During the period between 1953 and 1974, lots of influence on the politics of Kashmir was exercised by the Congress party.

The people speaking Punjabi language started agitating for a separate state for themselves in the late 1950s. This demand was finally accepted and the states of Punjab and Haryana were created in 1966.

According to the 1991 census, there were 1.2 million Bodos in Assam which makes for 5.3% of the total population in the state.

India adopted a democratic approach to the question of diversity. Democracy allows the political expressions of regional aspirations and does not look upon them as anti-national.

The ''Kashmir issue ''is a dispute between India and Pakistan.

SGPC stands for Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee. Master Tara Singh was a prominent Sikh religious and political leader and was one of the early leaders of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC).  He was leader of the Akali movement and a supporter of the freedom movement but opposed to Congress ’policy of negotiating only with the Muslims. After Independence, he was the senior most advocate of formation of separate Punjab State.

The State of Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1^st , 1963, as the 16^th State of the Indian Union. It is bounded by Assam in the West, Myanmar on the east, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on the North and Manipur in the South.

Sikkim Congress stood for greater integration with India. The assembly first sought the status of ‘associate state ’and then in April 1975 passed a resolution asking for full integration with India. This was followed by an organised referendum that put a stamp of popular approval on the assembly ’s request. The Indian Parliament accepted this request immediately and Sikkim became the 22nd State of the Indian union.
