Dodging bullets: On an assassination bid and U.S. politics
Joe Biden and Donald Trump should not worsen the polarisation (ध्रुवीकरण) after the assassination (हत्या) attempt
Former United States President Donald Trump has narrowly (only just, barely) survived an assassination attempt by a gunman who fired at him during a political rally (meeting, gathering, assembly) in Butler, Pennsylvania, hitting his ear before the 78-year-old was rushed off the podium by Secret Service agents. The shooter, identified as Thomas Crooks, a registered Republican ((in the US) a member or supporter of the Republican Party (also referred to as the GOP); conservative, right winger. Grand Old Party (GOP) refers to the Republican Party) who also made a small donation to a pro-Democratic group, died when law enforcement officers at the scene returned fire. The dramatic events have unfolded (develop, evolve, happen, occur, transpire, emerge) at a fraught (worried, troubled, stressful, overwrought, distressed, agitated, distracted, frantic, desperate, distraught (and with many problems)) time in American politics — not only is the 2024 presidential election a little over three months away, but, ironically (विडम्बना से) , the attack comes after months of Mr. Trump and his supporters periodically (समय-समय पर) indulging in rhetoric (bombast, loftiness, hyperbole/extravagant language) that condoned (approve, sanction, justify, vindicate, endorse (something bad as acceptable)) or sympathised (सहानुभूति प्रकट करना) with violence or violent intentions in the political sphere (क्षेत्र). The most notable (उल्लेखनीय) among these instances was when he said that he believed that the mob (भीड़) that breached (उल्लंघन करना) the gates of Capitol (In the United States, the Capitol is a building in Washington in which the US Congress meets) Hill on January 6, 2021, was comprised of “unbelievable patriots (देशभक्त)”. To a certain extent (कुछ हद तक), the seriousness of the latest incident, rare but not unprecedented (अभूतपूर्व) in U.S. political history, engendered (उत्पन्न करना) sympathy bridging the partisan (पक्षपातपूर्ण) divide (विभाजित करना). President Joe Biden unequivocally (absolutely, directly, clearly, unambiguously, conclusively, unconditionally, categorically, unqualifiedly, explicitly, outright) and immediately condemned the attack on Mr. Trump, saying that there was no place in America for this. “We must unite as one nation to condemn (denounce, criticize, censure, castigate, hit out at, discredit, find fault with, slam) it. It’s sick (disappointed, low-spirited, miserable, disgusted, annoyed).” Similar sentiments (feeling, emotion; thought, opinion) were expressed by other political figures (a distinctive person or an important person).
So far as the impact on the election is concerned, Mr. Trump was already projected (predict, expect) to be leading Mr. Biden narrowly in swing States (it refers to any (U.S) state that could reasonably be won by either the Democratic or Republican presidential candidate by a swing in votes. “Red state” refers to states of the United States whose voters predominantly choose Republican Party (red) presidential candidates where as “blue state” refers to states of the United States whose voters predominantly select Democratic Party (blue) presidential candidates) — critical (important, key, essential, vital, crucial) to the election result — in a range of polls. Now, that lead may widen, although whether it will be unassailable (indisputable, undeniable, unquestionable; beyond question/doubt, conclusive) by election day remains to be seen. The ratings of former President Ronald Reagan jumped (increase, rise suddenly; soar) dramatically after he was shot by a man on March 30, 1981, 69 days after assuming (accept, undertake, take on, take up, begin to have (power or responsibility)) office, yet that boost disappeared within several weeks. The more complex and troubling question is the extent to which the Trump campaign (canvassing, electioneering, an act of soliciting (asking for/requesting) votes; an organized effort that seeks to influence the decision-making progress within a specific group), in its bid to capitalise on (take advantage of, use, make use of, benefit from) the near martyrdom (death/suffering of a martyr) of its candidate, will adopt (choose or select to use; approve, agree, support, take on) the language (way of talking, mode of expression) of hate politics, building on vicious (serious, dangerous, dreadful, bitter, nasty, hostile, hate-filled, acrimonious, poisonous, spiteful) comments that have already been circulating on social media since the attack, many of them blaming Democrats ((in the US) a member or supporter of the Democratic Party; liberal) for the violence and deliberately (intentionally, purposely, purposefully, knowingly) conflating (combine, abridge/summarize (too many information into one); shrink, shorten, reduce) political opposition with personal animus (hostility, conflict, feud). If the two presidential candidates, their campaign teams, and their party leaders abandon common civility (politeness, good manners, consideration, respect) in what should ideally be a structured (organized, systematic, methodical, well ordered, planned) partisan contest and allow baser populist (relating to the politicians who claim that they are representing the common/ordinary people) instincts (natural tendency/feeling, inclination, urge, compulsion) to dominate their speeches in the months ahead, it will inevitably (necessarily, unavoidably, definitely, certainly, surely) exacerbate (increase, escalate, add to, intensify, heighten, aggravate, make worse) the already bitter (acrimonious, spiteful, vicious, vindictive, hostile, hate-filled, venomous, angry) state of polarisation in the public discourse (discussion, conversation, communication, expression). Whoever wins on November 5 would then stand on the brink (edge/verge/end (of something)) of a deeply (extremely, intensely, severely, awfully) troubled polity (a politically organized society), hardly (slightly, rarely, scarcely, barely, only just) the ideal scenario (situation, background, context) to build bipartisan (involving cooperation between two (opposite & big) political parties) bridges, so essential to ensure that the U.S. can tackle the many challenges it faces, foreign and domestic.
