Presidential reprieve: On U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the road ahead
Despite the discharge (रिहाई, दोषमुक्ति), the U.S. will have to deal with a polarised (ध्रुवीकृत) Trump era (युग, काल)
President-elect Donald Trump was handed (give, present) an “unconditional discharge” in a felony (गंभीर अपराध) case in New York, where he was earlier found guilty on 34 counts (a separate charge in an indictment) of falsifying business records to make $1,30,000 in hush-money (payment, payout, reward (given to someone to keep the information secret)) payments to an adult films star over an alleged (कथित, आरोपित) affair (relationship, relations, entanglement, involvement, attachment). Following his conviction (दोषसिद्धि, सजा) last May, one of four criminal indictments (अभियोग) that he faced at the time, Mr. Trump went on to win the November 2024 election and will be sworn into office on January 20. In accordance with (के अनुसार, के तहत) the legal immunity (exemption from punishment, freedom from punishment, impunity, indemnity, non-liability) for official acts that is offered to the office of the President of the U.S., a position affirmed (state clearly, pronounce publicly, assert) recently by the Supreme Court, three indictments that had not yet reached the stage of a conviction or acquittal were either dismissed (खारिज करना, अस्वीकार करना) or came to a halt owing to procedural complexities. His indictment for his role in instigating (उकसाना, प्रेरित करना) a mob (भीड़) attack on the U.S. Capitol (In the United States, the Capitol is a building in Washington in which the US Congress meets) in January 2021 and his indictment for mishandling (दुरुपयोग करना) classified (वर्गीकृत) documents discovered at his home in Florida, after his 2020 election defeat, were withdrawn by then Special Counsel (lawyer, legal practitioner, legal adviser, legal executive, advocate, barrister, attorney, solicitor) Jack Smith because the Department of Justice “forbids (ban, prohibit, bar, prevent) the federal ((in the US) relating to the system of government (both a national government and governments of the 50 states) as defined in the Constitution which is based on the separation of powers among three branches: the executive, the legislative and the judicial branch. (There are two types of juries serving different functions in the federal trial courts: trial juries, also known as petit juries, and grand juries)) indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution (legal action, legal proceeding, legal case) of a sitting (existing, current, present, continuing) President”. A state-level case in Georgia relating to allegations (accusation, charge, indictment) of tampering with the 2020 election’s vote-counting process was paused pending a decision by an appeals court. In the New York case, following his appeal to delay the sentencing (conviction, judgement, verdict), the Supreme Court ruled that sentencing could proceed after the judge, Juan Merchan, said that he would hand down (give, declare, announce (a verdict/judgement)) an unconditional discharge — implying (indicate, signify, point to, suggest) no jail time, monetary fine, or probation — given (considering, taking into account, bearing in mind) that this would be “the most viable (workable, feasible, practicable, possible, reasonable) solution” in such unprecedented (not done or experienced before) circumstances.
Other than facing the routine conditions of a ban on convicted (sentenced, punished; found guilty, declared guilty) felons (a person who has committed a felony (serious crime)) owning guns and being required to provide the State of New York criminal database with a DNA sample, Mr. Trump has emerged unscathed (unhurt, undamaged, unharmed) from the legal quagmire (unfortunate situation, muddle, mix-up) prior to his 2024 victory. The deeper questions that America will wrestle with (grapple, fight, struggle/battle), however, transcend (go beyond, cut across; exceed, surpass, outdo, outshine, eclipse) these legal minutiae (details, niceties/finer points, particulars) — they relate to the fact that (used to refer to a specific situation under consideration/discussion) Mr. Trump, his 2024 campaign (canvassing, electioneering, an act of soliciting (asking for/requesting) votes; an organized effort that seeks to influence the decision-making progress within a specific group), and the MAGA movement more broadly, remain polarising and there is near-complete breakdown (failure, collapse) of bipartisanship (a political situation that occurs when two opposing parties work together to achieve common goals) within political circles as applicable to critical issues of social and economic policy, including the economy and jobs, reproductive rights (Reproductive rights rest on the recognition of the basic right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so, and the right to attain the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health), the criminal justice system and immigration (the act of leaving one’s countries and moving to another country of which they are not natives, nor citizens, to settle or reside there, especially as permanent residents or naturalized citizens) reform. Liberal (leftist, left-wing, progressive, Democrat) and progressive Americans must, understandably, be hoping, in the light of (taking into consideration, considering, taking into account, bearing in mind, keeping in mind, taking note of, in view of) his comprehensive ((of a victory) achieved by a very large margin; decisive, sweeping) victory leading to a federal government trifecta (a particular situation in which you have to deal with three important) things and achieve your purpose. (trifecta generally means a bet placed on a horse race in which the bettor must predict which horses will finish first, second, and third, in the exact order)), that Mr. Trump will strike a conciliatory note on Inauguration (swearing-in, introduction, admission, initiation, induction, appointment (of someone officially to a post/office)) Day, and follow that up with a more bipartisan (involving cooperation between two (opposite & big) political parties) approach to policymaking in the four years ahead. The cost (loss, suffering, drawback, disadvantage) of not doing so appears to be high indeed (in fact, actually, undeniably).
