Prime message: On India’s strong line and Pakistan
India must mobilise (संगठित करना, एकत्र करना) global opinion against Pakistan’s nuclear threats
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation on Monday night (May 12, 2025) and his visit to the Adampur base of the Indian Air Force in Punjab on the frontlines with Pakistan on Tuesday were reassuring (आश्वस्त) for the nation that has been in the midst of (के बीच में, के मध्य) a volatile (अस्थिर, परिवर्तनशील) conflict (संघर्ष, टकराव). Mr. Modi reiterated (दोहराना, पुनः कहना) India’s revised strategy (रणनीति) of responding to terrorism with clarity and resolve (दृढ़ संकल्प, इच्छाशक्ति). For one, India is no longer (अब और नहीं) willing to concede (स्वीकार करना, मान लेना) the fig leaf ((figuratively) something that is used to hide an embarrassing situation or problem; disguise, camouflage, cover-up, shield, facade, veneer) of an explanation often offered by Pakistan that terrorists were non-state actors (गैर-राज्य अभिनेता) acting independently of the state (राज्य, सरकार). Operation Sindoor is ongoing (जारी है, चल रहा), but it is also a continuation of this new strategic (रणनीतिक) approach which earlier manifested (indicate, show, reveal, exhibit, present, express, represent, display, demonstrate), less successfully, in the surgical strikes (the military attack aimed to cause damage on a particular target with small/no collateral damage to surroundings) of 2016 and Balakot airstrikes of 2019. India is willing to engage with (deal with, participate in, take part in, take part in, join in, become involved in, involve (a talk/discussion)) Pakistan diplomatically (tactfully, sensitively; in a way that involves ambassadors/diplomats between countries), but only on the central and relevant question of terrorism emanating (originate from, derive from, arise from, stem from, come from) from that country and the status of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Mr. Modi also made it clear that India would stay the course (continue doing something in spite of difficulties; to continue doing something till the end even though it is tough/challenging; work hard till the end to accomplish the task) on the decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. Though Mr. Modi did not directly join issue with (get into controversy or debate; to argue with one another over any issue) U.S. President Donald Trump on his claim (affirmation, assertion, contention, profession, declaration) that his administration (government, regime) brokered (settle, arrange, negotiate, pull off, mediate (an agreement)) the understanding (agreement, deal, settlement, treaty) between New Delhi and Islamabad, he was categorical (definitive, decisive, certain, clear-cut, conclusive, concrete, definite, unequivocal) in his assertion (affirmation, claim, contention, profession, declaration) that India would be guided entirely by its national interest (common concerns (in politics/business)) in deciding its future course of action (plan of action, procedure, process, approach, technique). Further moves (act, action, activity, step, measure) by India will depend on how Pakistan responds to the changed approach of India and the new realities.
Mr. Modi’s visit to Adampur, 100 km from the border and also a site of India’s Russian-made S-400 air defence system, disproved (deny, disprove, prove wrong, prove false, invalidate, negate, contradict, quash) Pakistan’s claim that the base was hit (strike (a target); damage, ruin, affect badly) during the recent military face off (fight, conflict, clash, encounter, confrontation). That said (regardless of what has just been told; nevertheless), there is a need to insulate (save, protect, safeguard, defend, guard, secure, shield) strategy from populist (relating to the politicians who claim that they are representing the common/ordinary people) sloganeering and prime-time TRP (TRP can stand for Television Rating Point or Target Rating Point; It shows what percentage of a programme’s target audience viewed it. It is the metric used by the marketing and advertising agencies to evaluate this viewership) wars. India’s stakes ((high-risk) competition, contest, battle, challenge) are high, and they must not be held hostage (a person captured or held as security for the fulfilment of certain conditions/terms) by the designs (plan, intention, target, purpose) of Pakistan’s terrorists, which are of course (certainly, definitely, absolutely, by all means) unacceptable. Quiet diplomacy (it is a way of conduct of international relations (through the interaction of official representatives of governments or groups) to create conditions in which parties feel comfortable to act, in particular allowing parties calmly to evaluate positions and interests, to weigh options and consider independent and impartial advice) and covert (confidential, secret, unrevealed, undisclosed, hidden; underground, undercover, surreptitious, stealthy, conspiratorial) operations may not be suitable for TRP media wars but can be extremely useful in the pursuit of (in order to achieve (something); aspiration for, quest for, search for) the country’s strategic interests. While India should not be unsettled (worried, troubled, anxious, nervous, tense, edgy, upset, shaky) by Pakistan’s nuclear sabre-rattling (the display of military force; aggressive/belligerent, warmongering), it is also time India took the lead with other partner countries to start a new global conversation on the risks of nuclear weapons. The dangers of a nuclear conflict are far too (excessively, inordinately, wildly, much too, way too; extremely, seriously, severely hugely) serious to be ignored, and discussions within India and the world should be cognisant (aware, well informed about, familiar with) of that. While India’s position against third-party interference (intervention, involvement, meddling, intrusion) in India-Pakistan relations is a historically established position (status, stance, policy, point of view, standpoint, attitude, perspective, approach), it must also build global opinion against Pakistan’s strategy of terrorism and nuclear blackmail (intimidation, threat, compulsion, coercion).
