CBSE will Regulate Admissions in class 9th & 11th from 2020

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to regulate the whole process of admission to classes 9 and 11 in all its affiliated schools across the country from next year.

Board has formulated the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to standardise admissions in these classes which are currently conducted by schools on the basis of their own rules.

CBSE has informed all its schools to follow the guidelines mentioned in the SOPs, while conducting admissions to classes 9 and 11. A strict action will be taken against those found violating the board’s instructions.

General rules for accepting admissions to CBSE class 9 and 12

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been formulated for admissions in these classes

For admission to these two classes, CBSE has defined 11 categories some of which are as below:

• Transfer of parents
• Shifting of family
• Shifting of hostel
• Re-admission in other school after failing in class 9 or class 12
• For better education
• Due to distance concerns
• Due to medical condition
• To change the education board

Board has also put some enhanced conditions under these categories. For example, if a student wants to take admission in any of classes 9 and 11 in another school affiliated to CBSE for better education facilities then his/her parents will be required to submit the application along with the last five years’ result stats of both the schools, one in which their ward is currently studying and the one in which they seek admission. Qualification and teaching experience of the staff members of both the schools will also have to be submitted at the same time.

Reaction of educators and teachers on CBSE’s admission clauses

Most of the teachers and principals have come with a complete criticism for board’s idea of regulating school admissions. They have a view that no education board should intervene in the admission policy.

In addition to this, they criticised the concept of evaluating the quality of teachers of a school through its results. A principle of a CBSE school said, “Results cannot represent or measure the learning outcomes of students or schools.”

Why did CBSE decide to regulate the admissions to classes 9 and 11?

According to Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE’s controller examinations, this whole idea of regulating the school admission by SOPs was taken to streamline the process so that only genuine candidates get admission. This will ultimately improve the standards of education and help achieve better results in board examinations.
