CBSE will introduce two levels—Standard and Advanced—for Science and Social Science in Class 9 from 2026. This decision, approved by the board’s governing body, follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to media reports, this system was proposed by the curriculum committee of CBSE, which has now been approved. It will begin in Class 9 from 2026 and will be implemented in Class 10 board exams from 2028.

For the 2028 Class 10 board exams, CBSE is considering two options: a single question paper with extra questions for the Advanced level or separate papers for each level. This will allow students to choose based on their abilities.

NEP 2020 recommends offering subjects at different difficulty levels. Currently, CBSE provides Mathematics in two levels—Basic and Standard—where the syllabus remains the same, but the difficulty of questions varies.

Introducing two levels for Science and Social Science will benefit students preparing for entrance exams like JEE. Many students enroll in coaching classes because school education alone does not fully prepare them for these exams.

To support this change, CBSE has asked NCERT to create new textbooks that include extra content for the Advanced level. NCERT is already updating books based on the National Curriculum Framework 2023. The new Class 9 books are expected to be ready before the 2026-27 session.

Students will have to choose between Standard and Advanced levels in Class 9. CBSE is also considering allowing them to switch levels in Class 10. A pilot project is being conducted in 30 schools to test how students respond to this system.

This change aims to make learning more flexible and help students prepare better for higher studies and competitive exams.
