Short circuit: On India’s tour of the West Indies
India dominated the longer formats against the West Indies, but lost the T20Is
Dominance (प्रभुत्व, वर्चस्व) in Tests and ODIs and diffidence (self-doubt, apprehension, uncertainty, hesitancy, nervousness, insecurity, uneasiness, embarrassment) in T20Is defined India’s performance during the latest tour of the West Indies. The Test series was claimed (दावा करना) at 2-0, the ODI jousts ((in sports) contest, tournament) at 2-1 while the T20I series was lost at 2-3. Against an opposition that has been on a downward spiral (rise or fall of something; upward spiral - growth, rise, enlargement, expansion (or) downward spiral- deterioration, decline, degradation) for a while (a (short) period of time), India was expected to romp home (easily win (a contest/competition) without much effort) across all three formats. However, given (दिया गया) the way the tour shaped up, even if (भले ही) status quo (यथास्थिति) was largely (काफी हद तक, मुख्य रूप से) maintained in Tests and ODIs, the T20Is threw up a lot of questions. That the conventional (पारंपरिक, मानक) 50-over World Cup will be held in India across October and November while the West Indies and the United States will host the ICC T20 World Cup next year, meant that the Indian unit had to have both an immediate focus and equally a long-term vision. Yet, the signals emanating from the Caribbean proved to be mixed. Coach Rahul Dravid, a former star with impeccable (flawless, faultless, unblemished, spotless, perfect, picture-perfect, exemplary, ideal, model) credentials (identities, qualities; achievement, experience, knowledge) and enormous (विशाल, बड़ा) stature, seems to have an immunity (प्रतिरोधक शक्ति) when it comes to the perception-game (धारणा-खेल) which somehow eluded ((of something wanted/desired) fail to be achieved/attained by someone) his predecessor (पूर्ववर्ती, पूर्वज) Ravi Shastri even when the results under the latter were far superior (कहीं बेहतर). If this year’s World Cup is the focus then the inexplicable (अकथनीय) resting of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the second and third ODIs, seemed baffling (आश्चर्यजनक, भ्रमित करने वाला).
In the subsequent (following, ensuing, successive) T20Is, the squad (team, outfit, group) under captain Hardik Pandya performed in a lukewarm (unenthusiastic, unresponsive, half-hearted, indifferent, dispassionate, tepid) fashion (manner, method, way). The first two games were lost before India pulled back in the third and fourth while in the climactic (चरम, अंतिम) fifth clash (match) in Florida, the West Indies prevailed (win, triumph, be victorious, succeed, conquer). The men from the Caribbean may seem dull in Tests and ODIs but in T20Is they are high on (enthusiastic about; very interested in; very impressed by) confidence. With many of its players having gained exposure (experience, acquaintance, awareness, familiarity) from the various T20 leagues, plus with the history of having won the ICC T20 title in 2012 and 2016, the West Indies are placed better in cricket’s shortest format. India may take heart (to feel encouraged; be optimistic; be hopeful, to gain courage, to gain confidence) from the results in the Tests and ODIs while in the T20Is, more work needs to be done. Four key players — Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and K.L. Rahul — missing in the ranks (the people belonging to a group) due to fitness issues, did affect the composition (formation, arrangement, constitution) of India’s various outfits (team, squad, group). Bumrah is now back in the mix ahead of the Ireland tour but queries remain about who would constitute (form, comprise, compose, represent, make up) India’s core group in the World Cup. Tilak Varma’s runs in T20Is augur well (bode, indicate, portend, signal (a good/bad outcome)) but as the Indians return home, a sense of ambiguity (inexactness, doubtfulness, obscurity/opacity) lingers (continue, carry on, go on, stay, remain, persist, last) from their Caribbean sojourn (stay, visit; journey).
