The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced several important changes for the CUET 2025 exam, which will affect both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar revealed that the exam will return to the computer-based test (CBT) format, replacing the hybrid model used in 2023.
In 2023, the UGC decided to use OMR sheets for subjects with higher registration numbers. However, the hybrid format will not continue in 2025. Instead, the exam will be fully computer-based to simplify the process and cut down on the number of exam days. Additionally, the number of subjects will be reduced from 63 to 37. Admissions for the dropped subjects will be based on General Aptitude Test (GAT) scores.
Another major change is the introduction of more subject flexibility. Candidates will now be allowed to choose subjects in CUET UG that they haven’t studied in Class 12. This change helps students explore new fields of study and move beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries in higher education.
The scheduling of the CUET UG exam is also being revised. In 2024, the exam was conducted in three shifts per day. For 2025, UGC plans to standardize the exam duration to 60 minutes for all subjects. Previously, the exam durations varied between 45 and 60 minutes. Another significant change is that all questions will be compulsory—there will be no optional questions.
Candidates will also be allowed to appear for a maximum of five subjects instead of six, as was the case previously. However, the new guidelines give students more flexibility in choosing subjects, including those they haven’t studied in Class 12.
To ensure continuous improvement, the UGC Chairperson held a feedback session with students who passed CUET UG 2024. The aim is to make the exam process smoother and more efficient. An expert committee has also been formed to review the conduct of CUET UG and PG exams for 2025.
CUET, which replaced the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET), is organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam was first conducted in 2022 and faced some technical glitches. In response, CUET UG 2024 brought several changes, including returning to CBT and adjusting the exam format and subjects.
With these revised guidelines, CUET 2025 aims to provide a fairer and more efficient exam process, ensuring smoother admissions for students across India.
