Indians abroad: On the 18th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

Absence of opportunities remains the main driver of migration (प्रवास, पलायन)

At the inauguration (उद्घाटन, आरंभ) of the 18th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) (प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस) last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Indian diaspora (प्रवासी समुदाय) as India’s “ambassadors (राजदूत, प्रतिनिधि) to the world”, having “seamlessly (सहजता से) assimilated (आत्मसात करना, समाहित करना)” into the local society, served the community, and contributed to India’s growth and prosperity (समृद्धि, उन्नति). The strength of the India-origin community worldwide of over 35 million — about 15.85 million NRIs and 19.57 million PIOs, who are foreign nationals — is their ability to adapt and thrive (प्रगति करना, फलना-फूलना) in different fields, including in politics, where Indian-origin people have become leaders of more than 30 other countries. Where they retain their Indian passports, the diaspora is known for its distinguished (प्रतिष्ठित, विशिष्ट) services in many professional spheres (क्षेत्र, दायरा). The PBD’s purpose is to celebrate this success and discuss issues of importance; President Droupadi Murmu handed out (give out, distribute, provide, dispense) about 27 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards (प्रवासी भारतीय सम्मान पुरस्कार). The event, which was first held in 2003, is organised around January 9, when Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915. The latest event, held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, brought more than 3,000 delegates (प्रतिनिधि) from across 70 countries, with much of the focus on how the diaspora can help in developing India (Viksit Bharat programme).

The achievements of the Indian diaspora are, no doubt, a matter of pride for all Indians, but it is important that the event is not limited to a simple self-congratulatory (self-satisfied, self-admired, self–glorifying, self-promoting, overly complacent, boastful, bombastic) or laudatory (प्रशंसात्मक) exercise. The issues for the diaspora, particularly for those who are still Indian nationals, are more acute (गंभीर, तीव्र) now. The increase in far-right (relating to the extreme right-wing of a political party or group; extremely conservative, rightist) populist (relating to the politicians who claim that they are representing the common/ordinary people) governments, particularly in the West (The Western world/civilization consisting of the majority of Europe & the North America), is making visa and entry conditions for Indians more difficult, and it is important for the government to address (tackle, deal with, attend to, try to sort out) such issues. Intractable (unmanageable, uncontrollable, ungovernable) global conflicts (war, warfare, armed conflict, military action, armed clash), especially in West Asia where more than nine million Indians live and work, are also putting lakhs of Indians in peril (danger, jeopardy, risk, difficulty), and the PBD engagement (participation, involvement, taking part, association) would benefit from discussions between the community on how best to increase awareness and enhance safeguards for them. Given (considering, taking into account, bearing in mind) the broad (comprehensive, extensive, wide, wide-ranging, broad-ranging) spread of the diaspora, it is necessary to ensure that India’s ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) with its diaspora be inclusive (comprehensive, extensive, all-inclusive, all-encompassing, all-embracing, thorough, sweeping, far-reaching, widespread, broad-based), and non-partisan (impartial, equitable, unbiased, unprejudiced, disinterested, dispassionate) on political issues. Recent actions by the government to deny or revoke (abolish, discard, remove, eliminate, discontinue, cancel; overrule, reverse, overrule, rule against, cancel, quash, reject, dismiss) OCI cards for those perceived (discern, recognize, distinguish, comprehend, understand) to be critical of (reproving, disapproving, condemning, criticizing) the government bely this necessity (essential requirement, prerequisite, necessary, indispensability). Above all (most importantly, in essence, primarily, mainly), it is important to acknowledge (accept, recognize, realize) that one of the biggest drivers (a factor that causes a specific thing to happen) of Indians migrating is the lack (absence, unavailability, non-existence) of economic opportunities within India. While there are no easy fixes (solution, way out, panacea, remedy, antidote, magic bullet) for this, the loss to India of some of its most talented people must be counted, even as the country celebrates their incredible success and impact on the global stage.
