Maoist setback: On the anti-Naxalite operations this year

Security forces deliver major blows to the Maoists (माओवादी), but must avoid repression (दमन, उत्पीड़न)

With 159 Maoist cadres (कार्यकर्ता, प्रशिक्षित समूह) having been killed in anti-Naxalite operations led by security forces (सेनाएँ, बल) in 2024, the year so far (अब तक, इस बिंदु तक) has been one of major setbacks (झटका, बाधा) to the long-standing (दीर्घकालिक, पुराना), left-wing (वामपंथी, समाजवादी) extremist (उग्रवादी) movement (आंदोलन, अभियान) in India. After suffering major casualties in ambushes (घात, अचानक हमला) in April 2021 and April 2023, paramilitary (अर्धसैनिक) and police forces are coordinating better and firming up (मजबूत करना, सुदृढ़ करना) a no-holds-barred approach towards the militants (उग्रवादी, कट्टरपंथी). This has resulted in (परिणामस्वरूप, कारण बनना) the Maoists experiencing blow (shock, surprise; setback/misfortune) after blow in what is perhaps (possibly, feasibly, may be, it may/could be, very likely) their only remaining bastion (stronghold, bulwark; fortress, fort; support, protection, mainstay) — south Chhattisgarh — even though they retain a presence in other forested districts in Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra. The success in taking on the Maoists is also a consequence (result, effect, ramification, repercussion, reverberation) of the weakening base of support for the insurgents (rebel, rioter, subversive, guerrilla) as intelligence ((military/political) information, facts, details, particulars) is a vital component of the operations. This should not come as any surprise. Notwithstanding (nevertheless, nonetheless in spite of this/that, regardless of this/that, even so) grievances (complaint, protestation, protest, criticism, problem, objection) against the Indian state (government) among tribals in one of India’s most forested and under-developed regions, there were always going to be fewer takers (receiver, recipient) for the idea of a “protracted (lengthy, longish, extended, stretched, prolonged, elongated, long-drawn-out, never-ending, lingering, endless)” war as espoused (adapt (an idea or a belief or a cause); embrace, accept, support, back, welcome, take up, promote, favour, defend) by the Maoists. The insurgency (uprising, revolt, rebellion) and the counter-operations have taken a huge toll on the tribal population, bringing in more fatigue (tiredness, exhaustion, overtiredness, weariness) for them. That most of the dead among the Maoist cadres are tribal youth points to the tragedy that has befallen ((of something bad) happen, occur, take place/appear, fall upon, hit, strike) one of India’s poorest States.

The no-holds barred (without rules or restrictions (i.e. engage in a conflict/dispute without any rules/restrictions)) approach of what the Chhattisgarh government calls “Operation Prahar (Launched in 2017, ‘Operation Prahar’ is a collaborative mission of the CRPF and Chattisgarh Police against the threats posed by the Naxalites)” might have succeeded in eliminating scores of (a lot of something; several, various, many, countless, numerous, innumerable) Maoist cadres, effected (cause, cause to happen, bring about, produce) surrenders and arrests, but it has also targeted peaceful activists (a person who supports a political change or cause; (or societal change/cause)) fighting for tribal rights. Civil society organisations have complained that the attacks on the Maoists have coincided with repression against activists and tribals. Chhattisgarh and the Union Home Ministry must be mindful (conscious of, aware of, alert to, careful of, wary of, sensible of) of these grievances as such actions could also increase disenchantment (disappointment, dissatisfaction, discontent) and play into the hands of the Maoists. That streams (series, succession, spate) of the Maoist/Naxalite current (trend, tendency, movement) have lasted (continue, carry on, keep going, remain, persist, stay) for more than five decades (a period of ten years) shows that left extremism is still resilient ((of a person) able to recover quickly from difficulties/problems, quick to bounce back; adaptable, flexible; strong, sturdy) in regions where governance (the act of governing something; administration) by the Indian state is either absent or seen as detrimental to the marginalised (the people who are treated as insignificant, treated as unimportant, neglected) sections (a particular group within a larger body of people). Yet, despite its resilience (the ability to bounce back quickly from difficulties; strength of character, strength, toughness), the Maoist movement — as experiences (encounter or undergo, go through, be subjected to, be faced with) of similar currents across the world show — remains an anachronistic (antiquated, archaic, antique, ancient; outdated, out of date, outmoded, old-fashioned) one. Far from (not, not at all; nowhere near, a long way from) reaching any of its lofty (tall, very high, giant, imposing, magnificent) goals, the Indian Maoist movement has only brought misery (pain, distress, suffering) for those whom the insurgents claim to fight for. The earlier they realise the futility (uselessness, pointlessness, vanity) of their ideology and work towards using spaces in the Indian democratic system to articulate (express, voice, communicate, convey, talk of, mention) concerns (anxiety, worry, issue, distress), the better it would be for the tribals who are caught in this never-ending (non-stop, continuing, unending, unceasing, perpetual) crossfire between security forces and the Maoists.
