Which of the following vaccines is given only at birth?

    Solution

In most tuberculosis (TB) endemic countries, bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) is usually given around birth to prevent severe TB in infants. The neonatal immune system is immature. Our hypothesis was that delaying BCG vaccination from birth to 10 weeks of age would enhance the vaccine-induced immune response.

Hence, the correct option is (B).

    A radish-cabbage cross is a type of

    Solution

Brassicoraphanus or raddish-cabbage crop is an intergeneric hybrid between the genera Brassica (cabbages, etc.) and Raphanus (radish). The name comes from the combination of the genus names. Both diploid hybrids and allopolyploid hybrids are known and share this name.

Hence, the correct option is (B).

The parasphenoid bone in frog forms the

    Solution

The parasphenoid bone in frogs is situated beneath the sphenoid at the base of the skull. This is a flattened, inverted T-shaped bone. So, the correct answer is that the parasphenoid bone in frogs forms 'Floor of cranium'.

Hence, the correct option is (B).

Which of the following is not a property of lymph?

    Solution

The primary parts of the immune system include the bone marrow and thymus. The bone marrow is extremely important to the immune system because all the body's blood cells (including T and B lymphocytes) originate in the bone marrow. B lymphocytes remain in the marrow to mature, while T lymphocytes travel to the thymus. Therefore it is not the property of lymph.

Hence, the correct option is (C).

  • Question 5

Polymerisation of amino acids to form a polypeptide is correct:

    (1) Activation of amino acids, Termination of polypeptide synthesis, Elongation of polypeptide synthesis, Initiation of polypeptide synthesis.

    (2) Initiation of polypeptide synthesis, Activation of amino acids, Elongation of polypeptide synthesis, Termination of polypeptide synthesis.

    (3) Termination of polypeptide synthesis, Elongation of polypeptide synthesis, Activation of amino acids, Initiation of polypeptide synthesis.

    (4) Activation of amino acids, Initiation of polypeptide synthesis, Elongation of polypeptide synthesis, Termination of polypeptide synthesis.

    Solution

Activation of amino acid: Amino acid activation (also known as aminoacylation or tRNA charging) refers to the attachment of an amino acid to its Transfer RNA (tRNA). Aminoacyl transferase binds Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to amino acid, PP is released. Aminoacyl TRNA synthetase binds AMP-amino acid to tRNA. The AMP is used in this step.

Initiation of polypeptide synthesis: The ribosome assembles around the target mRNA. The first tRNA is attached at the start codon.

Elongation of polypeptide synthesis: The tRNA transfers an amino acid to the tRNA corresponding to the next codon. The ribosome then moves (translocates) to the next mRNA codon to continue the process, creating an amino acid chain.

Termination of polypeptide synthesis: When a stop codon is reached, the ribosome releases the polypeptide.

Hence, the correct option is (D).

The junction between which of the following is called the motor-end plate?

    (a) Motor neuron

    (b) Actin filament

    (c) Sarcolemma of the muscle fiber

    (d) Myosin head

    Solution

Neuromuscular junctions, also called motor neuron and Sarcolemma of the muscle fiber, are specialized chemical synapses formed at the sites where the terminal branches of the axon of a motor neuron contact a target muscle cell.

The sarcolemma connects the basement membrane which surrounds all connective tissues, or to other muscle cells, creating a very strong fiber that can contract together.

Hence, the correct option is (B).

  • Question 7
    4 / -1

An antigen is a substance that causes the immune system to produce antibodies against itself. Which type of cells are known to be involved in the initial presentation of antigen to T lymphocytes?

    Solution

Dendritic cells are known as the most efficient antigen-presenting cell type with the ability to interact with T cells and initiate an immune response.  Dendritic cells are receiving increasing scientific and clinical interest due to their key role in the immune response and potential use with tumor vaccines.

Hence, the correct option is (A).

    Match the following:

    1. Phylogenetic classification a. Based on chemical constituents
    2. Numerical taxonomy b. Based on evolutionary relation
3 Cytotaxonomy c. Based on all observable characteristics
    Solution
    1. Phylogenetic classification b. Based on evolutionary relation
    2. Numerical taxonomy c. Based on all observable characteristics
    3. Cytotaxonomy a. Based on chemical constituents

Hence, the correct option is (B).

  • Question 9

    Anatomically, jute fibres are ____________________.

    Solution

Anatomically jute fibers are secondary bast/ phloem fibres. In perennial woody trees, the central portion of the stem is darker in colour: Further, it is hard and tough due to deposition of resins, tannins, gums and formation of tyloses. This central hard tough, and darker region constitutes heartwood or duramen. The conduction function of heart wood stops due to formation of tyloses in vessels and hence heartwood is mechanical in fundtiori but does not function in water conduction. The outer or peripheral portion of the trunk is lighter incolour and soft which performs the functions of conduction of water and minerals and it is known as sap wood or albumum.

Hence, the correct option is (B).
