Message from voters: On Odisha, Uttarakhand bypoll results
Chief Ministers of Odisha and Uttarakhand have been strengthened by the bypoll results
It is not often that by-elections are of any significant consequence (परिणाम, महत्व, प्रासंगिकता). But Uttarakhand, where the Chief Minister was in a do-or-die (करो या मरो, अंतिम-मौका) battle; Kerala, where the main Opposition, the Congress, was fighting for survival; and Odisha, where the ruling party was seeking (मांगना, प्रयास, लक्ष्य) another vote of confidence (विश्वास मत); all saw high-stakes (उच्च दांव, खतरनाक) contests. An impressive victory in the Thrikkakara Assembly by-election has revived (पुनरुज्जीवित होना, वापस लाना, ऊर्जा देना) the Congress in Kerala from the slumber (नींद, सोना) and the chaos (अव्यवस्था, अस्तव्यस्तता, विघ्न) that had gripped (पकड़, पीड़ित करना, प्रभावित करना) the party following two consecutive (लगातार, क्रमिक) Assembly election defeats, in 2016 and 2021. The seat is a Congress stronghold (गढ़, किला) that stayed with the party even in 2021, when the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) won 99 of the 140 seats. The seat had fallen vacant following the demise (death, dying, passing away) of P.T. Thomas, who had shown great courage to stand up to (मुक़ाबला करना, विरोध करना, चुनौती देना) the Catholic Church on issues of public policy (सार्वजनिक नीति). His wife Uma Thomas was the Congress candidate. The LDF was criticised on grounds (reason, cause, basis, base, rationale, premise, factor, pretext, motive) that it sought to align its selection of candidate and campaign (अभियान, प्रचार) with the wishes of the Church. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) also turned the election into a referendum (public vote; a direct vote in which people cast ballots to decide on a specific issue or policy) on the Silver Line semi-high speed railway project that the Pinarayi Vijayan government was championing (support, back, urge, promote, advocate, endorse, recommend, espouse). The victory, by an increased margin in comparison with 2021, reinforces (support, uphold, bolster, underpin, undergird, strengthen) the leadership of V.D. Satheesan, the leader of Opposition, and K. Sudhakaran, the President of the Congress State unit. The CPI(M) and the LDF must take the lessons from the results with humility (modesty, humbleness, lack of pride, unassertiveness) and appropriately recalibrate (reevaluate, reassess, revamp) their positions.
In Odisha’s Brajarajnagar Assembly constituency, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate, Alaka Mohanty, won by a margin of 66,122 votes, defeating the Congress that pushed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the third position. The bypoll was necessitated (require, demand, call for, be grounds for, warrant, entail, involve) by the death of the winner’s husband Kishore Mohanty. The result has further strengthened the hands (control, power, authority) of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who revamped (reorganize, restructure, rearrange, rebuild, improve) his Council of Ministers immediately after the victory. The BJP that has been nurturing (encourage, promote, stimulate, foster, further, advance, boost, strengthen) ambitions to replace the BJD in the State had to eat humble pie (to admit your fault in a humiliating way and/or make a humble apology; back down, admit defeat, surrender, capitulate, yield, give in, cave in, submit) in the seat, though it is part of the Bargarh Parliamentary Constituency which it had won in 2019. In 2024, Mr. Patnaik will be on his way to becoming one of the longest serving Chief Ministers. In Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami won the Champawat Assembly seat as expected, tightening (make stricter, make more rigorous, make more stringent, stiffen, toughen) his grip (control, stranglehold, domination (over something)) over the party. The BJP has been going through (undergo, experience, face, suffer, be subjected to, put p with) a churn (disorder/disorganization, confusion, disruption/chaos) in the State, leading to (result in, cause, bring on, bring about, call forth, give rise to) the elevation (promotion, rise) of Mr. Dhami who was not an MLA, after the Assembly elections in February-March. But the path ahead will depend on how smartly Mr. Dhami navigates (handle, manage) the dangerous roads in the hill State’s politics.
