Trump season: On the 2024 U.S. Presidential election
The former president is leading, but the election is still months away
As the Republican National Convention (सम्मेलन, सभा) drew to a close in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it became obvious that the Party’s expected nominee (उम्मीदवार) for the 2024 U.S. presidential election in November, former President Donald Trump, is not only capitalising on (लाभ उठाना, फायदा उठाना) the popularity boost that he has inevitably (अनिवार्य रूप से) benefited from since surviving an assassination (हत्या) attempt a week earlier, but has now established (स्थापित करना) total control of the Republican Party and is in a strong position to take on (compete against, oppose, challenge, confront, fight, stand up to) incumbent (current, existing, present (holder, bearer or occupant of an office)) President Joe Biden in that regard (उस संदर्भ में, उस मामले में). The Convention itself marked (चिह्नित करना) several firsts — not only was Mr. Trump’s speech the first major public remarks he delivered since the assassin’s (हत्यारा) bullet injured his ear but otherwise left him unscathed (सुरक्षित), but the Convention itself was held for the first time in person ((of an activity or event) happening with people physically present together in the same place, not virtually (by using computer technology over the internet)) since the COVID-19 pandemic (महामारी) resulted in (cause, lead to, bring about, give rise to) the cancellation of all public political events in 2020. It would also appear that Republican strategists (रणनीतिकार) have deepened (गहरा करना) their appreciation of optics as far as (जहां तक) Mr. Trump’s appeal (attraction, interest, charisma, fascination) among the electorate (all the people who entitled to vote in an election) goes. There was a distinct (स्पष्ट, विशिष्ट) attempt to project (present, put across, communicate, promote) the political power of women at the event, almost as if (like as it would be if) to soften (decrease, reduce, lessen, moderate) the former president’s image (public perception, persona), which was in years past battered (damage, spoil, impair/ruin; smash, hit/strike repeatedly) by revelations (disclosure, utterance, announcement, report, news) of his unflattering (unattractive, unfavourable, harsh, critical, attacking, disapproving) remarks about women. Mr. Trump’s wife Melania made a rare appearance at the event, as did his 17-year-old granddaughter Kai, his daughter-in-law and co-chair (a person who chairs something (party/meeting & etc) jointly with another) of the Republican ((in the US) a member or supporter of the Republican Party (also referred to as the GOP); conservative, right winger. Grand Old Party (GOP) refers to the Republican Party) National Committee, Lara, Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders, Mr. Trump’s former Press Secretary, and Indian American Usha Chilukuri Vance, who is the wife of Mr. Trump’s running mate (the person who runs with someone in an election (such as an election to choose a new president) and who is given the less important position (such as vice president) if they are elected), J.D. Vance.
There is much to analyse in Mr. Trump picking the 39-year-old Mr. Vance for Vice Presidential candidate in the upcoming race. Mr. Trump is evidently (obviously, clearly, visibly, markedly, distinctly, manifestly; apparently, supposedly, seemingly, reportedly, presumably, ostensibly) keen (eager, desirous, wishing, determined; interested in, passionate about, fond of) to win over younger demographic cohorts (group of people (within a particular category/classification)) in this election; he is also aligned (give support to; to agree with) to white, male America, and what it stands for in the country’s fraught (worried, troubled, stressful, overwrought, distressed, agitated, distracted, frantic, desperate, distraught (and with many problems)) politics today. There is also a geographic message in the subtext (implicit/indirect meaning; hidden agenda; (underlying) connotation, association, hint, implication; undertone) — as the junior Senator (a member of the Senate (the upper house or chamber in some bicameral legislative systems. (for example in the US, Australia, Canada)) from Ohio, Mr. Vance could also become a critical interlocutor (a person who takes part in a dialogue or conversation) for the Trump campaign’s (canvassing, electioneering, an act of soliciting (asking for/requesting) votes; an organized effort that seeks to influence the decision-making progress within a specific group) engagement with the all-important Rust Belt (it is a term used to describe areas (north east, mid west & Great Lakes regions) in the US. This term is used to describe these areas where there was an economic decline, urban decay, high rates of poverty, and a drop in population due to deindustrialization during 1970s &1980s) states — swing states of the mid-western U.S. that can potentially (likely, possibly, conceivably, perhaps, may be) make or break (to make (someone or something) a success or a failure) a presidential candidate. While there is no denying (used to say that something is undoubtedly true) Mr. Trump’s overall strong position and lead in swing states according to several national polls, three months is a long time in politics, and that certainly (obviously, unquestionably, undoubtedly, beyond doubt) applies to the U.S.
