Hindi English Translation || Editorial || Wayward liberal: On Justin Trudeau

Wayward liberal: On Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau’s exit comes at the end of a period of misguided (गुमराह) politics

Justin Trudeau’s rise and fall as a global progressive (प्रगतिशील, सुधारवादी) icon (प्रतीक) is representative of the crisis of liberalism (उदारतावाद) in general. After being in power as Prime Minister of Canada for a nine-year tenure (कार्यकाल, अवधि) over three terms, Mr. Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6. He had risen as the central figure (शख्सियत, व्यक्ति) of Canadian politics in 2015, leading the Liberal (liberal) Party to an impressive victory in the federal (संघीय) election but that turned out to be the peak of his popularity. Born a child of privilege (विशेषाधिकार) and power — his father Pierre Elliott Trudeau was Prime Minister for 15 years — Mr. Trudeau had rhetoric (bombast, loftiness, hyperbole/extravagant language) that was music to the ears of the global liberal elite (अभिजात वर्ग, उच्च वर्ग), but his sense of the country’s public mood has been poor. As his unhinged (अस्थिर, असंतुलित) liberalism translated into (परिवर्तित होना) unchecked (अनियंत्रित, बेपरवाह) policies of the federal government, Canadians turned against him and the Liberal Party collapsed into a low point in its history, with its popularity now barely touching 15%. His fiscal policy riled (irritate, bother, annoy, vex, displease, anger, disgruntle, upset) conservatives (रूढ़िवादी, परंपरावादी) and moderates (उदारवादी), and the generous (liberal, high-minded, big-hearted, kind, compassionate, humane, generous, human-centered, socially concerned) immigration (the act of leaving one’s countries and moving to another country of which they are not natives, nor citizens, to settle or reside there, especially as permanent residents or naturalized citizens) policy that he approved created a spurt (sudden increase, rise, surge) in the population, straining (impair, damage; overburden, exhaust, drain) housing, health care, employment opportunities and wages. His cultural liberalism was far off (a very long distance from) the centre of Canadian politics. When signs of discontent (disappointment, dissatisfaction, disgruntlement, resentment, grievances, unhappiness, displeasure) began to manifest (show, present, express, reveal, indicate) as public protest and criticism, he resorted to (use, make use of, take advantage of, utilize, employ, avail, have recourse to) strong arm (aggressive, forceful, bullying, coercive, oppressive, threatening, intimidatory) state measures (action, step, course of action, procedure) and dismissed (disregard, put away, pay no heed to, reject, brush off) his critics (criticizer, censurer, castigator, attacker, fault-finder).

Mr. Trudeau said he hoped his exit would arrest (stop, halt, end, block, prevent) the decline of the Liberal Party but that sounds (appear, look, seem) overly (excessively, exceedingly) optimistic (reassuring, favourable, encouraging, promising, hopeful). But a post-Trudeau Canada may be able to mend (improve, strengthen, correct, set right, fix, patch up, renew, rebuild something (such as a relationship with someone after having a disagreement with him/her)) its ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) with key partners including the United States (government) and India. It might be months before the Liberal Party manages to install (swear in, induct, inaugurate, appoint, admit to office) his successor (next in line, inheritor, heir, replacement, incomer) or its minority government falls and a fresh election is held. The Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre is on an upswing (a sudden dramatic rise, increase; upsurge, upward trend, jump, escalation) and appears headed for a landslide (decisive (victory), runaway (victory), overwhelming majority) victory, whenever elections are held, unless there is yet another turnaround (an unexpected change) in public mood. Mr. Trudeau’s successor may help rescue (save (from danger or difficulty)) Canada-India ties. Mr. Trudeau’s compulsions (pressure, pressurization, intimidation, duress, constraint, obligation) to pander to (to do or say something to satisfy someone or someone’s (wrong) desire in order to get some advantage/benefit from it; satisfy, fulfil, indulge, gratify, soap) Sikh extremists (militant, radical, fanatic, hardliner, fundamentalist, sectarian, partisan) in Canada led to bizarre (strange, peculiar, curious, unconventional, unorthodox, abnormal) situations during his tenure. By escalating (increase/rise rapidly, heighten, intensify, accelerate) tensions (strained relations, strain, unease) with India on suspicion (misgiving, doubt/qualm, scepticism) of Indian agents being involved in the murder of a Khalistani (supporting Khalistan movement) activist (activist) in Canada, Mr. Trudeau showed poor statesmanship and diplomacy. In being publicly judgmental (critical, condemnatory, nitpicky, rejective, faultfinding) and dismissive (scornful, disdainful, disparaging, unenthusiastic; casual, indifferent, uninterested, unconcerned (about serious/important matter)) of Donald Trump in the run-up to (a period of time just before an important event) the elections in the United States, Mr. Trudeau acted unwisely (foolishly, pointlessly, senselessly, inaptly). He was ushered in (start, begin, initiate, commence, introduce, propose (something new)) with wide fanfare (publicity, media attention, sensationalism, splendour, display/show) in 2015, but nobody seems to cry over (grieve over, bemoan, moan over, weep over, bewail, lament, regret, rue, deplore) this exit.
