A call for chaos: On Donald Trump’s Gaza Strip proposal
The United States should push for (ज़ोर देना, बार-बार प्रयास करना) a two-state solution, not displace (विस्थापित करना, निष्कासित करना) an entire people
When the state (राज्य, देश) of Israel was created in Palestine in 1948, more than 7,00,000 Palestinians, the land’s original inhabitants (निवासी, आबादी), were displaced. Palestinians remember this forced mass expulsion (निष्कासन, निर्वासन) as the Nakba (catastrophe). More Palestinians were expelled (banish, exile, evict, deport, oust, extradite) during the Six-Day War in 1967. Some moved to Gaza, others to the West Bank (It is a large amount of land located on the west bank of the River Jordan and bounded by Israel to the north, west, & south and by Jordan to its east. The West Bank has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war. It’s home to nearly three million Palestinians, and would make up the heart of any Palestinian state), while the majority fled to other countries, where they and their descendants (वंशज, उत्तराधिकारी) are refugees (शरणार्थी, विस्थापित व्यक्ति). In successive (लगातार, क्रमिक, निरंतर) peace talks (वार्ता, चर्चा), Israel has outrightly (स्पष्ट रूप से, पूरी तरह से) rejected their right to return to their homes, a fundamental right (मौलिक अधिकार, बुनियादी अधिकार). Now, U.S. President Donald Trump wants to forcibly transfer the 2.3 million Palestinians out of Gaza, the Mediterranean enclave (परिक्षेत्र, संलग्न क्षेत्र) that has suffered (experience, be subjected to, endure, live through, go through) relentless (continual, constant, continuous, unrelenting, unabating, sustained, unceasing, steady) Israeli bombardment (बमबारी, गोलाबारी) for 15 months. His plan involves relocating Palestinians to neighbouring (adjacent, adjoining, bordering, abutting) Arab countries, taking over the 360 sq. km strip (a long piece of land, stripe, swathe) which he calls (पुकारना) a “hellhole (a dirty and unpleasant place; an evil place; a place of extreme misery)” and redeveloping it into the Riviera (a coastal region (famous for its beautiful beaches)) of the Middle East. At a press conference in Washington DC, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he also stated sending troops to Gaza “if necessary”. The White House later claimed (state, maintain, assert, affirm) that he meant a temporary relocation of Palestinians. It also clarified that he had not committed to deploying (employ/bring into effective action; bring into service; have recourse to; use, utilize, employ, make use of, take advantage of) U.S. troops (forces; armed forces, soldiers) but reaffirmed (state something again strongly) that his “out-of-the-box (unconventional, out of the ordinary, unusual; creative, innovative)” proposal for Gaza was a serious one. However, Mr. Trump’s plan has at least three fundamental problems.
First, Palestinians are not an imperial (authoritarian, authoritative, tyrannical, high-handed, domineering, overbearing) possession (control, ownership) that Israel and the U.S. can bomb (attack, blow up, pound, bombard, shell) and relocate at will (as one wishes, at one’s pleasure/desire, at one’s want/choice). They are a people with a national identity (a social category, a set of persons marked by a label and distinguished by rules deciding membership and (alleged) characteristic features or attributes; individuality, character, originality), whose collective history, present and future, is deeply (profoundly, strongly, intensely, very much, completely, greatly) tied to the Palestinian land. Despite relentless Israeli bombardment, the Palestinians of Gaza have refused to leave. Now, Mr. Trump is advocating (support, back, promote, favour, endorse, uphold, champion, subscribe to) what is essentially a call for ethnic cleansing (the mass expulsion or killing of ethnic group members in a place by another one, particularly a majoritarian group in that place; carnage, mass murder, mass killing), another Nakba. Second, Arab countries, including many of America’s allies, have unequivocally (absolutely, directly, clearly, unambiguously, conclusively, unconditionally, explicitly, unqualifiedly, categorically, outright) rejected Mr. Trump’s proposal. They understand that Palestinians who were forcefully removed never managed to return. Even authoritarian (oppressive, draconian, undemocratic, dictatorial, totalitarian) Arab rulers, regardless of their dependence (reliance) on U.S. aid (help, assistance, support), must pay attention to (heed, pay heed to, take notice of, take into account, concentrate, be careful, be attentive, be heedful) the sentiments (feeling, emotion, point of view) of their people, who overwhelmingly (with a great majority; to a very great degree) support Palestinian rights. Third, Mr. Trump’s vision (plan, pipe dream, mental image/picture) of rebuilding Gaza aligns (give support to) closely with the Israeli far-right’s (relating to the extreme right-wing of a political party or group; extremely conservative, rightist) agenda: resettling the land with Jewish settlers (colonist, immigrant, habitant). This will further alienate (set apart, isolate, distance, detach, separate, disunite; estrange, make hostile/make unfriendly) an already desperate (hopeless, despairing, anguished, distressed, disheartened, devastated) population and plant (place secretly) yet another time bomb in West Asia. Mr. Trump must abandon his calls for the ethnic cleansing and instead use America’s influence (power, authority, sway, clout, leverage, weight, position, muscle) to ensure a successful ceasefire (a negotiated agreement that will be accompanied by other associated commitments to de-escalate the fighting; a temporary stoppage of a war, truce, armistice) in Gaza. The U.S. should be working toward a lasting (permanent, firm, stable, durable, long-term, long-lasting), just solution — one that acknowledges (accept, recognize, realize) Palestinian rights and upholds (confirm, endorse/approve, vindicate/validate) the principles of peace and stability in the region.
