A tale of two: On alliance-building by BJP and Congress

The BJP and the Congress have taken contrasting (विषमता) approaches to building alliances (गठबंधन)

After raising its stakes (दांव) in the forthcoming (आगामी) general election by declaring a target of 400 seats along with allies, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is mopping up (an act of completing the military invasion/seizure of an area by capturing/killing remaining enemy troops) political partners across the country to resurrect (revive, reinvigorate, resuscitate, stimulate, rejuvenate) the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Just as the BJP is courting (woo, pursue, chase, try to obtain, try to win over, seek the hand/favour of, curry favour with) allies with alacrity (तत्परता), the putative (apparent, seeming, alleged, commonly regarded/considered) alliance of Opposition parties that appeared on the horizon (imminent, impending, approaching, coming, on the way, forthcoming, about to happen, in the wings, on the cards, in the pipeline/offing, just around the corner) in mid-2023 is unravelling (खंडित), if at all it ever took any concrete form (स्वरूप, संरचना). The BJP has announced a tie-up (alliance, coalition, association, link, connection, relationship) with Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party which had parted ways in 2018 over the issue of unfulfilled (incomplete, unfinished, neglected, not accomplished) promises for Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Naidu has slowly made his way back to the NDA by distancing himself from the Opposition. The BJP is assiduously (परिश्रम से) courting the Biju Janata Dal, to revive (पुनर्जीवित करना) their alliance formed between 1998-2009, in Odisha. The Akali Dal is waiting for the farmers’ agitation (आन्दोलन, उत्तेजना) to blow over (abate, subside, settle down, lessen, diminish, fade away, dwindle recede) before it could make its next move (कदम), potentially (संभावित) to march (go, proceed) back to the NDA camp. Efforts are on to bring the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam back into the NDA’s fold in Tamil Nadu. The most striking (noticeable, obvious, conspicuous, remarkable, prominent, evident, salient, visible, distinct, clear-cut, notable) of all the recent realignments (पुनर्निर्माण करना) has been that of Janata Dal (United) chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is now championing (support, advocate, back, uphold, promote) a third consecutive (लगातार) term for the BJP at the Centre, after calling for its defeat in the preceding (previous, prior, earlier) months.

A corresponding (coincident, concurrent, coinciding, simultaneous; equivalent, matching, similar, related, identical, comparable, commensurate, relative, correlative) disarray (disorder, confusion, chaos, disorganization, shambles) is evident (obvious, clear, apparent) in the Opposition camp, as parties and individual leaders are jumping on the BJP bandwagon (a popular activity/event that is currently become fashion). The emaciated (thin, weak, skinny, bony, shrunken) INDIA bloc also suffers from incoherence (the standard of being illogical, inconsistent, or unclear; disunity, disorganization, imbalance, confusion) with allies such as the Trinamool Congress which, after weeks of talks (dialogue, discussion, deliberation, consultation, parley, negotiation) with the Congress, announced candidates for all 42 seats of West Bengal, leaving nothing for the principal Opposition party. To add insult to injury (used to say when something makes a bad situation even worse; worsen, compound, exacerbate, aggravate), Mamata Banerjee has fielded (nominate, propose, put up (a candidate) to stand in an election) cricketer Yusuf Pathan from Baharampur against Congress state President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. In Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has unilaterally (used to indicate something done by a person/country without approval/agreement from other people/countries involved in the situation) announced some candidates, threatening the alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) and the Congress. In Kerala, the Left parties and the Congress, two key (crucial, critical, vital, important, significant) proponents (supporter, backer, promoter, protector) of national Opposition unity will be facing off. This usual paradox (mystery, absurdity; incongruity) is starker this time, as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and CPI leader Annie Raja are opponents in Wayanad. It is not a coincidence (coexistence, simultaneity, co-occurrence) that many of the leaders and parties that are taking positions convenient for the BJP, if not openly joining hands with it, are facing investigations by central agencies (the central agencies are organizations in the executive branch that co-ordinate the activities of, and provide guidance to the operating ministries and agencies; e.g. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Income Tax Department (IT) and etc). This role of the state (the government) in influencing (affect, have an effect on, exert influence on, determine) party politics in India is a disturbing (upsetting, discomfiting, disconcerting, unsettling, disquieting, troubling) sign for the health of Indian democracy, and also of the inglorious (shameful, dishonourable/discreditable, disgraceful, humiliating, shocking) records of the many Opposition leaders.
