Triangular in Tripura: On the TIPRA Motha factor in the Assembly polls

The TIPRA Motha has added a new dimension (आयाम, पहलू, सुविधा) to the Assembly election

If it was the rapid rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that changed the political landscape (परिदृश्य) of Tripura in 2018, the buzz now, five years later, is around the Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) Motha, a regional party floated by former royalty Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, after leaving the Congress. As it happens (जैसा कि होता है), erstwhile (पूर्व, पुराना) arch rivals (कट्टर प्रतिद्वंद्वियों, विरोधी), the Left Front led by the CPI(M) and the Congress, are in an alliance (गठबंधन, समझौता) that they say is essential to counter (विरोध करना, सामना करना) the rising tide of saffron in the State, which goes to the polls on February 16. The BJP did not match the high expectations that accompanied (साथ देना) its swift (तेज, शीघ्र) rise in 2018, and, last year, replaced Biplab Kumar Deb with Manik Saha as Chief Minister to reanimate itself. In its 2018 win, the BJP had ended 25 years of Left Front rule by bagging 36 seats in the 60-member House. It is seeking (try to obtain, aim, attempt) re-election not so much based on its track record (history, background, (previous) performance, accomplishments, achievements) in the State, but by highlighting (प्रमुखता से दिखाना, रेखांकित करना) Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image (छवि, प्रतिष्ठा), central schemes, claims (दावा करना, माँग करना) about India’s handling (control, leadership, management, administration) of COVID-19, its global economic clout (influence, power, leverage, sway), its G-20 (The G20, formed in 1999, is a group of twenty of the world’s largest economies that meets regularly to coordinate global policy on trade, health, climate, and other issues. The G20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, EU, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, UK and USA. The G20 Countries together represent around 90% of global GDP, 80% of global trade, and two thirds of the world’s population) leadership, and the central Budget. The Left-Congress alliance and the Motha have been raising issues of corruption, misuse of government machinery (प्रणाली, संरचना), the reign (शासन) of fear, and unemployment to target the BJP. By warning people against parties trying to divide Tripura, and ignoring questions about its governance, the BJP is projecting (present in a particular way; put across) the Motha as its main rival (competitor, contestant, contender).

The Motha, which is contesting 42 seats, is expected to do well in the 20 tribal-dominated Assembly seats within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (an autonomous district council administering the Tipra-dominated areas of the state of Tripura, India. Its council and assembly are situated in Khumulwng, a town 26 km away from Agartala, the state capital) where it has been in power since 2021. The offer (proposal, approach, suggestion, overture) of a pre-poll alliance by both the BJP and the Left-Congress alliance shows that the Motha is a force to reckon with (a person/thing with strong abilities and strengths cannot be ignored/underrated). The Motha rejected the Left-Congress offer while negotiations (discussions, talks, deliberation) with the BJP fell through (fail, collapse, come to nothing) after it declined to give in writing that it would grant a Greater Tipraland (The Greater Tipraland includes the region under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous district Council (TTADC) and 36 villages out of it, within the Tripura State boundaries. There is a demand to carve out this area as a State or a Union Territory) within the constitutional framework (structure, system organization). The Left-Congress alliance supports the idea as long as (provided that) it does not affect the State’s territorial integrity (unity, unification, wholeness, coherence, cohesion, undividedness, togetherness, solidarity) but the BJP has rejected it, terming it divisive (alienating/isolating, disharmonious, discordant) and designed to make tribals (31.8% of the State’s 36.74 lakh population) and non-tribals drift apart (become less friendly). The Motha disagrees and points out (identify, mention, indicate, draw attention to) that unlike tribe-based parties of the past, including the BJP’s ally (partner, supporter, confederate), the Indigenous (native, original, aboriginal, ancient, primeval) People’s Front of Tripura, it is more inclusive (with everyone included, comprehensive, all-inclusive) than the BJP; it also accuses the national party of “dividing people on the basis of religion, food”. By fielding candidates in 22 non-tribal seats, the Motha has been trying to reiterate (repeat, say again, restate) that it stands for “Tripura for all”, stirring up the State’s politics.
