cycle in the biosphere are correct?
    a. Plant utilize solar energy to convert $$CO_2$$ and water into cellular materials and produce oxygen that animals consume.
    b. Oxygen produced by the plants during carbon assimilation is not a byproduct.
    c. Energy used by an animal comes from the oxidation of plant material releasing $$CO_2$$ that escapes into the atmosphere.
    d. All decaying organic matter on the earth is ultimately degraded by molds and bacteria to yield $$CO_2$$ that escapes into the atmosphere.
