Power to the people: On Telangana as a potentially rewarding challenge for the Congress

The Congress has an opportunity to demonstrate its governance model in Telangana

Anumula Revanth Reddy has traversed (तय करना, पार जाना) a long political distance to emerge as the Congress Chief Minister of India’s youngest State, Telangana. Not restrained (नियंत्रित करना) by ideological (विचारधारा) harnesses, fired up by burning ambition, and endowed with the capacity to work hard, Mr. Reddy and the Congress turned out to be a perfect fit for each other. Leaving behind (forget, shed, get away from, forsake, disown, give up, quit, renounce) his many past lives, including in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated (संबद्ध) Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Telugu Desam Party, he arrived in the Congress, in 2017. His rise (growth, advance, advancement, elevation) within the party has been as impressive as the rise of the Congress itself, and perhaps (शायद, संभवतः) both are linked. The threat (धमकी, खतरा) that Mr. Reddy posed (cause (a trouble, problem or danger); constitute, present, produce, create) to his chair (a symbolic representation of the post of a chief minister (the elected head of government of a state)) was sensed (realize, recognize, observe, discern, come to know, become aware of) early on (at or during an early point/stage) by the outgoing (departing, retiring, leaving) Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), which partly explains how he landed up (reach a place/situation) on the wrong side of the law in a sensational (सनसनीखेज़) bribe for vote case. But nothing would break (interrupt, disturb, obstruct, interfere with) the momentum (the increase in the rate of growth of something; strength, impetus) of Mr. Reddy. His relentless (continuous, constant, steady, non-stop, lasting, unflagging, persistent) campaign (अभियान) against KCR endeared (inspire, attract, cherish, charm) him to an expanding (विस्तार) segment (खंड, हिस्सा) of voters who thought many in the Opposition camp were not being true to their roles. Mr. Reddy developed a good rapport (तालमेल) with the central leadership of the Congress, and galvanised (to cause someone to take action by exciting or shocking them; stimulate, encourage, inspire, stir, arouse, prompt, shock/stun) enough momentum for the party that other leaders had no option but to fall in line (obey, follow, adhere to, abide by, conform to/with, agree on) with him.

Having climbed the peak, fresh challenges begin for Mr. Reddy and the Congress. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has placed caste justice as a motif (theme, concept, idea, motive, topic/subject) of his politics, and the party victory in Telangana is indeed (वास्तव में) built on a multi-caste, multi-religious social coalition (गठबंधन, साझेदारी). Congress leaders who have stayed with the party through bad times could justifiably (agreeably, fairly, honestly, logically, understandably, reasonably, obviously, comprehensibly) feel aggrieved (disgruntle, dissatisfy, be unhappy, be upset, be annoyed, disappoint) that a later entrant (शामिल होनेवाला) has come on top (If a person comes out on top, he/she is more successful than the others that he/she has been competing with) when the party won power. Of particular note is Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who was Congress Legislature (law-making body or governing body; parliament, congress, council, assembly) Party leader in the outgoing Assembly. A Dalit, who walked across the State in a successful mobilisation (the act of bringing forces/people/resources together for a particular cause) for the party, he has to be accommodated (oblige, do someone a favour/service, do someone a good turn, lend a hand to, meet the needs/wants of; satisfy, gratify) respectfully if the Congress wants to make its social justice (the equal access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society) plank (a fundamental point) meaningful and trusted by the masses. The party has 64 MLAs but only 17 can become Ministers besides (apart from, other than, barring, excluding) the Chief Minister. The new government has to keep itself stable with the slim (slight, small, marginal, negligible, minimal) majority it has in the 119 strong Assembly. Considering all these factors, the Congress has made it clear that its Telangana government would not be a ‘one man show’. The Congress has also promised to further embellish (elaborate, enhance, expand on, enrich, brighten up) the array (collection, range, variety, mixture, raft, line-up) of welfare (a government program that provides (financial) assistance to individuals and families in need; social security, government/state benefit, public assistance) schemes in the State. The party’s governance (the act of governing something; administration) and political management in Telangana will also have a ripple effect in other States, particularly in Andhra Pradesh. Telangana presents a potentially rewarding challenge for Mr. Reddy and the Congress.
