16 workers work 9 hours a day to complete a project in 25 days. How many days will 25 workers take to complete the project if they work for 6 hours a day?

    Solution
Let x be the required number of days.
The given problem involves three variables, namely number of workers, number of hours and number of days.
    Thus, we have:
Number of workers Number of hours Number of days
    16 9 25
    25 6 x

Step 1: Consider the number of workers and the number of days. When the number of workers increases, the number of days decreases. Thus, it is an indirect variation.
Therefore, the multiplying factor is 16/25.

Step 2: Consider the number of hours and the number of days. When the number of hours decreases, the number of days increases. Thus, it is an indirect variation.
Therefore, the multiplying factor is 9/6.
    ∴ x = 16/25 × 9/6 × 25 = 24 days

Geeta, who is a typist, types 2880 words in one hour. Assuming that her typing speed is constant, how many words does she type in 45 minutes?

    Solution

    1 h = 60 min

Number of words typed by Geeta in 60 min = 2880

Therefore, number of words typed by Geeta in 1 min = 2880/60 = 48

    Therefore, number of words typed by Geeta in 45 min = 48 x 45 = 2160

Thus, Geeta types 2160 words in 45 minutes.

Use the following information to answer the next question.

Mithun purchased a refrigerator and spent Rs 700 to get it transported to his house. However, his wife did not like its colour. Mithun then sold the refrigerator to his friend for Rs 7885 and suffered a loss of 5% in the transaction.

At what price had Mithun bought the refrigerator?

    Solution

Selling price (S.P.) of refrigerator = Rs 7885

    Loss = 5%

This means that if S.P. is Rs 95, then C.P. = Rs 100

    Therefore, if S.P. is Rs 7885, then C.P. = Rs (100/95 x 7885) = Rs 8300

Amount spent on transportation of the refrigerator, i.e., overhead expenses

    = Rs 700

Thus, price at which Mithun bought the refrigerator = Rs (8300 – 700)

    = Rs 7600

In a book-fair, 16% discount is offered on each book. If the marked price of a book is Rs 250, then what is the selling price of the book?

    Solution

    M.P. of the book = Rs 250

    Discount = 16%

    ∴ Discount = 16% of Rs 250

    = Rs (16/100 x 250)

    = Rs 40

    ∴ S.P. of the book = M.P. − discount

    = Rs (250 − 40)

    = Rs 210

Thus, the selling price of the book is Rs 210.
