Explosive affair: On the Coimbatore car blast

The Coimbatore blast calls for constant (लगातार, निरंतर) vigil (निगरानी, जलूस, सतर्कता) on the law and order (कानून एवं व्यवस्था) and political fronts

With investigators finding tell-tale signs of a terror plot (भूखंड, योजनाएं, रणनीति) having gone awry, post Sunday’s predawn car blast near a temple in communally-fragile Coimbatore, the incident, unless tackled professionally with sensitivity (संवेदनशीलता, जवाबदेही, विचार), holds the potential (संभावना, क्षमता) of escalating (increase, intensify, heighten, amplify) existing tensions on the law and order and political fronts. Information that the car’s driver (urge, move, press, prompt, impel) and suspected (संदिग्ध, संदेहास्पद) mastermind, who was charred, Jameesha Mubin, was briefly under the National Investigation Agency (NIA) (राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी) radar, would certainly call into question the capabilities of the intelligence (जानकारी, तथ्य, विवरण) apparatus (उपकरण, व्यवस्था, तंत्र) in sensing (recognize, realize, discover, discern) and forestalling a terror plot. It is sheer (complete, absolute, total, thorough, consummate) providence that an LPG cylinder in the car exploded (फटना, विस्फोट), as preliminary investigation suggests, before Mubin could strike (hit, attack) terror. What cannot be overlooked (neglect, ignore, disregard, turn a blind eye) is that the incident came against the backdrop (पृष्ठभूमि, स्थिति) of serial Molotov cocktail (petrol bomb, bottle bomb) attacks last month, targeting properties of right-wing (rightist, conservative, reactionary, traditionalist) outfits (party, organization, group) and their office-bearers in the wake of (as a result of some event, especially an unpleasant one; in the aftermath of, as a consequence of, on account of, because of, owing to) the nationwide ban on the Popular Front of India (The Popular Front of India is an extremist Islamic organisation in India. The Popular Front of India (PFI) was launched in Kerala in 2006 after merging three Muslim organizations- the National Development Front of Kerala, Karnataka Forum for Dignity and Manitha Neethi Pasari of Tamil Nadu). To the credit of the police force (an organized body of police), the larger design (target, intention, aim, purpose, objective) was unravelled (सुलझाना, खोलना) and the suspected plotters (साज़िश करनेवाला, षडयंत्र करने वाला) unmasked (detect, discover, unearth) in less than 24 hours. That half a dozen suspects (accused, suspected person) have been arrested bears testimony to (bear witness to, be evidence of, be proof of, prove, demonstrate, connfirm, substantiate, vouch for) their investigation skills. Despite the police’s commendable (admirable, praiseworthy, laudable) post-blast action, realising the gravity (importance, top priority, necessity, exigency, seriousness) and political ramifications (result, outcome, effect, repercussion, consequence) of the issue at hand, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin did the right thing in recommending that the NIA take over (take control of, take charge of, assume responsibility for) the probe. Governor R.N. Ravi, a former IPS officer, has questioned the four-day delay in calling the NIA. However, that is a matter of perspective (outlook, viewpoint, approach) and individual assessment (evaluation, analysis, appraisal) of the ground situation (a situation/place where things are happening really/practically).

Politically, this has thrown up (produce; create and bring it to notice) some challenges for Mr. Stalin. He has to delicately (tactfully) balance (level, poise, stabilize, steady, remain/get in position) the duty of taking along the minorities and the administrative (governmental, regulatory, organizational) need (necessity, requirement, obligation, demand) to uncompromisingly deal with fundamentalists (extremist, fanatic, radical), who propagate (spread, disseminate, communicate, publicize, preach) violence as an answer to political problems. In this he would require the support of constituent (relating to a element/part of something) parties of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (an alliance of Indian political parties formed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)), which should acknowledge (accept, recognize, realize) the need for such balance (stability, equilibrium, poise, composure, a calm state of mind). The DMK, as such, faces criticism of being soft on terror, due to the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts, though Tamil Nadu has seen the fangs (a large & sharp tooth) of terror during the AIADMK regime (government; system) too (1993 RSS office blast). He also has to combat attempts trying to stoke (incite, add fuel to, intensify, amplify) communal passions (interest, obsession, craze, rage) and driving religious polarisation (separation of two contrasting groups (based on different opinions/beliefs)) using this incident as a springboard (something which provides support or motivation to do a particular course of action). The BJP has seized upon (to take an opportunity/chance decisively) the issue with a section of its leaders calling for a Coimbatore bandh on October 31 to put the heat on (to try to force someone to do something; to put pressure on someone to do something) the government and consolidate (strengthen, reinforce, fortify) itself politically. What is needed, though, is for the NIA and the government to deal with the plotters firmly while not providing scope for communalising (make communal) and politicising (to make something into a political issue) terrorism.
