Season of bluster: On Trump, Putin and Ukraine

Trump is finding it difficult to negotiate (बातचीत करना, मोल-भाव करना) with Putin on Ukraine

After more than two months of caustic (bitter, sharp, sarcastic, cutting, biting, scathing) words for Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and approbation (प्रशंसा, अनुमोदन) for Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to strike a different note in his approach towards bringing the two leaders to the negotiating table. Following a call with Mr. Putin, Mr. Trump said that he was “very angry” with the former when, following weeks of attempted negotiations (discussion, discourse, debate, dialogue, deliberation, talks, parley), Mr. Putin reportedly (कथित रूप से) attacked Mr. Zelenskyy’s credibility (विश्वसनीयता, भरोसा) instead of discussing steps towards finding peace. Further, Mr. Trump, apparently (जाहिर तौर पर, स्पष्ट रूप से) irate (क्रोधित, नाराज़) that his campaign (अभियान, प्रचार) promise to end the conflict (संघर्ष, टकराव) was losing steam and in danger of remaining unfulfilled, threatened to slap (to impose (a penalty, tariff, tax, fine, or restriction) suddenly or forcefully) nations purchasing Russian oil with a 50% tariff, unless Mr. Putin agreed to a ceasefire (युद्धविराम, संघर्ष विराम) in the near term. The choke point (a point of blockage; a point of congestion) was Mr. Putin’s insistence (आग्रह, ज़िद) that Mr. Zelenskyy lacks (अभाव होना, कमी होना) the legitimate (वैध, कानूनी) authority to sign a robust (मजबूत, सशक्त) peace deal that would not be challenged (चुनौती देना, विरोध करना) by any nation; and that in this context (circumstances, conditions, factors, state of affairs, situation, background) the introduction of “temporary governance (the act of governing something; government, administration, regime) in Ukraine,” was required, perhaps (maybe, possibly) achieved through “democratic elections, to bring to power a viable (reasonable, practical, logical, sensible, effective) government that enjoys the trust of the people…”

In terms of (with regard to, regarding, concerning, as to, in respect of) his popularity back home (in one’s own country rather than in a foreign country; in one’s hometown rather than elsewhere), Mr. Zelenskyy had earlier corrected a broadside (a strong written or spoken attack (on someone/something); criticism, censure, verbal attack, denunciation, castigation, tongue-lashing, rebuke, tirade, flak, brickbat) from Mr. Trump, a false claim (assertion, statement, declaration, affirmation, contention, allegation) that he only had an approval rating (a measure of people’s approval of a political leader) of 4%, when in fact (actually, really, indeed, undeniably, as a matter of fact) Kiev had noted that 65% of Ukrainians trusted their President and his approval rating hovered around 57% in early 2025. Mr. Putin’s claims in this regard (in connection with the aspect/consideration/point referred to earlier; concerning this point, in connection with this aspect), which range from the unfounded (groundless, baseless, unproven, unsupported, speculative, misinformed) statements about Mr. Zelenskyy lacking popular (widespread, general, prevalent, prevailing; accepted/established) legitimacy (lawfulness, legality; justification, validity) to accusing him, a leader of Jewish descent (ancestry, origin, succession, parentage, lineage, heredity), of enabling Nazi forces (troops, armed forces, soldiers) in Ukraine, can be understood in the backdrop (situation, scenario, context) of Moscow’s reluctance (unwillingness, disinclination, hesitation, vacillation, lack of enthusiasm) to enter into a peace treaty (agreement, accord, pact, compact, protocol) at a time when its troops have continued to keep up (continue, maintain, persist, carry on/go on with) the military pressure on Ukrainian forces and have made substantial (considerable, large, sizeable, significant, important) territorial gains there. The greater concern for Europe, and perhaps the U.S., might be that Mr. Putin could seek (try, aim, attempt.13 updates available) to undermine (to weaken something gradually or secretly, making it less effective or successful; weaken, erode, subvert, sabotage) via influence operations any plan for free and fair elections in Ukraine and thus succeed in getting a pro-Russian candidate installed (induct, instate, appoint, admit to office) in Kiev (the capital of Ukraine). In turn (as a result of something in a series of events; successively, sequentially, in succession), Mr. Trump, even if he is not particularly concerned with European security in a post-conflict scenario (circumstance, condition, situation, background, backdrop) in Ukraine that might favour (support, back, endorse, advocate, espouse) Russian interests (common concerns (in politics/business)), may worry that a lucrative (remunerative, profitable, profitable, rewarding, gainful, successful) U.S.-Ukraine mineral extraction deal might be in jeopardy (peril, danger, risk, difficulty) if Mr. Putin is de facto (actual, existing, effective, real, established, recognized) calling the shots across the region. Regardless of (without being affected/influenced by; despite, notwithstanding, in spite of) the bluster (धमकी) on all sides, an early ceasefire would have the greatest impact on prospects (chances, possibilities, expectations, opportunities (for success)) for lasting (enduring, long-lasting, permanent, persistent) peace after more than three years of bloodshed (killing, massacre, carnage, slaughter, murder) and dislocation (disruption, disturbance, disorder, turmoil, upheaval).
