Closer to closure: On the Savad arrest and Professor T.J. Joseph case in Kerala

Terror networks can be dismantled (विघटित करना) only by disabling those at their top

The long arm of the law finally caught up with Savad, a fugitive (भगोड़ा) in the notorious (कुख्यात) case of chopping off the palm (हथेली) of a college professor in Kerala’s Thodupuzha, 13 years after the crime. Sleuths (detective/investigator (NIA officer in this context)) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) (राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी) arrested him, the first accused, from a village in northern Kerala’s Kannur where he was living under a fake identity (पहचान), on January 10. The agency will rightly seek (request, ask for, demand) his custody (हिरासत) in order to unearth (पता लगाना) the latent (unexpressed, unrevealed, hidden, indiscernible, unrealized) network of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), which is believed to have planned the barbaric (cruel, savage, vicious, ruthless, brutal) assault (हमला) on the professor in July 2010 and arranged for Savad’s life in hiding thereafter. Religious extremists (चरमपंथी) targeted Professor T.J. Joseph on his way home from church for drafting (prepare) a question paper with supposedly (apparently, allegedly, evidently, seemingly, reportedly, presumably, ostensibly) a ‘blasphemous (निंदात्मक)reference (संदर्भ) to the Prophet (a person who is believed to be sent by God to Earth (to say the things that God wants to tell people)); actually, it was an adaptation (रूपांतरण, अनुकूलता) of a passage (extract, excerpt, quote, citation) from an essay on a screenplay written by noted (प्रसिद्ध, मशहूर) Malayalam film-maker P.T. Kunju Muhammad. The State was able to ensure that the incident did not spark (cause, bring about, lead to, prompt, give rise to, start) communal tensions (strained relations, strain, unease), but it set off (cause, lead to, give rise to, bring about, activate, prompt) a series of irreversible (irreparable, unrectifiable, unchangeable, irrecoverable, irretrievable) losses for the professor. With the Catholic church, which managed the college where he was teaching, turning its back on him, he was terminated (remove, dismiss, discharge, fire, sack) from service, with a recall (calling back, revocation) on the eve of (just prior to, the night/day before; the evening or day before some special event) his retirement made possible, ruefully (regretfully, sorrowfully), by the suicide of his disconsolate (sad, unhappy, dejected, dispirited, inconsolable, heartbroken) wife, as he recalls (remember, recollect) in his memoirs (autobiography, life story, recollections/experiences), A Thousand Cuts (2020).

The NIA took over the investigation in 2011. While it was able to get the conviction (sentence, judgement, pronouncement of guilt, verdict) of 19 of the accused (आरोपी) for various offences (crime, wrongdoing, illegal act, misdeed; breach, violation of the law) including those under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (an Indian law aimed at effective prevention of unlawful activities associations in India. Its main objective was to make powers available for dealing with activities directed against the integrity and sovereignty of India) in the two-phase trial (court case, judicial proceedings, legal action), the fact that (used to refer to a specific situation under consideration/discussion) the key accused remained at large ((of a criminal/accused) at liberty, free, on the run, fugitive, set loose, not confined) prevented its closure. The agency announced a bounty (favour, reward; generosity, largesse) of ₹10 lakh for information on Savad. His arrest has shifted the focus to the conspirators (conspirer, plotter/schemer, intriguer) who masterminded (plan, be in charge of, organize, coordinate, originate, initiate, create, work out) the assault and the underlings (underling, aide, subordinate, servant, henchman, sidekick, junior) who harboured (protect, shelter, shield, hide (a criminal)) him. Given (considering, taking into account, bearing in mind) that it was the outlawed (illegitimate, unlawful, wrongful, forbidden, illicit, unconstitutional, prohibited) Students Islamic Movement of India that metamorphosed (transform, change, transfigure, convert, alter, modify, remodel, reorganize, translate) into the National Development Front and subsequently (afterwards, later on, in due course) into the PFI, the key to averting (prevent, stop, avoid) its resurgence (recovery, revival, rebound, resurrection, renaissance, re-emergence) in another avatar (type) lies in uprooting (eradicate, eliminate, remove, get rid of, destroy) the entire network of its underground (secret, covert, undercover, surreptitious, stealthy, conspiratorial) supporters. Prof. Joseph has, as his words suggest, overcome any ill-will (hostility, hatred, enmity, dislike, aversion, antipathy) or feeling of vengeance (retaliation, revenge, tit for tat, counter-attack) towards his assailants (attacker, assaulter), but he rues (regret, be sorry about, lament) that action against the foot soldiers (the lowest level worker of an organization, group, etc) of religious terror would not guarantee peace and harmony (unity, solidarity, cooperation, agreement/concord) in society. For that to happen, their handlers (secret agent) should be brought to book. It is vital that the NIA stays the course and prosecutes (take to court, bring an action against, take legal action against, accuse, charge) the key accused. The terror network that plotted (plan, arrange organize, conceive, frame, think up (secretly)) the heinous (wicked, horrible, terrible, awful, disgraceful, shameful, outrageous, hateful, shocking) attack must be disabled entirely.
