Trumpeting claims: On the U.S. President’s claims, India and Pakistan

Donald Trump’s exaggerated claims undermine (कमजोर करना) India’s Kashmir policy

For the fifth time in as many days the U.S. President has claimed (दावा) credit (श्रेय, प्रशंसा) for bringing India and Pakistan back from “nuclear conflict (संघर्ष, टकराव)” by mediating the May 10 ceasefire (युद्धविराम, संघर्षविराम) agreement, a claim that is puzzling (भ्रमित करने वाला, हैरान करने वाला) and problematic. The claim of mediation (conciliation, reconciliation, arbitration, intervention/negotiation) has been rebutted (deny, disprove, prove wrong, prove false, invalidate, negate, contradict, quash) by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), unofficially and more formally several times, with officials (अधिकारी, प्रशासनिक अधिकारी) giving a timeline of how the talks (वार्ता, बातचीत) had been held “directly” between the Directors General of Military Operation (DGMO) on a hotline (a direct telephone line between two head quarters of government for emergency & or communication), after the Pakistani DGMO proposed a stop to hostilities (शत्रुता, लड़ाई) three days after Operation Sindoor began, and India acceded (सहमत होना, स्वीकार करना) to the request. The government has said that Pakistan’s request came after it received a jolt (झटका, सदमा) over India’s strikes (हमला) on Pakistani bases. It has also said that like many countries, the U.S. was engaged (deal with, participate in, take part in, take part in, join in, become involved in, involve (a talk/discussion)) with the situation, and officials including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser (the central co-ordinator and adviser to the prime minister/president and cabinet on security, intelligence, defence, and some foreign policy matters. They are based in the Cabinet Office and work across departments to bring together a coherent national security strategy that fits with the government’s priorities) Ajit Doval had kept them apprised (inform of, tell about, update on, brief, keep posted, give information about) of India’s position. Mr. Trump’s assertions (affirmation, claim, contention, profession, declaration), backed (support, approve of, endorse, second, promote, stand by) by his administration (government, regime), have been a cause (reason, grounds, basis) for obvious (clear, evident, apparent, noticeable, observable, visible) outrage in Delhi, as they violate (break, breach, contravene, overstep, disobey, defy, flout, fail to comply with, disregard, ignore) India’s “long-stated (relating to something that has been explicitly mentioned, declared, or agreed upon for a considerable period of time; long-standing, long-maintained)” principle of not accepting third-party mediation on bilateral (involving two groups or countries) issues. His other comments (remark, opinion, utterance, statement), including an offer (proposal, suggestion) to mediate (मध्यस्थता करना, सुलह कराना) to resolve the Kashmir dispute and the equivalence (equality, uniformity, sameness, levelness, evenness) he draws between India and Pakistan, also go against (resist, oppose, defy, deny; breach, break, transgress, contravene, violate) India’s previously well-respected policies against the internationalisation (the action/process of making something to become international) of an “internal issue” and the hyphenation (the act of joining two words using a hyphen; Connecting/Splitting a word (with hyphen) that would otherwise extend beyond the right margin (of a paragraph)) with Pakistan. Moreover (in addition to, besides, additionally), the MEA spokesperson has categorically (absolutely, directly, clearly, obviously, explicitly, definitely, conclusively, unquestionably, unconditionally, unequivocally, unambiguously, unqualifiedly, outright) denied that any trade-related issues were discussed between Indian and U.S. interlocutors (a person who takes part in a dialogue or conversation), even as Mr. Trump has repeated that he had prevailed (convince, satisfy, win over, persuade, influence, attract, get round) on India and Pakistan to put aside (shelve, put off, defer, abandon, reject, dismiss, postpone, renounce, cast aside; set aside, earmark, reserve/preserve, withhold) their “nuclear missile (a self-propelled/rocket-propelled weapon designed to deliver a conventional/nuclear explosive warhead with great accuracy at high speed; projectile)” by threatening to stop trade with them if they did not, and promising to enhance trade ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) if they did. That Mr. Trump has not once referred to India’s core concerns on terrorism, appeared to swallow (believe, trust, accept (a lie)) the Pakistani narrative (a representation of a particular situation; portrayal, account, description, statement) on a “nuclear war”, and even suggested (propose, put forward, recommend, recommend, advocate, advise) a “dinner” between Mr. Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, trivialises (make something seem unimportant or insignificant; underestimate, belittle) the serious nature of the rupture (quarrel, rift, break-up, feud, division, separation, split) between Delhi and Islamabad.

New Delhi must also analyse what lies behind Mr. Trump’s obvious shift (change) from the camaraderie (fellowship, closeness, solidarity, togetherness, mutual support) on display with Mr. Modi just months ago. Are the comments explained as simply “Trump being Trump”, or is he sending a more considered (planned, reasoned, studied, calculated, deliberate, sober, premeditated, well-thought-out) message on U.S. policy for the region? The extent (degree, level, size, range, magnitude) of the China-Pakistan political and military cooperation may also have caused some alarm (fear, anxiety, panic, shock, fright, nervousness, apprehension) in the U.S. India must make it clear that its battle against cross-border (across a border between two states/countries) terrorism from Pakistan cannot be brushed aside by any country, especially if it is one of India’s closest partners, and co-founder of the Quad (The ‘Quadrilateral’ is described as four democracies (the United States, Japan, Australia and India) with a shared objective to ensure and support a “free, open and prosperous” Indo-Pacific region). The U.S. President’s statements have not just challenged India’s narrative or policy principles but also questioned New Delhi’s credibility (integrity, character, reputation, standing, status), and some tough messaging will be required to clear the air (resolve any problems, disagreements, negative feelings or tensions through open and honest conversation/communication; to do something to end an argument or bad/tense situation; restore harmony, make peace, reconcile differences) convincingly (conclusively, completely, definitely, decisively) on the issue.
