    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the passage and complete the activity given below:[/passage-header]      Corona bypass surgery is undoubtedly a very significant achievement of modern medical science. But one ponders over certain pertinent questions such as the cost involved and the ultimate benefit.
The human heart is nothing but a four-chambered muscular pump which supplies blood to all parts of the body. Being on active pump, the heart itself requires a lot of energy and receives its own blood supply via certain vessels called coronary arteries. By a process called "atherosclerosis", fat particles are deposited on the inner wall of the lumen of the coronary arteries which eventually reduce the size of the lumen and produce obstruction to the free flow of blood. The portion of the heart which suffers from lack of blood supply becomes weaker as a pump and gives rise to a typical chest pain called "angina". When such blockage is total, the corresponding heart muscle dies and then one suffers a "heart attack". In all these circumstances, heart surgeons perform a special type of operation known as "coronary bypass surgery".
In this surgery, a blood vessel is taken (usually from the leg of the patient) and then grafted on the heart in such a way that when blood flows through, it bypasses the narrow segment of the diseased coronary artery. The concept is to divert the flow from the narrow artery, inside which there is already a 'traffic congestion' and in this respect, it is synonymous to road bypass.

Fill in the blank with a suitable option:
All parts of the human body receive blood from the __________.
    Solution
Option B: 'Heart' is the accurate word here, as it's mentioned in the beginning: "The human heart is nothing but a four-chambered muscular pump which supplies blood to all parts of the body".
    Hence option B is correct.
The passage neither mentions nor indicates these organs: Lungs, Stomach and Liver.
Hence the Options A, C and D are incorrect.

"The golden age of answers" implies that there are _____________
    Solution

Option C is the correct because the technology revolution has enabled us to get access to infinite information through internet, phones, computers, etc. Thus, "The golden age of answers" implies that there are better tools for searching information.
Option A is incorrect because "The golden age of answers" means we have access to infinite information. Thus, ‘a diverse technology available in present times’ is not the appropriate answer.
Option B is incorrect because "The golden age of answers" means we have access to infinite information. Technology has given us opportunities to connect with friends on Facebook; however, it is not the appropriate answer for this.
Option D is incorrect because "The golden age of answers" means we have access to infinite information. Pop ads are advertisements about products in the market. Thus, option D is not the right answer.

    This 'revolution' has brought _________.
    Solution
Option A is the correct answer because the sentences ‘We no longer bother to remember stuff we can easily look up. We don't search for addresses as we use the GPS. We spend more time connecting with friends on Facebook than connecting with real friends’ and ‘And what's most exciting about our age of answers is its potential to change the quality of our lives’ makes it clear that technology revolution has brought radical changes in our lives.
Option B is incorrect because although technology has made our lives much easier and comfortable, it can also cause damage in several ways. Thus, technology revolution has helped us but has not brought complete success.
Option C is incorrect because technology revolution has changed the quality of our lives. Thus, ‘rotation in our lives’ is not the right answer.
Option D is incorrect because technology revolution has changed the quality of our lives for better. Thus, ‘merely problems in our lives is not the right answer.

The menace of plastic in the state truly came to the fore when thin plastic bags choked the drains and caused water-logging during the 2005 floods in Mumbai. In the aftermath of the incident, the government proposed a complete ban on plastics but later decided to ban only bags of thickness less than 50 microns. Plastic degrades slowly which means it remains in the state due to its widespread utility. But the anti-plastic movement is gaining steam in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur where ‘Say no to plastic’ campaigns have led to various citizens carrying cloth or paper bags for grocery and general shopping, while at the policy level, Mahabaleshwar recently issued a blanket ban on plastic usage in the hill station.

A large number of people are consuming packaged food because it has become a matter of convenience, pleases the taste buds and fills your stomach. Also, it is important to note the quality of packing used for these products and whether additives are used or not to increase their shelf-life. For example, dairy products like milk that come in tetra packs come without any additive and due to no contact with air, it remains fresh for a long period of time. The ready-to-eat food products are especially laden with preservatives and can have excess oil in form of trans fats, which can be a threat to health. I don’t really advocate bakery products whether they are packaged or not. The problem with canned or processed food is that they have excessive salt or sugar. Cooking at home is always a healthy option. For example, even simply eating dal-chawal is a far healthier option over junk food. What one needs to do is a little bit of time management and planning. We should stick to those food items that we are genetically used to such as Indian food cooked by traditional methods.

[passage-header]Read the following passage carefully and answer the question that follows:[/passage-header]In the history of mankind, dance as an artistic form of expression is extremely old. Evidence of dance as a creative form is available in ancient literary text, painting and sculpture from prehistoric times to the medieval period. There are now seven major classical dance styles-Bharatnatyam, originated from Tamil Nadu, Kathakali from Kerala, Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh, Odissi from Orissa, Manipuri from Manipur, Kathak from Northern Region and Satriya from Assam. Most of these classical dances trace their roots to the grammar and techniques of movement codified in the Natya Shastra compiled by Bharat Muni, sometimes between 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD. Dance, according to Bharat Muni, is classified into two main aspects, Nritta and Nritya. Nritta in the broadest sense is 'Pure abstract dance', which basically does not interpret or communicate a specific theme. It is the movement of limbs and body to the accompaniment of percussion instruments playing a specified rhythmic cycle. Nritya is the aspect of dance which is expression and which communicates the meaning or theme of a song through gestures of the hands, facial expression and body movements. Stylized interpretation when conveyed through body movements and facial and hand gestures is known as Angika Abhinaya, through words as Vachika Abhinaya and through costumes and makeup as Acharya Abhinaya.

[passage-header]Read the passage and answer the given question:[/passage-header]In 1933-34, I got my first chance to play in Test cricket in India. The MCC team under Douglas Jardine was in our country to play three test matches. Fortunately, I was able to do sufficiently well to retain my place in all the three tests.
During the test matches, my younger sister, Laxmi had given me an autograph book to get the autographs of visiting players. I had carefully put down MCC touring team in 1933- 34 on one of the pages. Under the heading, I took autographs of all the 16 players who visited India.
Two months later, I had an occasion to approach Gandhiji for his autograph, which my sister was very keen to have. There were quite a few people present when I made my request. Gandhiji smiled and leafed through the pages of the autograph book and then underneath the names of the MCC players wrote -'17- M.K Gandhi'. I immediately understood the greatness of the man and what had prompted him. By that unforgettable signature as the seventeenth man of the MCC team he showed that although he was prepared to fight the British Government tooth and nail for the independence of India, he had nothing against the common man of England and was prepared to put himself down as the seventeenth man of the English Cricket team.

    ...view full instructions

Why did Mahatma Gandhi put himself down in the English team?
    Solution

The clue for the answer is in the following sentence from the paragraph: "By that unforgettable signature as the seventeenth man of the MCC team, he showed ............he had nothing against the common man of England (which means the common people in Britain)". The word "he" refers to Gandhiji.

The English cricket team is usually made up of common people of Britain. Hence, by including himself among the English cricket team members, Gandhiji showed that he had nothing against the common people of Britain. It means, he had no objection to be listed as one among them. Hence, option C is correct.

Option A: The word, "British" means relating to Great Britain or United Kingdom. It is quite a broad term and could relate to the people or the language or the Government or anything related to Great Britain or United Kingdom. Gandhiji was against only the British Government. Hence, to mention that "he had nothing against British" is a very broad generalisation, which is incorrect.

Option B is incorrect because it is mentioned in the passage that he was prepared to fight the British Government for the independence of India. So, it is clear that he was against the British government. Hence, to say that "he had nothing against the British Government" (which means the opposite) is incorrect.

Option D is incorrect because option C is correct.
