Ties that bind: On India-Australia ties and the Modi visit

The Narendra Modi visit to Australia adds to the bipartisan (द्विदलीय) strength of growing bonds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to Australia this week coincided with a year since Labour Party leader Anthony Albanese was elected Prime Minister, and gave a fillip (प्रोत्साहन, बढ़ावा) to growing bipartisan ties (association, relationship, bond, connection). While his visit was originally planned for a multilateral (बहुपक्षीय) event, the meeting of the Quad, it transformed into a purely bilateral (द्विपक्षीय) visit after the U.S. President pulled out (leave, quit, give up, retreat, abandon) over domestic political constraints (बाध्यता, प्रतिबंध); Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida followed suit, and a shortened (abridged, abbreviated, reduced, truncated, compressed) Quad Summit (meeting, conference, conclav (of heads of state/government)) was held in Hiroshima. As a result, Mr. Modi’s Sydney sojourn (stay, visit; journey) was much more in the spotlight (लोकप्रियता), particularly his address (a formal speech, talk, discourse) to the Indian community which Mr. Albanese joined in, as well as the address to business groups. In what was their sixth such meeting in the past year, the announcements from the Modi-Albanese meet included opening an Australian consulate (a consulate is a smaller version of an embassy and is generally located in the larger tourist cities of a country, but not the capital. Consulates (and their chief diplomat, the consul) handle minor diplomatic issues such as issuing visas, aiding in trade relationships, and taking care of migrants, tourists, and expatriates) in Bengaluru and an Indian consulate in Brisbane, an agreement on Migration (प्रवास) and Mobility (गतिशीलता), and the finalisation of terms of reference (संदर्भ की शर्तें) for an India-Australia Green Hydrogen (it is hydrogen fuel that is created using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels) Task Force (a temporary organization/grouping created to solve a particular problem). Defence and security ties, cooperation on renewable energy (नवीकरणीय ऊर्जा), and critical minerals were also part of the substantive (important, significant, considerable) agenda, as was the need to sign a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (an agreement between two countires to strengthen bilateral trade. The aim of the agreement is to enhance economic and social benefits, improve living standards and ensure high and steady growth in real incomes in their respective territories by expansion of trade and investment flows, to promote economics development and to promote investment between them) by December. On international issues, despite their differing (भिन्न होना, अलग होना) stances on Russia’s invasion (आक्रमण, हमला) of Ukraine and western sanctions (प्रतिबंध), they found continuing and common cause on maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific, and dealing with an aggressive (आक्रामक) China.

However, it was the celebration as well as the concerns of the Indian-origin community that appeared to overshadow (exceed, surpass, overtake, eclipse, outshine; overpower) all else. While both leaders exulted (rejoice, be joyful, be happy, be pleased) in the mammoth crowd at Sydney’s SuperDome, Mr. Modi said that the “real reason, the real power” behind the bilateral relations came from people of Indian-origin in Australia. On the subsequent morning, activities of other groups and conflicts also tracing back to people of Indian origin were discussed as Mr. Modi repeated his concerns over vandalism (बर्बरता) and attacks defacing (vandalise, harm, injure) community centres and temples with pro-Khalistani (supporting Khalistan movement), anti-India and anti-Modi graffiti (pictures or words painted or drawn on a wall, building, etc). These had been raised during Mr. Albanese’s visit to India in March. While any attack on an Indian consulate is a valid bilateral concern, New Delhi must consider how much attention it wishes to pay to attacks by Australian citizens on Australian citizens and Australian property. While the growing incidents may be cause for worry (reason to worry), it is by no means (not at all, in no way, certainly not, absolutely not, definitely not) clear that giving them centre-stage (centre of attention, spotlight, public eye) during such visits is conducive to strengthening the common understanding between both countries, or in the best interests (common concerns (in politics/business)) of the “three D’s” Mr. Modi said bind the two countries today — Democracy, Diaspora (the people who spread/scatter from their own country to places across the world. Indian diaspora constitutes NRIs (Non-resident Indians) and PIOs (Persons of Indian origins)) and Dosti [Friendship].
