Control, alter: On BJP top brass rejig
The Bharatiya Janata Party seeks (माँगना, कोशिश करना, प्रयास करना) a balance between a central command (आज्ञा, अधिकार, नियंत्रण) and regional leadership
The BJP has reconstituted its 11-member Parliamentary Board and the 15-member Central Election Committee this week and they are likely (संभावित, कदाचित, निःसंदेह) to remain in charge (कार्य प्रभारित, के शीर्ष पर, के नियंत्रण में) well into the 2024 general election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s grip (पकड़, नियंत्रण, शक्ति) over party matters is absolute (unlimited, unrestricted, unbounded, boundless, ultimate, total, supreme, unconditional) and the reconstitution of these apex bodies hardly (मुश्किल से, लगभग नहीं।) alters that fact. In that sense (उस अर्थ में), nothing fundamentally changes, and the changes reinforce (सुदृढ बनाना, मज़बूत करना) the trend of Mr. Modi’s expanding footprint (impression, effect, impact; the area taken control by someone/something) in the party’s remaking. Senior leader Nitin Gadkari, a former party president, and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan have lost their Parliamentary Board seats, while the new icon (famous person, big name) of the Hindutva camp, U.P. CM Yogi Adityanath, has not found a place. The former Karnataka CM, B.S. Yediyurappa, who holds sway (प्रभुत्व होना, शक्ति धारण करना, सबसे बड़ा प्रभाव रखना) over the Lingayat community and is crucial in electoral calculations (गणना, मूल्यांकन, निर्णय, पूर्वानुमान) in Karnataka has been brought back into the power structure, a year after he was asked to resign as Chief Minister. By inducting (प्रतिष्ठापित करना, स्वीकार करना, अनुमति देना) him into both bodies, the central leadership has conceded (स्वीकार करना, पहचानना) his indispensability (अपरिहार्यता, महत्वपूर्ण महत्व) . Also notable (important, significant, pronounced, marked, striking, glaring, obvious) is the BJP’s agility (sharpness, quickness, briskness (while thinking and understanding something)) to redeploy (पुनर्वितरित, पुनर्व्यवस्थित, फेरबदल) resources (staff, people) according to changing situations — Sarbananda Sonowal, a tribal face in Assam who was replaced as Chief Minister, is now in the Parliamentary Board. He is also a Union Minister.
BJP OBC Morcha head and Rajya Sabha MP K. Laxman from Telangana and former Lok Sabha MP Sudha Yadav from Haryana are expected to be the party’s links to relatively (to a certain degree, to a certain extent, partly, partially, in some measure, comparatively, moderately, a little, somewhat) new constituencies (a group/body of supporters). Iqbal Singh Lalpura has become the first Sikh to be inducted into the Parliamentary Board, while Shahnawaz Hussain has been dropped from the CEC. Mr. Modi is particular about staying in complete control, but he recruits and deploys (use, utilize, employ, make use of) a diverse legion (unit, section, group, division, squad) in his support. The BJP under him has achieved a balance between a disciplined (polite, respectful, obedient, obliging) central command and the autonomy (independence, freedom) of individual leaders who are in charge of particular tasks. While only a few of them have the capacity of Mr. Yediyurappa to bargain (negotiate, discuss terms, hold talks, deal) with the party, they do strengthen the relentless (sustained, continuous, constant, persistent) social engineering (the act of tricking someone into divulging (revealing sensitive (or) personal) information or taking action usually through technology. It is to take advantage of a potential victim’s natural tendencies and emotional reactions) pursuits (quest, aspiration, activity) of the BJP. The party has the capacity to be flexible and can even reverse its decisions to manage its electoral prospects (chances, possibilities, expectations, outlook, future), as Mr. Yediyurappa’s rehabilitation (restoration, bringing back, reinduction; reinstitution, reinstallation, re-establishment, revival) shows. The dislodging (remove, oust, topple, eliminate) of Mr. Gadkari, who has maintained an image of relative autonomy as Minister and a party leader, on the other hand (as an alternative, or, as another option, as a substitute, as a replacement), can be interpreted (understand, construe, take to mean, take, read, see, regard) as a stern (strict, severe, stringent, rigorous, inflexible) demand for absolute (complete, total, utter, out-and-out, outright) loyalty (allegiance, faithfulness, obedience, adherence). That too is a sign of the changing relationship between Mr. Modi and the RSS, the mother ship (base, source, origin, place of origin) of the Sangh Parivar that includes the BJP. Mr. Gadkari is said to be a favourite of the RSS, which no longer holds the same sway over the BJP as it used to. Mr. Gadkari’s exclusion also coincides with the inclusion of another Brahmin from Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, in the CEC. The reconstituted (reformed, reorganized, rearranged) Parliamentary Board and CEC of the BJP signal (indicate, point to, denote, show, communicate) dynamism (strength, potency, efficacy, powerfulness, vigour, spirit) and tight control at the same time.
