Every year, the Ministry of Education in India ranks colleges and universities. This year will be the ninth time they do this ranking, and it's called NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework). This article explains what NIRF is and how they decide which schools are the best.
The NIRF ranking methodology is formulated from the overall recommendations made by a core committee constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) with the objective of identifying broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. There are a total of five parameters, each of which has its own sub-headings.

Ranking Methodology as per NIRF:
- They set up criteria to evaluate universities and institutions, which are agreed upon by the committee.
- Each area and its sections are given specific importance.
- When they do the rankings, they collect data to measure how well each area performs. They only use data that's easy to get and can be checked, to keep the process clear.
- They use measures to figure out how well each section performs.
- They add up the scores from each section to get the total score for each area. Then, they calculate an overall score based on the importance of each area. The highest score possible is 100.
- Finally, they rank the institutions based on their scores.
