A lot in a name: On INDIA and the BJP
Opposition parties are confronting the Bharatiya Janata Party on its own turf of nationalism (राष्ट्रवाद)
The acronym, INDIA or Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (गठबंधन, संधि), that 26 Opposition political parties devised (conceive, come up with, work out, form, develop, create) as the name for their joint platform (policy, plan of action, programme), signifies (mark, point to, denote, indicate, represent, symbolize, stand for) several attributes (quality, feature, characteristic, trait, element) of the collective (संगठन). It can be claimed (दावा करना, पुष्टि करना) as a sign of the determination (दृढ़ संकल्प, निर्धारण) to work towards a predetermined (पूर्वनिर्धारित, निश्चित) goal. It can also be found to be a laboured (अस्वाभाविक) and unsteady stretch (a difficult/demanding task) — of language and politics. In naming itself after the country, the alliance is trying to confront the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its turf (area/sphere of influence, area/sphere of activity; domain) of nationalism. It hopes the name will convey to voters what it wants to — that the BJP is antagonistic (विरोधी, शत्रुतापूर्ण) to an inclusive (broad-based, wide-ranging, comprehensive, all-inclusive, general) vision of India. The parties are united in their opposition to the BJP for both tactical and ideological (विचारधारा) reasons, and the sheer birth (जन्म, आरंभ) of INDIA has been found disturbing (परेशान) by the ruling party. These parties have been at the receiving end of a hostile (antagonistic, aggressive, confrontational, combative; bitter, vicious, spiteful) campaign (अभियान) by the BJP using state power (राज्य शक्ति). The Congress, by stating that it has no claim (दावा) for the post of Prime Minister in the event of a victory in the general election in 2024, has made it easier for the alliance to take shape (become clear, become definite, come together). The birth of INDIA marks (indicate, signify, represent) the best coordinated effort by the Opposition to challenge the dominance (प्रभुत्व, प्रभाव) of the BJP since 2014.
The Congress is the axis (central straight line/part) of INDIA, but several constituents (integral part, unit, segment, section) of the formation are in direct contest with the party in many regions. In West Bengal, Punjab and Kerala, constituents of INDIA continue to fight one another. The claim (assertion, affirmation, declaration, representation) of it being an alliance is unrealistic (impractical, non-viable, unworkable, unreasonable, illogical), for this and more reasons. The realisation (awareness, understanding, comprehension, recognition, discernment) among these parties that there is a larger political battle to fight is the strength of INDIA right now. Seat sharing among partners is going to be an extreme challenge, even as they swear (promise, vow, pledge, assure) by a shared (common, collective, joint) vision of a pluralistic (relating to a system in which people of diverse ethnic, racial, religious, or social groups coexist in harmony irrespective of their various differences) India. Several parties and leaders in the partnership face corruption investigations and trials, which make them vulnerable (weak, feeble, fragile; attackable, exposed, at risk, unsafe, ill-protected) to enticement (lure, allure, temptation, attraction, persuasion) and pressure from the BJP. There are already reports of bruised (upsetting, insulting, painful, distressing, affronting, hurtful) egos and shattered (damaged, collapsed, defeated, ruined, thrashed, demolished, devastated) ambitions among the leaders who had gathered in Bengaluru this week, but they have resolved to convene (meet, gather, assemble, come together) again in Mumbai. Many of these parties have a shifting (unpredictable, inconstant, changeable, volatile) approach towards the BJP and face a challenge of public credibility (trustworthiness, reliability, integrity). Though the BJP’s moral high ground (ethical or political parlance/expression/phrase, refers to the status of being respected for remaining moral, and adhering to and upholding a universally recognized standard of justice or goodness) has considerably (substantially, largely, significantly) eroded ((gradually) reduce, undermine, weaken, spoil, deteriorate, wear out) through its years in power, the party will continue to question its opponents (the opposition, rival, combatant, adversary) on the question of dynastic (relating to a dynasty (leaders who are all from the same family)) politics and corruption. While the case that the Opposition is building against the BJP is intrinsically (naturally, inherently, innately, essentially, basically, fundamentally) strong, there are barriers (obstacle, impediment, hindrance, problem, difficulty, disadvantage) to be overcome (deal with, solve, get over, conquer, overpower, prevail over) before it appeals (try to convince someone to do something by using a particular principle/quality; call on, invoke, plead with, lobby) to a large enough segment (integral part, unit, constituent, section) of the public to emerge victorious (triumphant, successful, winning).
